The Wrap with Two Gay Guys! video blog: "X-Files", "Mamma Mia!", and more

Two Gay Guys are back to discuss what's hot in gay entertainment. What's up with the homophobic X-Files movie? And why are the critics savaging Mamma Mia!? And don't even get them started on anti-gay science fiction author Orson Scott Card...

Check it all out, after the break!

I really enjoyed this conversation about Card, because I'm torn too. . .Art and free speech vs gay blacklisting? . . ."interesting debate" is an understatement.

But then. . .I have to agree with whitetee. . .and hell, he got cyber hugz.

Okay...

First, very interesting debate on Orson Scott Card. Life isn't so easy as we sometimes want it to be. But then again, if it was, it would be boring.

Second, I have always thought the two of you were cute. But Brent, what have you been doing? You are SMOKING!!!!!!!! And your secret is...????

BTW, nice format for your vlog.

smokin' Brent...

...I know...no glasses. Contacts now? Or that laser thingy?

"No Smoking in Building" means Brent has to leave.

well, like i said...

like i said before, his work brings in money, and thats what people will go for. i can't speak for all his fans...he probably has some fans that agree with him on his views.

now, this being 2008 and all....i highly doubt he's gonna turn into some huge mega movie/director star or whatever. ((being racist or homophobic in Hollywood is pretty risky these days...at least, if you're public about it.))

I kind of agree with the whole "seperate the art from the artist" thing....(i probably phrased that totally wrong) but in this case....i don't think i can.

yeah, his work may be awesome, but if i were to buy his books....i'd be putting more money in his pocket and more power for him to sit there and say "oh, people like liz deserve to be put in jail for being gay...she's ruining our democracy, blah blah" (yeah, last time i checked, i wasn't out raping children or beating animals...but whatever dude)  - - -i do wonder if he gets turned on by lesbians and thinks that's okay..PFT

I am all for freedom of speech. i am not for spreading hate. there is a difference, i think. i guess that doesn't make sense, but if i tried to explain it...this would turn into a novel, so i'll just end it at that.

Great vlog guys!!!

I always enjoy your vlogs and look forward to them. I love the new format but are you still going to do your little skits that I find hilarious and tremendouly inventive?

As for Card, I keep wondering if he actually wrote any of his books or he had a ghost writer write them since everyone is saying he had sympathetic gay characters in his novels. I cannot see such a homophobe including gay characters in his novels and making them likeble and giving them depth, I would think it would be the other way around. I personally never knew anything about him until he was mentioned here. I am so fed up with all these homophobe's drivel. In other comments I have dissed religion and this is another reason. I am Wiccan and have never accepted organized religion (I was raised Catholic). All the homophobia seems to stem from religion and it makes me more antagonistic towards religion.

Brent your comment "don't worry" when you introduced the Unwrapped portion and Michael was starting a striptease was cute but I personally would love to see either of you do a strip tease. You both are so delicious.

As for the X-files, I too used to watch the show and loved it but I don't think I will see the movie. First NO ALIENS!!!!!!!! WTF. X-files = Aliens and supernatural beings. What were they thinking. Obviously someone was brain dead when writing the script. Too much drugs will do this. Second, a gay man wanting his lover to have the body of a woman? Do these writers live in this world? And do we consider them WRITERS at all? My cat can write a better plot.

Again great vlog. Keep up the snark and give us pleasure.

they've stripped before! somewhat....

didn't you see their episode on underwear?! well they didnt have any pants on and cant remember if they always had shirts....

Wait a minute! We are serious journalists and

I resent the implication that we've appeared clad only in our underwear on our vlog. Would you imply that about Anderson Cooper? Oh, wait...never mind. LOL.

Forgot to mention

How could I forget Mamma Mia!

I LOVEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD it (jumping up and down). Have to go see it again and when it comes out on DVD gotta see it some more.

Pierce's voice has a lot to be desired. Why they even had him sing is beyond me. I cringed when he started singing.

Meryl Streep was fantastic and I didn't even know she sings.

I just wish hunky Colin Firth had actually kissed his boyfriend. God when he was in his shorts sitting on the boat I almost had a wet dream while still awake. YUMMMMMMY.

I agree with every word you wrote

Including the part about Colin in his shorts! This my "Best Picture" nominee for the year.

'Mama Mia' confused me...

There were more than a couple of times when I wasn't sure what movie I was watching. I saw...

..."handsome" women in drag:

...and faaaaaaabulous travel sequences:

...peppered with ABBA music...

So what did I see?

nice to see your vlog again

Both of you guys seem a little different in this episode. I think you appear bubblier and happier. It must be great to be together again after being separated for three weeks.

I'm disappointed to hear that the X-Files movie didn't live upto its potential. I was a fairly big fan back in the day, and I would have liked to have been able to enjoy this movie.

