Soulfource founder Rev. Dr. Mel White and son Mike White compete in "The Amazing Race" 14

Mel and Mike White

This really IS amazing: gay writer and activist Rev. Dr. Mel White and his son, screenwriter/actor/producer Mike White (who is himself bisexual), are competing together on the next season of The Amazing Race, set to premiere in a few weeks.

Rev. Dr. White was once a ghostwriter for Jerry Falwell before coming out as gay and parting ways with the homophobic evangelical church. (His story is told in the documentary Friends of God and in his book Stranger at the Gate.) He is currently married to his husband, Soulforce co-head Gary Nixon.

White's son, Mike, is known for appearing in movies like the brilliantly unsettling Chuck & Buck (which he also wrote), School of Rock (which he also wrote), and The Good Girl (which he wrote). He also wrote and directed Year of the Dog (starring Molly Shannon) and was one of the forces behind the shortly-lived fan fave series Freaks & Geeks (in which he also briefly appeared).

To have two gay men who are also relatives and who actively work to promote visibility and understanding on the show is really awesome. Let's hope they last!

About teams bickering, ""Compared to some of the other teams, I think we got along like a Hallmark card."

Love AR!

Amazing Race is amazing! I love the show and will definitely watch the new season. Seems interesting with a gay activist and his bi son, I hope they go far! I will be rooting for them.

Oh, squee

I gave up on TAR a while ago. The Charla season was too heavy on the drama for me. But I'll give anything with Mike White a chance.

Now when is that Pasadena DVD coming?

Actually Charla wasn't so

Actually Charla wasn't so bad.  It was her bitch cousin Mirna who made me ashamed she was representing Americans abroad.  Yelling loudly and slowly in some odd Spanish-sounding accent in remote parts of the world thinking they would understand her better.  Yikes!  Charla was a remarkably wily competitor.

I liked Charla

I actually liked Charla, but she was the only person whose name I still remember... Mirna was a nightmare who did her best to undo any goodwill Charla earned (though it was cute when she asked to play a couple rounds of blackjack when they ran through a casino) but it was the other guy that killed the show for me -- you know, the guy who almost got arrested for trying to stiff the taxi driver in a foreign country. Charla's been the only competitor whose name I've bothered to remember. No, wait, that was the season Chip & Kim won, wasn't it? Okay, it''s worth remembering their names. Still, that season was way too much drama, not enough game for me.

Is it a celebrity edition?

I don't understand how Mike White is eligible to compete for a show that offers a cash prize since he's a popular writer of several movies. Does anyone know how this happened?
Zam's picture

No, it's not a celeb edition

The gay parent/gay child dynamic has not yet been used as a casting "type" for the show, and could well provide cynical audiences with a greater understanding of the different people and types who make up the gay community.  It's obvious that at the end of the day, they were cast because they could compete, and they could entertain, and they had an interesting "story".

Whether they applied or were invited to do the show is unknown.  (It happens)

The Amazing Race

I'm so excited about this!  I'll be watching every week as long as the Whites are still there.  I like the concept of the show a lot, but only watch it when there are gay people on it.  Too many of the other contestants turn out to be obnoxious and make it unpleasant to watch.  Here's hoping Mel and Mike last far into the competition.

I'm also a fan of the show -

the only seasons I haven't watched were the ones with Boston Rob and Amber (UGH!). I'd love to see Mel and Mike do at least as well as the mother/son duo of Toni and Dallas (yum!) from last season. Mel and Mike seem to have that same sort of comfortable, supportive parent/child bond. Toni and Dallas came in fourth, and actually had a decent shot at first or second until Dallas accidentally left their money and passports in a cab. Up to that point they were generally focused and level-headed. Killer fatigue can cost you everything on The Amazing Race.
