What was gay at "The Shmemmys"? Lots.

Hosts Neil Patrick Harris and Sarah Chalke

This weekend the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences held their annual Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards ... or, as they have been better known since Kathy Griffin vaulted them to the spotlight with her "suck it, Jesus!" acceptance speech last year, The Shmemmys. The event honors a host of behind-the-scenes talent and lower-profile categories ... although from the sounds of it, it may soon overshadow its behemoth big brother in terms of sheer character.

The awards were co-hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and Sarah "The Other Becky" Chalke ... so already this gig is one-up on the telecast, which is being hosted by an assortment of reality show mouthpieces.

Kathy Griffin gets suitably D-List on the red carpet

By all accounts the show itself was a lot of fun, as evidenced by these pics ... one of which below the break is NSFW (if you can believe that!). The crowd was full of gay and gay-fave celebs and there were some winners in our team as well:

Kathy Griffin won Outstanding Reality Series (again), and Sarah Silverman (whose own show has two central gay characters) won two awards for her "I'm F*cking Matt Damon" video, which she dedicated to now-ex boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel. Desperate Housewives' Kathryn Joosten (Karen McKlusky) picked up a second statue for guest acting, and out actress Cynthia Nixon picked up an award for her guest spot on Law & Order: SVU. AMC's Mad Men (which has a gay character) scooped up a handful of awards, and gay-inclusive South Park and The Simpsons both picked up awards in the animation categories.

The full awards will be broadast on E! on September 20th, but in the meantime, check out more pics of guests and the show after the jump!

Ira Glass, Not Just a "Fav."

He's also a fa-... out gay man.

He's actually not

He's exceedingly gay-friendly and has done tons to promote gay visibility, but he is indeed heterosexual: Read this

Ira Glass

That is funny. I always assumed he was gay too, then I read an interview with him and found out he's straight and that I had just jumped to a conclusion based on the sound of a man's voice.

I admire him and like his show a whole lot--after all, he introduced us all to David Sedaris.

No More Sedaris/Glass Slash

Wow!  I'm floored!

My assumption was based, not on his voice (more Tiny Tim than Mary 'Mo, IMO), but on a quote from This American Life.  While referencing "the chicken story" from a very early episode, he said, "that's [the story] where I, uh, came out."  In retrospect he must have meant that he came out as straight, but as an only occasional listener I clearly missed the joke.

Thanks for straightening me out!

Nope. Just as we have that

Nope. Just as we have that online-profile "phenom" of the "straight-acting" gay man, Glass is certainly that rarer bird, the "gay-acting" straight guy -- and I don't mean metrosexual! Actually, one of my best friends since college is a "gay-acting" straight guy -- he's so swish he would make Paul Lynde look butch -- and he's in musical theater, too. It confuses the hell out of everyone!

Damn Schmemmies!

For not giving Kathy Griffin two Schmemmies this year.

What's the difference

What's the difference between these and the 'regular' emmys?

These are "some awards were presented earlier" awards

a.k.a. the "less important for Prime Time Ceremony awards"  -- but I TOTALLY agree with AfterElton that the hilarious stars outshine the main Emmys.  NPH rules, and Sarah Chalke is a sweetie.

P.S. Does anyone else agree that Lee Pace is adorable and that his eyebrows deserve their own spinoff series?

Lee Pace is adorable. But I don't like his eyebrows.

Lee Pace is definitely cute

I'm addicted to him now, and thanks to him I discovered 2 great movies, The Fall and Soldier's Girl, as well as another TV show, Wonderfalls. He is cute and charming and I love his voice AND he knows how to choose a role, I just love him !

Soldier's Girl

It's good but horrifyingly based on real life events.  Worth a look, though!

The Shmemmys

AKA the Creative Arts Emmys will be broadcast on E! this Saturday evening. Having Neil Patrick Harris and Sarah Chalke as hosts should make for a much more entertaining show than the regular Emmys on Sunday - the person who decided to bring in five Reality Show hosts to emcee the big Sunday show should be looking for a new job early next week.

NPH on the Emmys

Just finished watching the creative Emmys---NPH and Sarah Chalke did a fine job; both very funny, and they worked well together. Just a pity that they weren't on-screen for a longer amount of time! (Have to admit, I just loved the bit where Neil played the dog...)

WOW, this show just zipped right by. I guess it goes to show that a pre-taped awards programme can be tightened up considerably with some judicious editing before it hits the airwaves. Hmmm, maybe it would be a good idea if ALL awards shows were to be broadcast in this manner ...

I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...
