Two Gay Guys video blog: Gay kisses

In this week's edition, Two Gay Guys (Michael and Brent) discuss just what it is about the sight of two men kissing that is so terrifying to some people. And really, if "a kiss is just a kiss," why do YouTube and As the World Turns treat gay kisses differently than straight ones?

Pucker up and enjoy!

    two words...

    THEY'RE. STUPID.

^ I got a friend with the cutest little sister and she heard him talking about discrimination and all that...and she asked him "what's wrong with you having a boyfriend?" and he said "oh, some people think it's bad" and she simply said "they're stupid."  - - he said that he's been out since she was born (she's like 6 or 7) and she has never had a problem with it (his boyfriends, kissing them, etc)...even at her young age. thought it was pretty damn cool. :-)

anyway...yeah, the video blog made me remember that. :-P

    That was funny!  And

That was funny!  And somewhat sad, too.

The first time I saw two men kiss was in the movie Deathtrap.  I was watching it with my stepmother one day, I was about 11 or 12, and had already sort of figured out that I was "different."  When they kissed, she gasped in horror and changed the channel.

Now, I think there's few things more sexy than two men kissing.

...was also the first time I saw two men kissing, and I, too, was watching the movie with my stepmother--though we were actually in a cinema (I was a huge Christopher Reeve fan, having seen Superman and Superman II something like twenty million times). My stepmom was totally cool--it didn't seem to faze her at all, or she didn't say anything negative about it. Me, on the other hand, it was like a whole new world had opened up to me.

Much later, I'll never forget I was in a theater showing The Wedding Banquet in Orlando and when the two male leads kissed early in the film, some redneck in the audience quite audibly muttered, "I'm not sitting through a whole movie of two guys kissing!" and another male voice from somewhere else in the audience quite audibly muttered back "Deal with it."

    It's true that people have

It's true that people have to see gay people kiss on TV and in real life to "get used to it" or something, because the first time you see something it may come as a shock, but the second time - not so much. And after a few times you probably just don't care, and think about it the way you would think about two straight people kissing. I was 13 when I first saw two guys kiss on TV and that was in the British version of Queer as folk. I live in sweden and I was up very late every monday just so that I could watch that show, cause I really loved it. At first I was surprised at what they showed but then I just didn't noticed it very much and didn' think of it any different. I wonder what I would have thought about it if I was around the age I am now (20) when I'd first seen two guys on TV kiss, maybe I would have thought it was strange or something because it would've been so new to me?  Still never seen that in real life, not even two guys holding hands or anything like that (I'm a girl).

And the YouTube thing is so stupid, isn't there anything we can do?

(sorry if my english is a little bad...)

    Hmmm

Great video guys...well except for that disgusting kiss at the end...:):):

I was wondering too...for how many of us did we view our first man-man kiss in a gay porn movie and not on tv or in a mainstream movie?  When i was growing up (i'm 43) we didn't have showtime, QAF, etc and there was no chance of seeing two guys kiss anywhere on tv et al...so we turned to porn not just for sex but to see any type of contact or intimacy betweent two men...that's a bit depressing.  I need a cookie to cheer me up now...

     Peace.

For two pure individuals who never were corrupted by gay porn, your last kiss was pretty steamy and porn-like. lol Thankfully this vlog is not rated NC-17... :D

    Sadly.....

Michael said to me earlier today, "You know, it seems like the only time we kiss these days is when we film the vlog..." Which isn't really true at all. But it's KINDA true sometimes, at least when were both swamped.

    Finally, a good....

...kiss between you two (made *really* good by the fact that my computer had slowed down to a crawl right when I was watching this- it was like slo mo)

The first time I saw two guys kiss was when I was 19, my gay friend sat on his boyfriend and gave him a good, wet one. I was entranced by it, and since then, can't get enough of guys kissing.

Over time if it becomes common people won't think any of it

It's like interracial dating . If you asked someone in the 70s or 80s- they might think it was odd, but less so now.

    Another great vlog guys.

Another great vlog guys. Becoming one of my favourite parts of After Elton.

Now for the most stupid question of the week (its little things like this that drive me crazy)...your choice of shirts this week...intentional or unintentional mocking of ATWT?

    Alas, no

We're good, but we're not that good!

However, you can choose to read anything you want into the vlog. Except that we're straight, which would kinda defeat the point. ;-)

    Shocking Sights

Speaking of which, Michael the mustache doesn't work.  You're a good looking guy and it distracts from your better facial features. ;-)

It pays to remember that Americans as a whole are less open to physically demonstrative behavior between men in general.  In many countries it is very normal for male friends to hold hands in public or to kiss each other (typically on the cheek) in greeting.  In America such behavior is usually seen as either "foreign" or (more likely) a sign of homosexuality.  Thus straight men have a conditioned negative response to such sites.

I also remember from the Hite Report on Male Sexuality (published back in 80's) one of the questions posed to male survey subjects was about being kissed by another man.  Although the question did not specify a passionate kiss, most of the responses automatically assumed it was and several recipients said they'd react violently.  One even said he'd bite the other man's tongue off!

This is why the scene in Deliverance of rape is okay.  It was intended to provide the audience with a sense that the subsequent killing seem justifiable (even praiseworthy) to the audience.  The mountain men deserve to die because of perversion.  If they'd simply been doing something like robbing the canoeists then murder might have seemed an extreme response.  Homosexuality as an incitement to violence was very acceptable at the time. Today it is not deemed so generally (although it still is by many individuals and groups).  But the sight of it is enough to offend many.

Also, especially as gays have become more integrated into society and the main gay rights questions revolve around partnership rights and/or marriage, a different issue has arisen.  For a long time anti-gay folks liked to portray gays as weird, sex-obsessed and promiscuous.  The idea that gays do fall in love and form committed relationships is in defaince of what they believe.  The Vatican has said several times that "true love" can only exist between a man and a woman for example, thus implictly arguing that gay love is somehow inferior or false.

Since many people, straight men in particular, define themselves in how they are not like gays, there is a hostility to showing any similarities between them and us.  Straight men in America don't hold hands in public because they believe that what's gay men do.

Things are changing, younger people are becoming more relaxed.  Consider that decades ago a man kissing a woman in cinema or on TV was making a dramatic scene.  Casual kissing or affection was rare compared to such depictions today.  Likewise, I think that they are catching up regarding us, just not on ATWT.

    Aw, man....

Michael, I vote that the mustache is just fine. You look great with or without it.

Also, great vlog, and yes, this week's eventual kiss was the best yet!

Can you, in future, do that

Can you, in future, do that full on snog, on your future blogs please, it's much better than the peck you normally do. After all, if that is the only kissing you two are getting at the moment you just as well make it a good one.
