UK TV kicks US TV's behind: Mitch Hewer and Russell Tovey get cheeky

Out actor Russell Tovey

Not that we needed further proof that American television is woefully behind the rest of the world in terms of censorship and content, but when the evidence is this round and perky, it's hard to ignore it.

Just this week on British television, two young actors bared their buns in two different dramas. Actually, probably a dozen more actors in a dozen more shows did the same, but for our purposes we'll focus on these fellas. Wait, did I say "focus"? I meant "drool".

First up is gay actor Russel Tovey, in the BBC drama Being Human. Well, the title says it all, really, as Tovey is featured as stripped-down and human as you can get several times in the show. Here's a relatively demure shot, and I've snuck in a few racier pics after the jump.

Did I mention that Tovey plays a werewolf in this show? I guess even werewolves are manscaping in 2008.

Folks may know Tovey as sporty Rudge from The History Boys, but many don't know that he's openly gay. We're looking to see much more of this talent in the future ... wait, let me rephrase that ...

Our other bun-flasher is Mitch Hewer, who plays the beloved gay character Maxxie on the teen drama Skins. Nice to see that an otherwise straight show about teen relationships is objectifying the gay kid just like it does everyone else ... and it certainly doesn't hurt that Hewer has a body that could make a Bishop kick a hole in a stained-glass window.

Enjoy more pics (a few are NSFW) after the jump! (For more, check out this site, who was kind enough to screencap all of this wonderfulness.)

This is so great that Russel Tovey is out, I didn't know. He was also great in this year Christmas episode of Doctor Who, Voyage of the Damned.

Being Human

Great Series .... there is something so intereting about Tovey.. I think it's his ears... i can't wait for the next episode... it reminds me of 'Hex', but much better writing.

Russel Tovey

Russel is back again on UKTV in the 6 March episode of "Life on Mars" sequel "Ashes to Ashes" - playing a 1981 gay man.

I'd advise anyone interested to get a hold of the recent issue of "Doctor Who Magazine" where he discusses playing Midshipman Frame in the Christmas Special and specifically his intentions for an action figure of the character. Brilliantly smutty interview.

Russel Tovey is so cool,

Russel Tovey is so cool, really excellent in the History Boys of course. I hope Being Human is commissioned it rocked. Mitch Hewer from skins is bloody gorgeous-- its so great that Maxxie being gay isn't the entirity of his character too, he isn't just "the gay one" which is always nice. To conclude: everybody should watch skins. Its immense for so many reasons.

I only know Russel from The

I only know Russel from The History Boys and had no idea he was gay (but since I bet my friend at least one of them was, I still get twenty bucks). Being human sounds really interesting and...

He was in Voyage of the Damned? *must go back and rewatch*

I want to be a hero like Captain Jack Harkness, kicking butt and snogging anything with a pulse! Besides, then I get a sexy receptionist of my very own.

Hello!

Delurking to say that the Russell Tovey love is very much alive and well!

The show was ace (even before you factor in how lovely he is) and there is now an online petition urging the BBC to make a full series.

Go to http://www.readingchronicle.co.uk/articles/6/492 and scroll down to the bottom for info on how to sign.

Being Human has been commissioned! Although in slightly depressing news for Russell Tovey fans they aren't confirming casting yet.

Thought you'd be interested anyway though :)
