Gay TV Recap: Sandler on Leno, Kathy gets dirty with "the gays"

As yesterday's Queerview noted, there was a slew of gay-themed TV on last night, and I caught a couple of the shows that didn't involve a bunch of idiots locked in a house together with no shirts.

Adam Sandler on Jay Leno
Sandler appeared to promote the fake-gay comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, and for the first time that I've seen actually talked about the gay stuff. In fact, he really, really went there with the gay stuff -- noting that he went out with a guy to prepare for the role and that he liked third base but not the home run. A groaner, but considering it followed a discussion of his after-drinking bowel movements, it certainly wasn't a low-point.

Sandler spoke about gay relationships and "gay lifestyle" (which is still a mystery to me) pretty comfortably, and interestingly most of the tasteless jokes involved straight co-star Kevin James's boobs. If the rest of the PR tour for the film is this uneventful, it'll be a big relief. And as GLAAD told us exclusively last week, the film itself is very gay-positive, so the big picture could actually be a good pop for visibility and understanding.

But on an unrelated note -- how appropriate was it that Leno used the word "queer" in an unrelated discussion about Sandler's family? Seriously, this guy is about as current as polio, and even less funny.

Kathy Griffin at the gay porn awards
Last night on D-List Kathy hosted a gay adult video award show in San Francisco, and it was pretty amazing what Bravo was willing to put on the air (dick jokes? really?). Like everything else in Kathy's life, the event was utterly bizarre and played for maximum freakshow effect (like her date with the poker player that preceded it), but it was still quite entertaining.

A commenter pointed this out a while back, though, and it has been bothering me: why has Kathy's friendship with "the gays" become Kathy's talking about her friendship with "the gays"? Where'd her gay friends go? Her gay fans obviously love her (as evidenced by her being mobbed on Castro Street), but it has been odd to see that there are apparently no gay men in her personal life, even though she talks about gays all the time.

And I'm sorry, but there's no way a gay man would let her go on-air with the hair she's been rocking lately. It's like a geodesic dome!

Next week Kathy goes to London and hangs out with Graham Norton. I smell BFF material.
