Saucy! British Heinz ad uses an unexpected gay kiss to sell mayonnaise
A new ad that began running on British television last night for Heinz mayo features a surprising man-on-man kiss. The new slogan for the deli mayo involves "adding a little New York City" to your sandwich, and the ad replaces a suburban mother with a gruff deli man who makes the kids' lunches and sends them off to school ... and then gets an affectionate smooch from the man of the house. I was expecting that the men were a gay couple with kids and was a bit thrown off when the kids referred to the sandwich-smith as "mum", but the joke is clear by the end. You can watch the full commercial over here. Kinda cute, eh? Submitted by on Tue, 2008-06-17 13:59. |

Perhaps a metaphor
I think the idea is that using the product brings a bit of the New York Deli experience into one's home, thus the deli guy is, in reality, a woman getting her family ready for the day. It used to be that scenes like that generally had a cut to the actual person the metaphor (in this case the deli guy) was standing in for.
Oh, definitely
I agree
I also think that it was great that they kept the guy in there all the way through the commercial. And I thought it was, all around, a really, really cute scene!
"I walk with dignity. I step with pride."

Very cute! I long for the day when we see commercials like this over here across the pond, without second thought or controversy.
As a side note, outside of the whole gay aspect of the commercial, one thing that struck me was the whole "New York" angle to a British commercial. Of course, it is an American company selling its product. But to see a New Yorker amidst a British family in this respect was rather refreshing, like we (America) might have some hope of repairing the damage the past 8 years has done to our international friends. (because anymore, I just think of the world as hating us...a generalization, but you know what I mean)
Oh my filthy mind!
Damn that liberal Kerry and his wife!!!
Is it just my perverted sense of humor, or is this particularly off-colour given that they're using gay symbolism to sell a viscous white liquid?
I join Psionycx in the filthy mind department!
I loved the kiss and it was great to see and all but the mere reference to the words "saucy" and "mayo" really has my mind working in overdrive!
How fitting is it that they chose a gay theme for a mayo commercial. ;)

Brit comercial
While you're suppose to see the Deli Dude as a real woman, a mom wearing a Mission Impossible mask, I had a different take.
I like to think of him as a he. A British businessman marries the love of his life, a man form the states who knows a thing about mayo and likes to do impersonations. So, when the deli dude takes off his mask, it's an American queen underneath. This is one of the few times he gets to see his kids, so he likes to make a play out of it, and because he's a drama queen, he likes to be called mum. So, in my mind that is the what the kid's 'mum' looks like.
Did anyone else notice
That "mum's" leg was lifted, during his kiss with "hubby"? I thought it was a cute little touch to the clip.

I was really surprised to
I was really surprised to see this on here!
I think it's an indication of how this really is no big deal in the UK anymore- seriously, most soaps and dramas have gay characters, so why not ads? Let's face it... British men are pretty camp anyhow, so why not play with it a little!!!
Absolutely hilarious
I take back my earlier comment...
Apparently the ad has been pulled here after 200 complaints over the weekend (according to gaysofdaytime)- I'm so ashamed of my country folk.
If anyone knows where to complain about that- please let me know!
