"Way Out": Showtime developing reality show about coming out
The Showtime network (the folks behind Queer as Folk and The L Word) are in the midst of developing a reality series about gay and lesbian people coming out to their friends and family. Titled Way Out, the project is in the pilot stage and is being compared to A&E's approach to addiction recovery in Intervention, mostly because it comes from that series' executive producer, Bryn Freedman. In each episode the gay or lesbian central subject would come out in a group meeting, and deal with the aftermath. Definitely an interesting topic, and one that could be very engaging if done right. Like many of us, my own coming out was gradual and piecemeal (I didn't organize a press conference or anything), so seeing someone come out to a group of friends and family at once would be interesting. If we could only keep the cameras rolling in "real" life

"The mountain has wings."
It could be interesting, but how "real"? I am reminded of the kid who came out to and confessed to having a crush on a straight friend on one of the talk shows a few years back. The friend seemed accepting enough when the cameras were rolling, but he later went out and shot the gay kid's head off. All too often, what we learn from so-called reality tv is that is that things don't really get "real" until the cameraman leaves.
I dunno...
I agree with both Addison and afhickman
If Showtime does this it will mostly come out looking like an addiction recovery and/or intervention than what actually happens in real life. Like you my coming out wasn't an all at once kind of thing. Mom, then a brother, then a sister.... and one of my nieces still hasn't figured it out..... and she's been told more than once, then the rest of the family..... A press release would have been nice and quicker.... but we don’t all have that "luxury". Logo did this, and it was "kind of" (and yes there are those words again) mundane in effect. The only people that saw it were US and those few from the "outside" world. We can only hope than someone that has actually gone through the experience has something to do with production and direction.
ugh
i hated my coming out...if i can even call it that. hm.
anyways, this sort of sounds interesting. too bad i don't get showtime. darn.
