Thousands gather in NYC to peacefully protest Proposition 8

Last night Andy and I headed uptown to join thousands of other concerned citizens for a peaceful demonstration outside the Mormon Church in the wake of their support of California's Proposition 8. The crowd became far too large for the street and park to hold it and soon moved down Broadway (which police shut down) to Columbus Circle, where the crowd cheered and chanted for gay marriage rights.

It was an impressive showing, to say the least. I caught glimpses of playwright Tony Kushner (Angels in America), comedienne Judy Gold, and radio/TV personality Frank Decaro nearby, and Whoopi Goldberg was at the front of the procession.

There are a few more of my crappy pics after the jump, but this site has a ton more pics and videos from the demonstration.

I'm curious to see what (or even if) the mainstream media report. Already ABC News is reporting that "hundreds of people" demonstrated and gives ample quote space to a representative from the Mormon Church.

The NY Daily News reported "over 3000" in the below video from the scene (which includes an interview with Whoopi):

The CW11 is reporting that organizers are giving a number over 10,000 but police will not estimate.

If you have pics of your own, please feel free to share them in the comments!
