"Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane champions gay rights and "a good *ss f*ck" with Bill Maher

Say what you will about the way that The Family Guy and American Dad handle their gay humor, but creator Seth MacFarlane (who also happens to have the most lucrative TV contract in the HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE right now) has got our backs and is not afraid to say so.

This weekend the foul-mouthed funnyman appeared on Bill Maher's Real Time panel, and when Maher pointed out that MacFarlane is a "big champion of gay rights", MacFarlane immediately agreed, noting, "I like a good *ss f*ck as much as the next guy," flirted with another straight panelmember and then got to the real story:

That's an issue where ... it's okay for the people who have made that leap to kind of yank the rest of the nation forward. Because while you have people who are deliberating as they're watching Dr. Phil, and trying to figure out, "Gee, am I okay with this or not?" ... you've got couples who are just trying to get on with their f*cking lives, and why is it they have to wait for these people?

Amen, brother. GoodAsYou has the full, profanity-enhanced clip.

Seth's heart is in the right place

Seth's always been and ally, even if sometimes his comedy misses the mark.  He's definitely left me cold with some of his gay humor, but as I've been watching some Family Guy reruns, I've come to accept that he misses the mark with some of the other groups he jokes with.  Mort and the Jewish humor come to mind - sometimes it works, sometimes, it just misses and offends (and I'm not Jewish).  But a lot of the great comics that end up viewed as great social commentators by history do the same thing "in the moment."

There's always the possibility tha when I think he misses, maybe my sense of humor was just in the shop that day.

As for Seth, he's a funny guy, he's on our side, and as Brian mentions, with his current deal, he's currently one of the most powerful people in Hollywood.  I'm glad he's with us, instead of against us.

Seth

Damn I forgot him when voting for the Top 100!. He would have made my top 10 list for sure.

Handsome, rich, intelligent, witty, likes a good .....

I'm really surprised

I'm really surprised considering how terrible the recent "gay" episode of Family Guy was. Does he not know any real gay people? His stereotypes were outdated and embarassing. I'm glad he is a supporter, but he could really use a gay best friend to show him another side to our culture.

I agree...

Had the 'Family Gay' episode spent 30 minutes spewing outdated hispanic stereotypes (or asian, jewish, etc.) there would have been a public outcry. I know Seth is a champion for gay rights. I appreciate that. But, like Jay said, he definitely needs a gay friend to set him straight (so to speak).

He has 2 gay friends, well, acquaintances...

The 2 gay writers he worked with at one point seem to have informed his views of what it's like to be gay.

Family Guy... I've never

Family Guy... I've never been a big fan of that show, but I am sort of a fan of Seth MacFarlane. He's very articulate, passionate, and well, not hard on the eyes. I just wish he would make a show that's as funny and smart as he is.

Big Fan Here

I started watching the show a couple of years ago when they did the "Star Wars" episode, which I thought was great.  Then I found out that it was in syndication and have been catching up on what I missed.

I'm not easily offended and there are times it makes me cringe. But more times than not, it makes me laugh a lot.  Then there are time when it's absolutely charming. One episode has Stewie and Brian trying to rent a plane "for a song", which leads into the entire musical number from "Anchors Away" that Gene Kelly does with Stewie in place of Jerry (Tom and Jerry). (For you younger guys, this was a movie made in the late forties with Frank Sinatra.) There are little gems like this running through many of the episodes.  You just have get past the cringe factor.

(Oh... and Stewie should have made your list of Cartoon Charcters That Totally Ping the Gaydar."   Even tho' he's had his heart broken by a girl, there are a lot of references to hot looking guys; not to mention his penchent for crossdressing.)
