News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Video: "The Real World: Brooklyn" premiere

Yesterday Lyle posted his IMHO on the premiere of the 21st Real World Season, set in my own hometown of Brooklyn. From Lyle's take and the comments that followed, it looks like folks are pretty shocked to see that the mother of all reality shows has returned to old form by focusing on people and relationships rather than hot tubs and booze. Plus, with a gay man, a transgender woman and a bisexual woman in the cast, it's the most diverse group of roommates ever in terms of sexual identity.

If you missed the ep and want to check it out, I've posted the entire premiere after the jump. I'll go on the record and say that I've never watched a whole episode of The Real World before ... ever. But this one pulled me in, and I'm interested to see more.

Like i said interesting

Like i said interesting group of people,every1 is hating on Ryan but i think he is funny and like he said he is not used to knowing transgender people so i will not pass judgement just yet.JD is a nice, smart and sexy guy i love that he tried to help Katelynn out but from the preview i think he may have some issues from his shildhood and maybe inherited some of his fathers violent behavior.THe real venom in that house will be Chet.

looks good

Real World Brooklyn looks promising.... certainly it looks far better than the Hollywood catastrophe or the Denver Scream-In or the Las Vegas Straight Homophobe Slut Fest.

JD looks like a great guy.  We'll just have to see if homophobia raises its ugly head in a big way.

yes

and because it isn't full of barbies and looking like a playboy mansion, i will watch it again. The transgender (post-op m2f) angle is cool, because it is a lifestyle that not everyone understands and perhaps Katelynn will shed some light on the popular MTV franchise. I already like her. The bisexual woman, Sarah, in her confessional asks 'where are the bimbos?'. Not to say that sex won't come up because it will, I am hoping it isn't focused on that this year like it has in the past.

Having said all that, lets see what  comes of JD's extra large magnum condom in next week's episode as there are previews of it. I like Ryan's comment that he isn't suprised because JD is latino, or hispanic as he puts it.

What does everyone think of Chet (a straight virgin progressive purse/fanny pack wearing morman who likes purple)??? I was ok with him until I saw his prank with his brother on MTV's website, that was just gross, and someone other than me on this blog has prolly seen it too.

For years i was successful

For years i was successful at blocking any and all reality tv from my pc, but then you guys started reporting on Charcus and they where soo frakking adorable i just had to watch and now this...i'm becoming a reality tv junky :[

Yep Ryan ain't the homopobe.

Watched the "Dailies" and saw the JD-Ryan-Chet unedited version on the stairs. Ryan may be a borderline alcoholic but he ain't what I consider to be a homophobe. Plus I agree about JD - he may not be a poster-child for GLAD. BUT this may be a verrrry interrrsesting season - I am hoping so!

Calling a transgendered

Calling a transgendered woman "It" doesn't exactly strike me as very "enlightened," especially when you are living in the same house.

Agreed.

Even completely getting it wrong with either a "he" or a "she" is leaps and bounds better than saying "It".

I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.

Remember, though, he

Remember, though, he immediately backed away from the "it" comment when called on it, and stressed that he was totally ignorant about the subject and didn't get it.  I think some of us are sometimes a bit naive about how many str8 folks don't understand LGBT issues, and how many have never really known anyone from our community.  Most everyone probably knows OF someone who's LGBT, but many if not most str8 people aren't really close with one of us.  So for my part I'm willing to be tolerant of anyone who admits his ignorance and is willing to learn.  And Ryan strikes me as someone who is indeed willing to learn.

I haven't seen any previews or anything beyond the first episode, but JD strikes me as overall the most mature of the bunch.  Which is remarkable, considering his childhood.  Though maybe there are cracks that will show later on....

Janet's picture

You are being too soft...

...on him by giving him a pass on this. Calling someone an "It" is not a LGBT issue, it's a lack of common decency.  I watched the whole clip too, and ignorance is no excuse. Even most children would know better than this. Just my two cents.

But Kaitlan does the gay snark!

I actually love her for dragging in three ways and fivesomes (which really are totally un wieldable). However she drops the "breeder" bomb in the middle of the sex discussion and you could argue that the LGBTB are doing payback. But I truly believe that it was not her intent to start a war but in the process of finding her true self - sort of lost subtlety for straights and who could really find heavy fault in that? Ryan has some very interesting things to say about the war in Iraq - an unlike some boobies from elsewhere we should concede that he is a true veteran and NOT an ex-soldier (or I'll show up at your place with MY M-16!

I didn't mean to imply I

I didn't mean to imply I was giving him a pass.  It was a really dumb and insensitive thing to say.  But when I react to people I try to see what I can of what's in their heart and/or soul, and not slam someone for something said out of ignorance.  To someone who's ignorant of the transgender situation they sometimes, as was clearly the case with Ryan, genuinely don't know what they're dealing with.  In this case, Katelynn was born as a boy, but now clearly isn't a boy.  However, Ryan has trouble seeing how she can be female after being born a boy, and so he doesn't know which pronoun to use.  In a conversation out of Katelynn's hearing he made a bad choice, was called on it by someone who clearly knew more than he, and he realized he made a bad choice.  Should we now consider him evil because of that, or should we give him the benefit of the doubt while we observe how his relationship with Katelynn and his understanding evolve in the future?

I've certainly said some dumb things out of ignorance, or some insensitive things out of a lack of thought.  Some of them make me shudder to this day.  But those comments don't represent what I am.  We have yet to see what Ryan is really made of, but personally I'm withholding judgment until I see more.

Who wants those anyway, posterchildren are boring.I would much rather watch some1 who has there flaws and needs to work on those to keep them in check. It is common for some1 who grew up in a violent household to become violent themself,if you know this about yourself and are willing to work on this you can minimize the impacted this has on yourself and the people around you(altough i believe it is something you have to always carry around)

i think it be fuinny

how everyone says they are just going to be the best of friends with people they have known for less than a day & how they shall have each other's back & etc.

It makes it every so more delicious when they end up finding that they cannot judge a person in 5 minutes & be 1OO% right.
