Superhero finale: Parthenon's legacy lives on

So as we know, gay hero Parthenon was eliminated last week and sadly did not make it to the Final Three and advance to last night's Who Wants to Be a Superhero? two-hour finale. But that doesn't mean that his presence on the show didn't make a lasting impact (aside from being occasionally totally hilarious, that is). In the Feedback After Show exit interview with the winner, we learn even more about the hero that we came to love over the course of the season.

*-*-SPOILERS AHEAD-*-*

So yes, the well-meaning but rather bubba-ish Defuser won the prize, which doesn't upset me but isn't terribly exciting, either. But in his exit interview with the creepy-but-kinda-hot former champ Feedback, Defuser makes a rather touching comment about his relationship with Parthenon:

"I bonded with several but I think Parthenon the deepest. He was like, 'How are your cop friends gonna feel about this? You're the big, tall cop from Texas and here I am, the gay guy from Orlando, you know? And we're the ones that are hanging out most!' And I said, 'You know what? Who gives a damn?' He was such a cool guy just to hang out with."

This echoes Parthenon's exit interview, in which he too noted that he and Defuser were best buds and even that Defuser used to crack his back every night (it's a long story and a good one worth checking out). it's neat to see these two guys from very different backgrounds bond on national television, but there's one little problem with the scenario...

We never saw it happen.

Remember, these interviews take place before these guys have seen the actual cut show. So while they may have been hanging out together all the time and might have been good friends in The Lair, in the finished product you would never know they even spoke to one another. I watched every episode and aside from a funny moment when Defuser casually brushed dirt off Parthenon's butt, I can't remember a single moment that suggested that the two were even friendly.

Kind of telling, kind of a bummer. It's nice to see that they've left discussion of the friendship in the Feedback show, but it would have been nicer to see it on television!

They never show friendships

They don't focus on that, for some reason. I also think they wanted to avoid showing much of how everyone there liked Parthenon, since he didn't win or make the final 3. They would never let a gay superhero win.

The next barrier?

First off... yay for a WWTBAS recap I wasn't expecting.

That is an interesting -- and troubling -- omission. In following the analysis of Big Brother this season, one frequent comment I heard was that Dustin was atypical for gay men on the show, since he attempted to forge friendships with everyone, while gay men on the show usually just spend their time with the women in the house. We didn't see much of that, however, on the primetime edition. Considering that the show has a reputation to casting to a certain stereotype with its gay men and that Dustin wouldn't have been cast if not for the "enemies" twist, I'm starting to wonder if the next barrier to break is the idea that straight men and gay men can be friends without sexuality getting in the way. This summer's reality TV seems to have a problem with the idea.

Friendships

You are just figuring that out?  It's really not about reality shows because this happens in real life.  Reality shows just showcase the separation between straight and gay men.

What I've noticed from life experience and reality shows is that when straight guys are in a group they will always go against gay people and women whether it's intentional or not.  When they are alone they are less discriminating.

The situation is out of gay men's hands.  The Real World: Philadelphia is a perfect example.  Willie was out from day one.  Landon and MJ stayed away while the girls formed bonds with him.  Karamo was closeted when he entered the house.  He, Landon, and MJ struck up a friendship from the start.  Once Karamo revealed he was gay they started to distance themselves from him.

I recommend reading Eve Sedgwick's Between Men: English Literature and Male Homosocial Desire and Epistemology of the Closet.

Maybe it'll be on the DVD?

Urgh.

I couldn't have been more disappointed when Defuser won. I knew he was going to win from day one - he is basically a carbon copy of Feedback IMHO. Meh, I held out hope, but oh well.

Was really hoping HS would win. :<
