News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Sir Ian talks the closet, gets hit on at recent Q&A

As you may have read in our recent review, Sir Ian McKellen is currently in NYC with the Royal Shakespeare Company knocking audiences flat as King Lear.

But the NY Daily News reports that a recent Q&A with the actor was decidedly personal, noting:

"All anyone wanted to ask him about was playing Gandalf [in The Lord of the Rings trilogy] and Magneto [in The X-Men trilogy]," laughs a spy. "And one guy asked him out."

McKellen said from the stage that he had encouraged fellow acting greats Alec Guinness and John Gielgud to come out as gay during their lifetimes, but they had declined.

One thing is increasingly certain nowadays: if you're a gay or bisexual actor or celebrity, you're going to be outed once you're dead anyway (sometimes before you're even in the ground). So more than ever, it's narrowed to a question purely of managing a career versus living an authentic, open life. One can only wonder if these great actors would have had a fuller experience as out gay men (as Sir Ian certainly seems to, propositions from the audience or no).

Ian

He was great as Gandalf.  Personally my favorite performance of Ian's is from Gods and Monsters.  Everyone should see that movie.  Ian was on The Charlie Rose Show on Monday discussing King Lear among other things.  I missed it unfortunately.  He is one of my favorite celebrities.

A Fundamental Shift

has occurred in the past 20 years or so in Western society on people's attitudes towards GLBT in the entertainment industry.  I personally feel that most actors exaggerate the negative impact that coming out will have on their careers.  The majority of people do not care what their favourite star does in their personal life!  Ian McKellan is a good example of a talented actor who has actually done better in his career since he came out.  Ellen DeGeneres is another example of someone who has excelled.  Over the next 20 years, in Western societies at least, I predict that the majority of actors/actresses that are GLBT will be out.

Cheers

Nerve to come out

If Sir Ian (oh yes, I call him "Sir") could come out, what, 20 years ago? Then the excuses actors and actresses use nowadays sound even more hollow.
The man deserves a statue!
