Rufus on Anderson: Release the Snark

Page Six today referenced a Spin interview with out musician Rufus Wainwright in which he apparently gets his snark on in reference to Anderson Cooper's athletic prowess. In a discussion about closeted celebs, Wainwright notes:

"If they stay in the closet, they're going to make a lot more money. I go to the same gym as Anderson Cooper. When I look at him lifting those 5-pound weights, it makes me think, 'He's just trying to live his life and be all that he can be.' But he still goes to the gayest gym in New York"

Goodness! Well, considering that Wainwright is crucified at the end of his (gorgeous) new video, it's not like we should be expecting subtlety. Page Six then weighs in with its own snark, first debating what "the gayest gym in New York" actually is (which is tantamount to arguing over "the gayest bathhouse in San Francisco", trust me) and insulting Rufus's body weight. Way to rise to the occasion, guys.

When I interviewed the outspoken singer/songwriter a few months back, he voiced his ambivalence about people who choose to say closeted for the sake of their careers, noting:

"I respect what other people want to do. And like I've said before, I feel that if I had been more mysterious about my own sexuality and played it a little more ambiguous, I probably would have sold more records and had more supporters, and sometimes I do bemoan the fact that I didn't go that route."

If you haven't read the full interview, please do -- and if you haven't heard Wainwright's new album Release the Stars yet, definitely check it out.
