... And who had the gay psycho killer with the vodka chaser?

Hot on the spurred heels of 3:10 to Yuma's gay-seeming brute, rumors are circulating that Eastern Promises, David Cronenberg's new thriller, also features a gay psycho killer. It's not quite clear which character in this violent London-set tale of Russian mob intrigue is the gay one, but from this review, it sounds like it might be Kirill (Vincent Cassel), the hyper-violent enforcer brother of Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen).

Gay psycho killers are of course nothing new, but it's a bit of a letdown to see this old chestnut pop back up after years of progress toward gay leads and heroic gay characters. Still, I have always found Cronenberg's work to be far more gay-inclusive than most (Crash had its lead explore bisexuality, while A History of Violence had a heroic teen character who was clearly intended to be gay, to name a few), so I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt in this case that the character's sexuality will be a fully-integrated part of his character (however deplorable that character may be).

No way am I not giving David

No way am I not giving David Cronenberg the benefit of the doubt on this one until I see it, and I will opening weekend.
