A straight actor's gay education: Scott Bailey on his "Prayers for Bobby" experience

Scott Bailey

Being as how our hearts are about as soft as cashew brittle, it's not often that something comes along that warms us up enough to tease a gentle "Awwww..." from our lips.

But when actor Scott Bailey's publicist sent us an essay that he'd written about his experience playing the boyfriend of Bobby Griffith in the true-life tearjerker Prayers for Bobby, that's pretty much what happened.

I was originally going to excerpt the essay here for you to read, but I'm actually posting it in its entirety below, because it's kinda too precious for words.

PRAYERS FOR BOBBY: A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE.

Yes, Prayers for Bobby will air on LIFETIME starting Jan 24th but the title is more than just clever wordplay: it is my heartfelt truth!   It feels like a miracle that such a timely and meaningful film has come to fruition and I am beyond honored to have been a part of it.

FROM REAL LIFE STORY TO BOOK TO FILM: Prayers for Bobby is based upon the true story and critically acclaimed book by Leroy Aarons about a young gay man, Bobby (played by a heartbreaking Ryan Kelley), who because of his religious beliefs and family pressure, sets out to cure himself of being gay.  The attempted cure tragically ends with his suicide which instigates questioning by his mother, Mary Griffith (played powerfully by Sigourney Weaver), of her blind-faith regarding homosexuality.  She eventually becomes a gay rights activist and attempts to break this cycle of needless tragedy by telling her story.  Mr. Aarons read bout Mary's heartbreak in an article in his local paper, contacted her and she shared with him Bobby¹s journals which chronicled his struggle.  From that moment on, Mr. Aarons knew he had to write this story.

Twelve years ago,  a young gay man who had recently "come out" to his own family came across this book at a bookstore in West Hollywood.  This man was so moved by the story that he enlisted his producing partner in the journey to make it a movie for all to see.  For eleven years they doggedly pursued the development of the movie at multiple studios and networks all the while handing out copies of the book to anyone interested.  I received a copy after having luckily run into these men in the frozen yogurt aisle in Ralph's grocery store.   I wept like a baby while reading it and have since become a friends with and a huge fan of Chris Taaffe and Daniel Sladek, the passionate executive producers of this film, great guys, and two of the most remarkable human beings I have ever met!!

Last April , the movie was green lit at Lifetime and Sigourney Weaver was set to star as Mary Griffith.  I was lucky enough to audition for and eventually get to play the role of David, Bobby's loving boyfriend who represents hope in the embodiment of a young gay man with supportive parents who is at peace with homosexuality.   In June, I flew out to Detroit for 3 weeks to play the most meaningful role in my career, act with amazing actors such as Sigourney and Ryan, play my first gay character and for the first time in my life: kiss another guy!

AN IMPORTANT FILM!

I will never forget the energy and emotion on the set while filming Prayers for Bobby. The poignancy and importance of this story fueled a reverence and passion amongst producers, actors and crew alike which resulted in the most visceral movie-making I have ever experienced!  Many people involved had experienced similar hardships "coming out" and all were united in wanting to open hearts and minds toward an understanding of homosexuality.

It was admittedly a learning experience even for me, an actor, living in Hollywood, with many close gay friends.  I learned that the suicide rate is 4 TIMES  higher amongst gay teens than straight teens.  I also learned that homosexuality is definitely not a "choice" or "preference" or even something that can be taught yet it is widely feared and viewed askance!  Hopefully, films like this can reveal the ongoing discrimination for what it is, show examples of how life can be, and by doing so provide a beacon of hope to homosexuals and their families.

A PRESCIENT FILM!

This past November we elected the first African American President of the United States of America.  In that same election, California passed Proposition 8 which basically repeals the right of homosexual marriage.  In the 60's the interracial parents of our new President Barack Obama were not legally allowed to marry, segregation was rampant, and the 14th amendment of the U.S constitution, in particular the guarantee to equal protection under the law, was denied to African American citizens.   This same 14th amendment is being denied to our homosexual citizens today and I feel it is an extremely prescient time to stand up and express my disapproval.   I am reminded that "All it takes for evil to flourish is for enough good me to do nothing!"  As an actor, I am doing what I can by portraying characters like David and promoting films such as Prayers for Bobby which have the power to educate, enlighten and save lives.

WHO AM I?

I am Scott Bailey, proud American, actor, writer, artist, engineer and the kind of guy who strives to stand up for what is right and to be a part of the solution instead of part of the problem.   I try to live by the principle my grandfather, Bill J. Bailey, instilled in me: "Always leave a place better off than when you arrived." I  am a descendent of John Alden who came over on the Mayflower and I can only imagine the kind of courage it took to risk life and family in the pursuit of the freedom we now enjoy.  I am also a huge admirer of our founding fathers who risked their own power, wealth, and lives to stand up against a tyrannical government.

