Two Gay Guys video blog: Cleaning up after the AfterElton readers' choice poll

Brent and Michael (aka Two Gay Guys) are classic multi-taskers. In this week's episode, they manage to discuss the conversation-starting top placers in the AfterElton.com Top 25 Gay TV Characters Poll while managing to do some housework at the same time. Now I know how these two manage to get so much done even after their Flying Monkeys have flown south for the winter.

If you had strong feelings about Brian Kinney or Jack MacFarland snagging the top spots in the poll, you'll definitely want to check this out. Me, I enjoyed it most for the chance to see my boss clean a toilet. "Celebrities ... They're Just Like Us!"

RIGHT ON!!!!

Awesome VBlog guys!!!! And I agree with what you said. I did vote for Brian Kinney, but not Jack MacFarland. But I agree with what you said about him too. Look at the show Rosanne. Is every working Mom like Rosanne? No! My Mom hated that show. But her charcter was representative of some households and she was funny.

Anyway, thanks for another great video. And I think you did a fine job cleaning the toilet! :)

thanks for trying to diffuse the situation.

the top two choices still stink, though. it'll take more than scrubbing to remove that rotten stench.

Great video blog!

More than 60% of Americans get their information about gay people from the media.  Making portrayals of gay people are incredibly important in how we are perceived.  I couldn't agree with you more, Michael, the general public wants to see the stereotypes for their own entertainment and to validate their prejudices.

Evan, validation of stereotypes

is unfortunately popular because it makes a complex world seemingly more simple.  Gay people have their own share of stereotypes especially when it comes to race and physical attributes.  As well with physical attractiveness and how appealing a person's personality is (physically attractive people's negative traits are downplayed, just imagine if Brian Kinney had looked like Ted would he still have been #1?).

Cheers

Great Video Blog Michael & Brent

the thing I found fascinating about QAF was how so many gay people thought it represented "their culture" that it was "their show".  Well actually it was a skewed portrayal of a sub-culture that probably only represents a small percentage of gay people in the world.  If you count China and India the vast majority of gay people still live very closeted lives.

I could relate to QAF because I am white, live in a big city with lots of openly gay people, and participated in many of the activities portrayed in QAF.  Underwear parties, circuit parties, dancing nearly all night at my favourite bar, etc., etc..  QAF never had any Asian men or Black men or white men that only go for one of those two groups.  A big oversight I thought.  Toronto has a huge Asian gay population that are very active in the community.  I guess Pittsburgh is more homogeneous.

Finally, I wonder what the results would have been if the voters had, let us say, a close encounter of the intimate kind with a Brian Kinney type.  I did and it was one of the worse nights of my life!  I guess he did not pick up on my lack of enthusiasm (not surprising considering how self-centred he was) because he asked for "round 2".  I said thanks but no thanks.  He never forgave me and still gives me the cold shoulder 17 years later!   Gee I am crushed (not).

Cheers

I'm not sure you really understood QAF...

Well, what you don't understand is that Queer as folk showed a lot of good sides and aspects of gay people and gay life, as well as the more shady, dirty ones. Brian Kinney was actually a beautiful character in many ways, and we saw how he developed throughout the 5 seasons. You also don't seem to understand that qaf never tried to "show what gay life is really like". They just told a story of a group of friends living in Pittsburgh. And what drew us to QAF was the interesting characters. They were beautiful, intelligent, 3 dimentional characters with layers and depth. They were believable. This show was important because it showed these characters as intelligent, fully dimentional human beings. And Cowlip never shied away from the darker, dirtier sides of the characters. They showed them as beautiful, but yet flawed characters that you could believe in. And that's the whole point: We don't want som polished "Gay as blazes" characters! We want good storylines with believable characters! So before your critizise Qaf and Brian Kinney, you should understand what the show was about and what the legendary Brian Kinney stood for. There will never again exist a more influential, interesting and credible character on television. Brian Kinney is LEGENDARY! And Gale Harold is a damn fine actor! (And I'm so happy that he will return to Desperate Housewives May 3rd!!!)
