"Top Design 2" has a gay winner

Last night Bravo aired the finale of its second season of Top Design, which found two gay men (Nathan and Preston) going into the last challenge. We'll go ahead and spoil it by saying that one of the gays won ... but which one?

Click on through to discuss!

Nathan's winning design

For their final challenge, the three remaining designers (Nathan, Preston and Ondine) were each asked to design the interior of an entire house. In the end Nathan took the prize for his muted, eclectic look, making him the first gay champ for the show (last year straight Matt won).

Preston's dramatic look

What did you think of the final designs? I have to agree that Nathan's was my favorite out of the three. Preston's was a bit dramatic and dark for me ... although if he would have volunteered to include himself as an accent I would have totally gone for that. (Too. Cute.)

Nathan's tranquil bedroom

And aside from that I actually really liked Nathan, for the most part (I didn't catch every episode, so correct me if I missed some grand mal hissyfit). A sense of humor and some humility will do wonders for you sometimes, right?

Preston was robbed

Preston's home was full of style and could actually be lived it. Nathan's design looked fine for a gallery or showplace, but a home? It was full of unusebale space and that "cloud' of paper plates and chikenwire looked like a grade school art project.

I respectifully disagree...

almost all season I have been hoping Nathan won as he was my favorite and he showed a great range in his work and really pulled out some lovely designs. I really liked Nathan's last design and disagree that it is not a home, perhaps not to your liking, but it was nice. Nathan's home had these personal touches that were really cool and I really loved his office room.

Preston on the other hand with his hotel aesthetic had a much  less "homey feeling" in my opinion. Although I do commend Preston on his impeccable taste.

I think the judges/producers made the right decision.  At least ricky shroder's wife didn't win...man I hated her...

If I had to chose one of them

I'd hire Preston. His style is more to my liking as something I could live with over the long term.

Nathan's stuff can have a "wow" impact but it can also become too cute and faddy IMHO. I've gone that route and suddenly one day you look around and say "dear lord, what was I thinking" and start filling trash bags to go to Goodwill.

Nathan

Nathan usually took major risks with his designs - sometimes they worked and sometimes they didn't.  His work may not be to everyone's taste, but you have to respect his willingness to put himself out there.  Preston, while having a nice asthetic, is really quite one-note (muted colors, masculine, hotel-esque).  I liked both designers (and also Ondine), but Nathan deserved the win IMO.

'Perfect PRESTON

have to cast my vote for "Perfect "Preston. Overall, his home worked more as a whole -Nathan's living areas had the WOW -except the Dixie plate chandaller but his bedrooms were lacking. Prestons entire  space was really nice -I could live in that. Now, how many enjoyed watching Jeff Lewis and his reactions to Preston -not all that subtle but they would make an interesting design duo....

Top Design Finale

Once again, the chichi, outre attitudes of the "in crowd" won out over common sense and good taste. Preston was the consistent winner almost from the beginning. If one wants to design a room, a suite, a shop, a store, a gallery, call him. If one wants to design a bar in the Village, call Nathan. That chandelier was tacky and has been done. The wasted entry way looked like a yard sale. In fact, most of what he offered in this finale was straight out of a Beverly Hills rummage sale.

No, judges, you blew it again. You blew it when you sent Terri home instead of that creepy little character (Whatsit) and now, you blew it on the big one. Admit it, judges, you choked.