Growing up I had few examples of homosexuality: Liberace, Robin Williams in The Birdcage, Seinfeld's oft repeated stance "not that there is anything wrong with that...", and the occasional "that's gay!" comment.  I don¹t even remember knowing any gay people until I moved to Los Angeles.  I do, however, remember the first time I heard the comment "that's so gay!" when I was with a gay friend.  I remember it because I felt a sense of injustice and later embarrassment for not saying anything.  Thereafter I decided that I would never "not say anything" again!! Today, I know enough gay people to know that there is no difference, they are as "normal" as anyone else and simply have a different sexuality.

I AM PROUD TO BE A PART OF THIS FILM AND I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT. I am Scott Bailey and I am here to recruit you!! You may recognize that line from Harvey Milk, the first openly gay publicly elected official in the U.S. who recruited people to stand up for their own rights.  He then proceeded to lead by example.  I'd like to recruit you to watch this film and similarly stand up for what you think is right.

As a straight white guy I think it is right and important for me to stand up for the minority, don't you?  I hope I'd have stood up to give my seat to Rosa Parks, don't you?  I hope if I'd been a founding father I would have risked my life to create a better future, don't you?  I hope if I'd been around during WWII that I would¹ve volunteered to fight for freedom, don't you?  In this day and age I am proud to see an African American President, not merely because he is black but because he was the best man for the job, aren't you? I am also very disappointed that anyone in this great country is discriminated against, aren't you?  I therefore think it is a moral imperative that movies like Prayers for Bobby are made and seen! DON'T YOU?!

Scott Bailey

doesn't have a huge role in the movie, but the actor has a real presence and makes a great impact. He's basically who Bobby might have been had he not been screwed up by his family's religion. Anyway, it's so great to read stuff like this from a straight male perspective!

Beautiful.

As an English teacher, I give this essay an A+. As a gay person, I am deeply moved. As a human, I am inspired. As someone who gets totally sucked into Lifetime movies anyway but thought this sounded extraordinary from the get-go, I am planning to watch this movie and I will definitely pay close attention to Scott Bailey. May he have great success in his career and life.

Maybe a B+

The use of the word "prescient" is weird.

But thanks, Scott, for getting it. This just proves the wisdom of walking a mile in someone's shoes.

Anyone else feel old...

Reading "Growing up I had few examples of homosexuality: Liberace, Robin Williams in The Birdcage, Seinfeld's oft repeated stance "not that there is anything wrong with that...", and the occasional "that's gay!" comment."

Growing up with Robin Williams in The Birdcage? Where's my cane; I need to thump someone with it.

A True Ally

I am not the kind of person to be eternally grateful because some straight person happens to have gay friends or play a gay character, but I must say Scott Bailey's words were truly touching.

I don't know about you....

But I'm sick of straight actors playing gay characters. It's like giving a white actor the role of a black character. How about giving one of the (many) gay actors a chance. Or why did Felicity Huffman have to play a transexual? Were they afraid to put a guy in a dress? Is it only okay to have a MTF on screen if it's actually a female in the role? They even went to the trouble of giving her a prosthetic penis! Wouldn't it have saved time and money (and a little rubber) to just hire someone with an actual penis? For these gay roles, straight actors have to do all this work to explore and research the gay experience. Why not just go right to the source and hire someone who actually is gay?! Okay, that all. Just wanted to get the off my chest.

If it helps: Ms Huffman

If it helps: Ms Huffman asked the same question. "Why cast me? I'll just look like a uncomfortable woman with a lump of rubber in my pants." The director said: "Exactly." The character was a woman (penis and all) so her unfamiliarity with the appendage (among other emotions) was exactly what was called for. I had more to say but now I've got Kevin Zegers stuck in my head.

Ahem. It's true that it would be nice for actors to be out, regardless of the roles they take. I do agree with the poster below who points out that havingstraight guys play gay without so much as a shrug is probably beneficial. (American actors, at any rate. Jim Carrey playing gay is big news! Ewan McGregor-- isn't? Heh.)

Zam's picture

Despite the fact

...that gay actors have been playing straight roles since the birth of film?  Or since the early days of theatre?

Can gay roles only go to OUT gay actors?  Or to those we only speculate are gay?  What's the litmus test?

GrrrlRomeo's picture

It would be nice...

But it's a bit of a conudrum. To be a good actor you have to play a lot of different roles, and be able to play a lot of different roles. For a gay man to play a gay character, would he be typecast for life? And perhaps that would be okay if there were lots of movies with a diversity of gay characters.

metaphysicpuzzle's picture

I kinda like it...

I actually really like it when straight guys play gay characters, especially the more famous celebrities. It makes a statement - sends a message. When people (esp. teenage guys) see their favorite actor be entirely comfortable playing gay I think it starts some thought processes. I'm not sure why they would need Felicity Huffman to play an MTF. That seems a little odd to me.

