What might Adam Lambert's "Rolling Stone" cover look like?

Nothing says "I know my music" like this classic John/Yoko cover from January 22, 1981.

So as I'm sure you've all forgotten this since Friday, let me recap: Adam Lambert is not the American Idol. He is, however, far more gregarious (and popular) with the press than the actual winner, and he was also kinda-sorta outed by Kara DioGuardi on The View on Friday.

At this point the common opinion is that Adam will be coming out as gay (officially, anyway) in this week's Rolling Stone, which begs two questions:

First, they still publish Rolling Stone?

And second ... If Idol runner-up Adam has snagged the cover for his big coming out party, what might that cover look like?

We think the incredibly savvy Lambert likely has this all under control. But just in case he's been too busy to work on it, we're wondering if he looked to some of the mag's iconic covers for inspiration...

If Adam wants to play up the "bare all" quality of the interview, this little Jennifer Aniston number from March 7, 1996 might be a nice fit. (And btw ... sweet pooper, Adam!)

Adam likes his props and wacky costumes, so maybe this 1977 Star Wars cover would be a nice fit. And doesn't Danny Gokey look almost tall next to Alison Iraheta?!

If Adam wants to get all self-referential, he could mimic this Jackass cover from  Feb 2001 to emphasize the laser-focus the media has had on his sexuality since day one.

What do you folks think? Any of these work, or another iconic cover?

LOL

I kinda like the last one best :D

do we know for sure that he's gonna be on the cover, and not just an interview inside the magazine? And do we know that he will "come out" as anything? I mean, if there is one thing that we should've learned from Adam by now is that he always surprises.

QUEERTY on Adam Lambert, Rolling Stone and 19's Control

Jun 1, 2009   - 19 Entertainment's Orchestrated Reveal of Adam Lambert's Sexuality

In every interview and TMZ ambush, Adam Lambert has played semi-coy about his sexuality. The American Idol runner up has never denied being gay, and everyone at the show knew his orientation, and the media all but confirmed where he stood after Queerty was blogging about it for the entire season. But Adam has never come out and said those two words: "I'm gay." In the next issue of Rolling Stone, however, he'll do just that. Why'd it take so long to acknowledge the obvious? Perhaps it's because American Idol's producers legally required him to stay mum.

It's no secret that Idol production company 19 Entertainment owns most every aspect of a contestant's life. That's the trade-off for competing on the show: Simon Fuller holds the deed to your soul in exchange for the chance at worldwide celebrity and riches. It also means 19 Entertainment gets to tell you what you're allowed to speak to the press about, and that includes your personal life.

Lambert's mother Leila reveals that not only has Lambert signed away his right to free speech, but so has she. "We signed a contract with Idol and unless it has been set up by them, I'm not allowed to answer," says Leila, acknowledging the deal Team Lambert struck with producers. Her statement also confirms the Rolling Stone interview where Lambert will "officially" come out is part of a packaged Idol press onslaught (because you didn't know before how music marketing worked).

Most significantly, however, is that because Lambert is instructed by 19 Entertainment on what to speak about publicly, this means Idol producers are on board not just with Lambert being openly gay, but with pushing that storyline as part of his artist profile.

Of course, they only permitted Lambert to speak about it after the show wrapped, but Rolling Stone will hit before Lambert's first album and tour does, which means they must be confident they can market a gay singer. And that, friends, is pretty remarkable.

OF NOTE

In the comments there's a lot of discussion about straight folks (particularly women) wanting to deny the significance of Adam being gay or ignore his being gay or flat out deny his being gay. Boils my blood. Why do folks come on gay or lesbian sites to tell us how "insignificant" our being gay or lesbian is. It's not for them to say. Being out and proud is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT not just to the individual but to our community as a whole. Coming out and being visible is one very important weapon in the arsenal against discrimination and homophobia and I'm SOOOOO OVER straight folks saying "I don't care if he/she is gay/lesbian" or "It's their business" or "It's private, why are you talking about their sex life"

Acknowledging that someone is gay or lesbian is not the same as talking about what they like to do in bed or who they are doing it to. It is just a descriptive fact about the person like Eye Color, Height and Ethnicity.

Being gay is not some dirty secret uber private thing that has to be protected (particularly if the person in question is completle open and not closeted.)

UGH, BLOOD BOILING!

IF folks don't want to hear about gay folks talking about being gay, why go to gay and lesbian websites?

WTF, WORD!

Love the last one

For the Rolling Stone interview I'm not really waiting to hear (or read) him say that he's gay, I'm more interested by the reason he kept it so mysterious, was it his own doing (cause he doesn't seem to care about being out or not) or was in confidentiality and all because of AI.

So yeah I'm waiting for that interview but I hope it's not gonna be a Clay Aiken-like cover (all about him being gay). My favorite side of him is his rock'N'roll side !

DON'T LIKE SUGAR, POST! ADAM PICKS BEST WAY TO BE GAY!!

Whether you like twinky boys who wear makeup  and skinny jeans or not (cuz I know the haters will circle up)  Gay visibility is where it is at!!

Images like this have just as much power to make folks feel proud as NPH and his man or TR and his man.

And a lot of younger gay guys related a lot more to Adam Lambert than to NPH.  Takes all kinds.

Two lovely young gay men going to see Guys and Dolls and carrying themselves with charm and grace and sweetness. End of.

Good for Ada.

There was also a really great San Diego news story this week about what a great role model Adam is for young men (of all stripes)

Beyond whether or not they liked his music, it sadded me so much to hear the harsh, nasty words so many gay men here, on Queerty, Towlerroad and other sites have had for Adam Lambert (who could not carry himself with less ego or sincerity under the microscope of straight homophobia and spin)

Not The Musical

They went to a gay bar in WeHo called Guys & Dolls, not the Broadway musical.

hilarious!!!

But I did hear that the cover will be of Adam, a snake, and an apple and that's it :)

Not sure if it's true or not, but that's what I heard...one can only hope!
