"Work Out" adds a new gay trainer, and a few others

JD Jordan

I was as surprised as anyone at how good Bravo's tricep opera Work Out got last season. The tragic and unexpected death of beloved gay trainer Doug Blasdell rocked the team of trainers and brought the beautiful friendship between Doug and straight trainer Brian Peeler to light, and Jackie seemed to make some real headway in trying to rebuild bridges with her mother, who had in the past been less than tolerant of her sexuality.

This season the trainers are back with some new additions, including a new gay trainer, JD Jordan. According to the press release for the season:

JD Jordan is tall, dark and handsome. He's been a masseur to many of Hollywood's leading artists and now wants to take his newfound passion for personal training to the next level.  He's looking to Warner to take him under her wing and show him what it takes to be a top trainer in a very competitive world.  In Jordan's personal life, he's looking for an intelligent, masculine guy and says he's sick of choosing men that need to be saved. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and too often that's what gets him in trouble.

Now before we get up in impossibly well-toned arms about the whole "masculine" thing, it's worth noting that last season arguments between Doug and Jesse Brune about gay role models and traditional masculinity brought some very interesting points to the table. Jesse's back this season as well, and no doubt having two gay trainers will again lead to more catfights stimulating conversation.

Also joining the team is (presumably straight) trainer Greg Plitt, whom you might recognize from one of those home gym commercials currently running:

Greg Plitt

I don't know what it is, but something about Greg kind of scares me a little. And it's not just that the pic makes it look like he can palm a bowling ball. And female trainers Agostina Laneri and Renessa Williams (not kidding) join the team as well.

Jackie and the gang will be back to pump (clap!) you up on April 15th.

    Hopefully this means less

Hopefully this means less camera time for the dreadfully boring Zen and the Angelina-lookalike.

    Tasty

mighty fine.... I'm confused. Is it bitch slap or slap a bitch?

    JD is tasty... :D I'm

JD is tasty... :D I'm looking forward to seeing more gay muscular drama on tv!

And Brian, there's nothing wrong with searching a masculine man... it's not a shallow or homophobic thing, it's just a matter of personal taste...

    Nope

There's nothing wrong with having personal types at all, and I didn't mean to imply that there was by mentioning it. Merely noting that given last season addressed the topic of traditional masculinity and gay men (and the ensuing discussion here), it will likely be a topic this season as well.

Brian - Thanks for the heads up about the show, which has been one of my favorites from the start. Jackie may not always be the most warm and fuzzy person in the universe, but the feminist in me found it empowering to see an out lesbian taking charge of her career, building several businesses, learning to be a boss, and trying to make it up as she goes along the way.

Being shown sexy trainers, hearing naughty talk, or getting a glimpse of Rebecca from TAR showing Jody Watley a picture of her then bf's third leg, made it a must watch show. Last season, Doug's death as well a running discussions on aging and masculinity gave the show another layer that made it more addictive for me.

I hope that all aspects of masculinity continue to be explored on the show, and particularly on this site as I think it will continue to be ripe for further dialogue for many years to come. For discussion purposes, one could argue that Jackie is traditionally "masculine" at the core due to her achievements/power-base, and/or that the new gay trainer who seeks a"masculine" guy may simply be using gay-PC language to mean "straight acting."

I am a bit weary of the word "masculine," as, irrespectively of it's definition in the dictionary, continues to be one of the most salient barometers that the world at large uses to detefine sexual orientation, and even sexual roles/proclivities within gay relationships. It's all so confusing. Here's to season 3. I just hope that Jackie's Brazilian chick is gone for good as she made me want to wretch.

That Greg guy scares me too. Something in the eyes.

    I agree

It is a complex topic, and I also think the show has handled it very well.

    Looking at Jesse's jerky

Looking at Jesse's jerky face,  I suddenly miss Doug.  Hopefully, JD can hold his own against Jesse's shrieky harpishness.

    J.D. Licious

I suddenly became interested in this season with the addition of J.D..

On the preview it shows Rebecca saying she doesn't like Jackie anymore in a scornful way.  Did anyone not see this coming?  Jackie is not smart about relationships.  Rebecca is straight and an employee, it was doomed from the start.

    oh that gives me hope....

^ I just found rebecca to be such a fake person..at least, around Jackie. her being straight was not an issue with me....but at the same time, it was an issue with me. i got this "oh, i'm doing this for a reaction...to get closer to jackie for XXXX reason" -- i just could not figure her out. it was weird for me.

... am I the only one?

At first glance, I thought it was Joey Lawrence.

Regardless, I'll be sure to watch! I'll miss Doug tho, he was incredible in many ways.

    OMG. I just realized that.

OMG. I just realized that. Now I understand why I'm attracted to him... I have a big crush on the non-skinhead Joey. I even watched Run of The House on the WB because he was on.

    "Whoahh" A Blossomy Good Call!!!

"Whoahh" A total lookalike. I could play that game until... forever. My favorites are the ones who look like two people, who don't look alike, thus leading to the conclusion that they look like the offspring of said people. What is amazing is when others totally agree. The brain works in mysterious ways. I'll give you a holler if I find a someone who looks like the offspring of Joey Lawrence and Blossom.

    I love that game!

Spice Girls Geri Halliwell & Emma Bunton look like they gave birth to S Club 7's Hannah Spearritt. Just my opinion tho. I'm also a fan of British pop music, so perhaps those names are lost on you.. haha