On the other hand

It also makes the statement that this project is too high profile to entrust to a gay actor because they are by definition B-listers at most. When do we get our Denzel Washington in Malcom X? That movie was made 27 years after Malcom X was assassinated. It's been thirty years since Harvey Milk was assassinated and there still isn't a gay man in Hollywood powerful enough to play that part? Any part in that movie?

Do only actors count?

It was written and directed by two out gay men -- why does it have to be the ACTORS who are gay?
Dave Doty's picture

Actors and Writers

In the context of their conversation, about being high profile and the message that the general public take away from that, then yes, only actors count.  The general public don't know or care about writers.  Unless they also starred in or directed, or occassionally produced, the film as well, most people can't even tell you who wrote their personal favorite movies.

I love that he lists

I love that he lists getting to kiss another guy for the first time as a positive. From that essay, he comes across like the kind of actor who really likes acting because it affords him the opportunity to experience and see new things. Even if it's not something he'd normally do, it's still a new experience, and that's something interesting and positive! It's not jokey or a chore or gross, like many other actors take pains to point out in their publicity rounds. I'm happy to have him as an ally.

Scott was interviewed...

...in a recent issue of Soap Opera Digest (I think it was SOD, I was thumbing through the magazines in the checkout line; he previously acted on Guiding Light) and he had absolutely wonderful things to say about Prayers For Bobby, the importance of telling this story and his awe of Sigourney Weaver. He seems like a totally wonderful person.

Swell, dude

I mean my heart swells. I am so proud of Scott Bailey and everything he stands for.

When a straight man says, "some of my best friends are gay." You might question his veracity. But when a gay man, like myself, says "some of my best friends are straight," that comment probably slides by your detectors without a thought. But I want you to know that when I am talking about my best friends who are straight, I am talking about someone who is very much like Scott Bailey. He may not play for our team, but I am so glad to hear him cheering from the bleachers and telling everyone our story.

He is just awesome!

Scott seems like one of those rare actors who are well put together, geuinly sincere and intelligent!

I loved this little blog he wrote, and I agree. It really is an important movie. I just hope it can help people, especially parents who are having a hard time with their child being gay, and hopefully make the coming out process a bit easier for those who happen to be gay too.

Because he looks sexy as hell to me.

Thin

Hey, when I was 25 years old I weighed 119 pounds and was 5'10" tall.  I looked a lot like Ryan Kelley, if not thinner.  And I desperately wanted to gain weight.  I ate and ate and ate, and nothing happened.  It was just my metabolism.  I also have a friend who at the age of 24 was 117 pounds and 5'11"!  And he ate a lot too.  For neither of us was there any effort or desire to be thin.

THAT'S the kind of guy I need to date

That was a beautiful essay. It was sweet, honest and heartfelt. I really wish I knew more straight guys like Scott.

As to the earlier comments about straight actors playing gay roles, I agree with the points made on both sides as to the message it sends. Basically I think the best actor should get the part, gay or straight. Whoever can play the role.

I may be straight, but I'm not narrow.

I agree. Both characters are far too thin

Part of the reason I don't want to see this movie is that they seem to be showing the young gay guys as the stereotypical stringbeans.  While I was much thinner as a child, there was no way I could ever have been that slim.  I like eating too much for that to happen.

Frankly, I want to see some realistic gay characters on TV who aren't Playgirl centerfolds.  Bears, older guys, and men with regular body fat are also turn-ons.  But good luck convincing Hollywood about that.  Most of the gay actors or straight actors playing gay characters look like they are AIDS patients.  And whoever finds that sexy nowadays has a screw loose.

God bless you Scott Bailey

Keep talking and you may just save some lives.  There are countless Bobbys out there wishing they could kill themselves because 98% of America makes their lives hell.  Please never stop talking.  As a straight boy, straights will listen to you.  They never listen to us.  Indeed, no matter how good our lives are, they are so brainwashed that they see evil even when we are good.  Try telling your family and friends you're gay sometimes, see how many minutes it takes them all to reject you and cast you out of their lives.
Howard Boyd Shade's picture

Tell you what, I'll watch Prayers for Bobby if . . .

The gay community will bombard Lifetime with demands that they stop showing AMBUSH ADS!  Those annoying transparent and not-so-transparent promotions during the course of their programming and not during their commercial breaks.

I heard from a friend that Prayers for Bobby had a touching scene ruined by such an ad.  Sigourney Weaver was putting down six placemats but removed one when she remembered that Bobby had killed himself.  But the scene was obscured with a sentence saying "You are watching Prayers for Bobby" along with pictures of the mother and the son.

This is one kind of ambush ad I'm talking about.  The other kind is when the networks promote their upcoming shows and films with those transparent ads either on the left side of the screen or just above the bugs on the right side.  They promote their future wares enough during the commercial breaks.  They do not need to ruin the pure scenes of the programming.

If the gay community will email mylifetime.com and demand that they put an end to this awful trend, then I will watch Prayers for Bobby which is rerun on Tuesday night.  If the networks really want to invest our time into watching their programs, then they should present those programs in the purest forms possible.
