Van and Jake judge the "InTurn" same-sex kiss challenge

Luke and Noah will be on As the World Turns today (and I will be here to hold your hands through the tough spots, as usual), but we've actually got a double-dose of Nuke thanks to the new episode of the online reality competition InTurn. In case you haven't been keeping tabs (not that I'd blame you, really), the online series gives a stable of soap wannabes a crack at scoring a 13-week contract at As the World Turns, provided they can shine in a series of daytime challenges that range from giving birth on a parkbench to walking down the aisle.

This week's challenge was the "first kiss" screen test, and the show decided to pair up two of the guys and two of the girls in order to make things more interesting (they left Justin with a lady, which I'm sure has nothing to do with the fact that he is the only male left who doesn't mention a wife or girlfriend in his bio. Just sayin'!). While the boy/girl couple did alright and the ladies really pulled it out (blonde Nell, in particular), the boys cracked and blew the kiss and the scene.

While this was embarrassing enough, what made it even more uncomfortable was the fact that the judges for this challenge were Oakland's Alpha Gay Couple, Luke (Van Hansis) and Noah (Jake Silbermann). Van and Jake don't hesitate to drop the hammer on the guys for wimping out of a very simple challenge, and good for them. But am I the only one who is a bit put off by the talk of the Nuke kiss being "the most talked about" in the show's history? Not to mention straight guy Peyton's mention that even a guy totally "secure in his masculinity" would have trouble with the scene ... uh, do you mean "secure in his sexuality"?

Anyway, you can watch it yourself after the jump and see what you think.

    hah!

I love the "WTF?" look Jake gave the other judges when the "straight" guys were murdering their scene. It just makes me want to kidnap him and keep him all to myself even more....Did I just say that out loud?

I did however think that overall the scenes were pretty badly acted. There was no sense that this kiss just sort of surprised the people involved. It's a scene about cooking where a kiss happens. Everyone went in focus on "the kiss".

why can't everyone be as wise as me? ;->

    make under

Before parading their homophobia before the world, they're tortured with a make over by day times worst hair stylists.

The women were smokin. But what were the producers thinking when they made two unprepared heterosexual guys kiss in front of the world? That this makes good t.v.? Or that this makes sensationalistic T.V.? And why should the actors be asked to do it, because ATWT gained worldwide notice and only because ATWT gained worldwide notice over a gay kiss and therefore two actor dudes should expect the random kiss on a soap that needs a ratings boost? They shouldn't expect a random kiss on a soap because daytime drama has finally realized that gay characters are an essential part of our life and need to be drawn into the story-lines in a fair and inclusive way.

Any Man secure in his masculinity...", come on, did he really say that? I mean, any homophobe, but many men I know would enjoy kissing either of those dudes, as long as they didn't talk beforehand.

They get points for this instalment because at least they kept God Goutman in a cage where he belongs.

    Unsexy kiss

Yeah, that was a pretty squeemish and unsexy scene between the straight boys.  From the hand bump (oy...we're still manly men, cool yeah *bump*) to the awkward open-mouth attack-of-the-face-to-get-it-over-with kiss, I practically had to watch it hiding through my fingers.  And yeah, the whole "even a guy totally secure in his masculinity would have trouble" really set the mood for insta-chemistry.  Moron.

As for Justin, I had no clue whether any of the guys might be gay.  But afterwards, when he said he would've been more comfortable with a guy, I clued in pretty quickly.  Heh.

    I thought he didn't want a guy

I thought Jason said he was glad he didn't get pared with one of the guys. That could be read two ways, that he didn't want to kiss a guy or he didn't want to kiss a homophobe. I took him to mean the later.

And on second thought, they shouldn't have had the actors kiss each other, they should have been practicing something that they would more likely be asked to do if they won the job: like kissing Goutman's ass.

    Definition Of Homophobic

Nukely  -  I'm curious about how you define the concept of "homophobia".  In its original sense it would simply be "fear of homosexuality", but its actual meaning has morphed a bit over the years.  From the American Heritage Dictionary:  "Fear of or contempt for lesbians and gay men. "

You said the two straight guys kissing were homophobic.  Did you mean that in the original, somewhat antiquated sense, or in the more current sense?  Clearly, they don't hold contempt for gay people, and I don't discern any actual fear of gay people.  They were uncomfortable kissing another man, but that doesn't in any way rise to the definition of the term.  I don't have any problem with straight guys being uncomfortable with that.  With modern concepts of masculinity that is a challenge to them.  That in no way translates into holding gay people in contempt or being afraid of them.  They can be uncomfortable with that all they like as long as they treat me as an equal.

    Okay...the straight guys were awful

I just don't get how any actor, regardless of their sexual orientation, could have such qualms about a romantic scene with their partner. I think the female couple, gave the best performance of the challenge. They made it seem like it was a first kiss between them. The male/female couple seemed a bit off, because they acted like they had already had their first kiss. They were too familiar with each other.

The two guys....they were just awful. What was with the fist bump that they shared? I stopped watching after that bit in the clip, so I don't know how the judges rated any of the paired couples.
