"Dancing With the Stars" recaplet (Ep. 7.04): He kissed a girl
So, let me get this straight … He kissed a girl and he liked it? Wait, what? During last week’s three-night premiere event of Dancing With The Stars, Lance Bass’s ‘very-public sexual orientation’ was referenced on a few occasions. Nothing too explicit: a quick gag about his gay androgynous fan on the street, and a joke made by partner Lacey Schwimmer about now not being able to marry her boyband crush. Last night however, the pink gay elephant in the ballroom pretty much came out.Or did it? In their third dance so far this season, Lance and Lacey danced the Paso Doble to the hit song “I Kissed a Girl” in a very modern and unique way. The judges seemed to enjoy the energy of the performance, but were disappointed in the dance’s loss of authenticity and tradition. Apparently the Paso Doble is a dance style full of rules and regulations; and according to Carrie Ann, Len and Bruno, the couple broke them. One of the things that may have stood out in the judges minds as (how should I say this…) too flashy? Perhaps it was the hardcore P.D.A. the pair engaged in at the end of the routine. Yeah, Lance and Lacey basically made out: I’m not sure if you all know this, but Lance is gay. (Has that been mentioned?) So his actually kissing a girl, well, it got some laughs. Again, there were subtle nods made at Lance’s orientation, but his gayness was never explicitly mentioned out loud. It was just the clever butt-end of the joke (excuse the unintentional pun). So far we have heard all about Susan’s balancing act of both rehearsals and filming All My Children, as well as Brooke’s challenge of dancing while raising a family. However, Lance has yet to have any real video segments that explore his personal life (well, that’s if you don’t include his quasi-relationship he’s having with Lacey … is it just me or does it almost seem like they’re dating?). Yes, Katy Perry’s single has been all over the pop charts for months now and it’s not a surprise her song was selected for a dance on the show … but is it a coincidence the song went to Lance? From what I can see, they’re referring to his sexual orientation, while ironically ignoring at the same time. The results show will air tonight, Tuesday September 30th, on ABC. Predictions: Cloris or Kim go home (clearly). Submitted by on Tue, 2008-09-30 07:51. |

Lance & Lacey
i really think that Lacey is going to ruin Lance's chances of winning Dancing with the Stars. She can't seem to figure out that the judges don't like flashy, modern moves and prefer the couples to stick to the traditional dance.
Honestly, he would do much better with a different dance partner.
As for his sexuality, I think Lance is just having fun. In his book he made clear that he enjoys the company of women, he's just not sexually attracted to them.
Lacey's great, but...
she's the wildcard here. She doesn't seem to have much regard for the conventions of ballroom dancing. I'm not saying she should follow the conventions, but she needs to be better aware of them -- and know what to adhere to and what to play with for dramatic effect. In general, she just seems to be dissing convention for the sake of dissing. You know because she's so young and modern and hip.
I think we're going to see more of Lance's personal life as the show goes on. He's dancing well and coming across as a fun, passionate, and suprisingly hot competitor. I'm betting that the producers figure he'll be around for many more weeks -- and they'll go deeper with him in future episodes.
But isn't it ultimately the
But isn't it ultimately the viewers who decide? I haven't watched a single full season of "Dancing With the Stars" (just clips), but AFAIK, the judges have no power on who stays and who goes.
So even ifthe judges all rag over Lancey's modern takes on classics, they can still win if the viewers enjoy them.
Problem with the Paso Doble
Lance, Lacey and Bruno
I don't know if Bruno will hit on him but I am waiting for him to say something about Lance's tight pants....
As for Lacey I think Lance is encouraging her a bit to color outside the lines. They have great energy and if they will aim for traditional moves for the next few dances the judges might be more inclined to be more forgiving in the future.
Hopefully with all three judges coming down on them this week they will take the advice a little more to heart. I enjoy watching them and would like them to stick around until the finals.
paso doble
I know nothing about ballroom dance, but I know that the paso doble is my favorite to watch. I love the excitement, the drama, the passion, and the flair. I've never seen that translate when somebody tries to modernize it. I think it is the one dance that should always be done in the traditional style. Bruno's comments made sense to me. Even though they kept some traditional paso steps, they didn't keep up the mood and atmosphere of the paso doble in every stance.
I think "I kissed a girl" is an especially vapid song with which to attempt such a dramatic dance style. I have a feeling Lacey only chose it because she wanted to get a kiss from her childhood crush.
I can understand why the dancers, especially the celebrities, would want to mix things up a bit and make it more 'fun.' But I think there should also be some respect and apreciation for the art of ballroom dance.
Anyway, I'm still rooting for Lance and Lacey to do well, but I have to agree with the judges that I didn't like this dance.
By the way, I don't think that the show is necessarily trying to ignore the fact that Lance is gay. It's probably Lance's decision, as much as the producers' decision, how much to talk about his boyfriend. If Lance gets very far in the competition, I'd be surprised not to see his boyfriend in the audience or mentioned on stage.
Lance and Lacey
I love the new twist on the dances of these two also. BUT, the show is supposed to judged on the standards/rules of dance at this time. They have not upgraded the rules for the New Age contestants. That should be made clear at the time they offer them the chance to be on the show.
So, I feel Lance and Lacey should cut back on the rebellion and show they can dance by the rules of the show.
I don't think his/her sexual orientation should have anything to do with the competition. Have they judged anyone for the number of children they have, religion they practice, place they live, etc. ? It is none of our business. We are suppose to judge these people on their ability to dance!!
