Two-Bite Interview: Project Runway's Jack Mackenroth's sister
As anyone with even a fraction of a gay gene in their body knows, the fourth season of Project Runway premieres tonight on Bravo with the gayest cast of competitors ever. One such competitor is Jack Mackenroth, a literal Jack-of-all-trades who lists everything from male model to AIDS educator to competitive swimmer on his impeccably-designed resume.
Competition reality shows are notoriously protective of their casts before the shows launch, and really, there's usually not much we could get out of them at this stage without a water board anyway. So we've opted to take a different approach and interview Jack's sister, Sarah Kietzer, to get the dirt on the dashing designsketeer.
And yes, I'm totally serious.
AfterElton.com: What makes Jack uniquely qualified to be on Project Runway?
Sarah Kietzer: He's talented, witty, smart and fun. I know people also think he's soooo "cute" but I hope the t.v viewing public don't just sexualize him, but see him as a gifted artisan ... just kidding, I could care less.
AE: He's a great designer, a competitive swimmer, a fitness and fashion model, and an AIDS educator. He can't be this perfect. What's his dark secret? Horrible breath? Secretly a serial killer? What?
SK: Jack is really very honest and open so I don't think he has too many dark secrets. That is not to say he is perfect ... please ... when he is watching T.V, it's almost impossible to get his attention, I could be set on fire in front of him and he wouldn't even notice. Oh yeah, he will call me sometimes and talk for a second and then say "okay I have to let you go cuz I am busy" and I am thinking ... um, you called me. He has a tendency to talk really loudly, with his "outside voice", even inside. (I think his iPod has caused hearing loss) He is a minor league slob (not personal hygiene but at home). And lastly, just because I know that this interview can only be so long, he is sometimes distracted, and by sometimes I mean often. He's an artist and I think his mind wanders ... away from what I am saying ... probably like the AfterElton readers right now.
All that being said ... he is a great guy, I love him and I wouldn't change anything about him.
AE: Is he older or younger than you?
SK: Older and he definitely looks it. We also have a younger brother named Adam and he also looks older than me. Years older, really.
AE: What kind of brother was he like growing up?
SK: Protective, encouraging, fun. I loved him and looked up to him.
AE: He's obviously a hunk. Did you friends in school try to get you to set them up with him?
SK: No. Not really. Jack was a late bloomer. He was only 4'11 as a freshman in high school. He came home from Berkeley for my graduation and my friends were like ..."Is that Jack? He's hot".
AE: What was your reaction when he came out to you?
SK: Well ... I already knew ... duh. Our entire family loved him before he "officially" came out and his sexual orientation certainly didn't change anything. I know it made our relationship closer because he could share more of his life with us.
AE: What's Jack's worst fashion faux paus ever?
SK: In his first year at Berkeley he rocked a platinum blonde bob.
AE: With whom would you like to fix him up?
SK: Ryan Seacrest
AE: Anything else we should know about him before the show starts?
SK:
- Jack's a savvy financial planner and recently purchased a home in Manhattan.
- When he was a little kid he rode his bike into a boat parked on the side of the road...requiring twelve stitches.
- In high school, his teacher let him paint murals throughout the art studio which remained untouched for years until a recent remodeling.
- He once adopted a blind boxer. Maxx. RIP little buddy.
- He loves eighties music and style.
- He has numerous tattoos that he designed ... each having a different significance in his life.
- He used to be quite good in French.
- His younger brother Adam was a division 1 football player for the Washington State Cougars and his grandfather played professional football for the Detroit Lions.
- He is extremely allergic to avocado, banana and latex.
- He once taught design at a small college in Atlanta.
- His mother is a nurse at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and his biggest fan.
- He enjoys a good hardware store.
- He loves scary movies.
Lastly, when we were kids he used to steal my barbies ... shocker.