The Orson Scott Card debate is not simple. The important thing, in my opionion, is to empower the consumer to make their own decision. (Which is what you guys have been doing.) People who feel Card's work has value for its own sake, despite his personal beliefs, still have the choice to buy from him. People for whom the experience of enjoying Card's work would be ruined by knowing his personal stance have the information to make an informed decision. This not the same thing as demanding that the material becomes unavailable, which is what the Harry Potter haters did. That was censorship.

Of course, this just means that the debate will continue on the individual level. The answer isn't easy if you enjoy literature, especially science-fiction. For myself, the fact that he didn't seem to have these views when he was younger makes me more comfortable reading his older books, although I would still be uncomfortable paying for it. I would probably get it from a library. However, I would avoid any new product, book or movie, associated with him.

Cineastes can be a sexist bunch

Film critics, and those who aspire to such consideration, can and are a sexist bunch, and even many of the female critics buy into this idealogy: that the situations and events of men's lives are more interesting and deeper than those of women's lives.

This has always been the case: in the 30s, 40s, 50s, when the women's picture was a major genre and source of revenue for the studios, critics dismissed the films of the genre's top directors (John M. Stahl, Douglas Sirk), who had to be rediscovered and re-assessed by Europeans before Americans could accept them as the truly artistic achievements that they are. Such is the case today, when true women's picture directors such as Adrian Lyne and Luis Mandoki are tossed aside in favor of excessively acclaimed (but really shallow and bland) filmmakers such as Paul Greengrass and Christopher Nolan.

Even then, however, I think the viciously negative reaction to Mamma Mia! (and Sex and the City) isn't just about dismissing the stories of women, or the film's choppy editing and slap-dash approach to filmmaking; there seems to a genuine hatred for women, for anything effeminate, that has seeped into these reviews. It's shocking and revelatory.

books

Hey Brent, I've read Geography Club, Order of the Poison Oak, and Split Screen.  Are there going to be any more books in that series?  Just wondering.

Anyways, great blog!!  I agree with Whitetee, you guys are pretty cute together.

Brent Hartinger's picture

I want to write another

I want to write another sequel (focusing on Kevin), but right now my publisher and I are waiting to see if and when the GOEGRAPHY CLUB movie gets made. If it does, we'll move ahead with another book. If not, that might be the end of the series at least for while. Still, I do have a couple more gay teen novels in the works!

What are Meryl's chances...

...of getting a Grammy nomination? The soundtrack album's a big hit already, and it was released well within the period of eligibility. So it might qualify in some of the competetive categories for albums. But could Streep snag a nod in the Female Pop Performance category for one of the solo tracks (I'm thinking "The Winner Takes It All")? What are the rules to qualify (assuming, of course, she'd even want to submit her name)

Mama Mia

Gee, guys. Do you think that what might be limiting the popularity of Mama Mia is that none of the actors can sing? Pierce Brosnan sounds moronic when he sings. Or, could it be that the author has taken a bunch of really good songs and force-fit them into an improbable plot, sort of like a jigsaw puzzle of a Jackson Pollock painting. Doesn't really work. (I went to see it for Domonic Cooper shirtless. I thought it was great!!)
Michael Jensen's picture

Actually, it's hugely popular -- just not with men. And

I thought the singing worked perfectly in the context of the movie. Even Pierce's warblings have started to grow on me!
David Ehrenstein's picture

"Mamma Mia" was clearly designed for everyone who has been--

singing ABBA songs in the shower for years. It's about inspired amateurism -- even though Meryl is a true professional. It longs for a Rocky Horror Picture Show reaction to its bubbly silly self.

Hey, did you guys rename

Hey, did you guys rename chewing the fat to unwrapped? or atleast there was another one like this that had Zap it! and if memory serves "garn it with the gay garland of glory."

I've been to a few conventions in my relatively short time and i have come to a conclusion on Sci fi novels and their lack of gay characters. Pretty much all of the writers are straight white male nerds who would have a hard time getting a date if they weren't authors. that and everyone thinks that a gay novel needs to be about coming out or dealing with their "gayness". which i dont nessisarily mind (the former that is) but it has to be done well. And not many people can do that. Brent, one of the reasons i enjoy your books is because it is not always about coming out but about the relationships and how they can change the way we look at life. I would like to see a novel with the main character being gay but not coming out or living a life of shame and hiding everytime someone looks at them (i think i'm being harsh here). Another author whose done a good job of writing with a central gay lead is Perry Moore. (i think i'm rambling now:D)

Good memory!

Actually it's a work in progress. But yeah, we saved the "zapped" clip because I thought it looked cool!

I'm late to the discussion

I'm late to the discussion about Orson Scott Card.  People have the freedom to say what they want and other people have the freedom to react to it.  I don't think there's an appropriate uniform response.  I'm with Michael.  It would be hard for me to support OSC.  A compromise would be to check his books out from the library, to minimize his benefit.
