FOX orders a new gender-bending comedy pilot called "Lalola"
Can FOX do what ABC and NBC pulled off with Ugly Betty and The Office, respectively? It's time we find out, because the network is taking a risk in adapting the Argentinian telenovela Lalola into a new series. According to Variety, Fox has picked up the gender-bending pilot about a womanizer who gets a taste of his own medicine when with two shakes of a stick he's turned from a rooster into a hen by a scorned ex. That's right, it's a new body swapping "comedy" from the network that brought us such high class shows Cops and World's Worst Car Crashes. Created by Journeyman's Kevin Falls, the show will be set in the world of sports, entertainment and fashion. Think Just One of the Guys meets All of Me and Arli$$ by way of Sex and the City. To get an idea of what the fuss is all about, here's the trailer for the original Lalola (with english subtitles) Lalola was hailed as the next Ugly Betty when it premiered in Argentina so I'm sitting here thinking how fun it would be if we could get Betty's Michael Urie and Becky Newton to play the two leads. Sure they have their own show and a little thing called a contract but how fun would that be? For those of you keeping track at home, this show is not to be confused with FX's new show from Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy called Pretty/Handsome (original title, 4 oz), which is about a husband that comes to terms with being transgender and undergoes gender reassignment surgery starring Joseph Fiennes, Carrie-Ann Moss and Blythe Danner. Lalola sounds like Switch
Does anyone else remember this early 90's film, Switch, starring Ellen Barkin and Jimmy Smits?

This sounds a lot like that
Perry King
Perry King was cast as the male version of Ellen's character. That was during the time, he still looked like a hot daddy.
Perry!
The film with Shirley McClaine as his older sister?
Yes, I do remember that film. I think that was the very first film that I saw with him in it. I believe it was on some cable channel at 2 am or something. He was absolutely beautiful in that film.
Perry King
I believe "The Possession of Joel Delaney" was his film debut (although IMDB lists"Slaughterhouse Five" as his first, I'm pretty sure POJD has "Introducing Perry King" in the opening credits). It's a pretty faithful adaptation of the book, as I recall.
He also does full-frontal in Mandingo.
LB
It does, you're right
"A Different Story"
What they said
An Argentina Switch for the 21st Century
I know. It took me awhile to remember the name, but I knew it looked very familiar to me.
Yep, it does.
In Spain
Switch
And without the painful backpedalling scene...
Watching the trailer, it
Watching the trailer, it really seems like a very fun show. The downside is that Fox is doing the remake.
Talking about Pretty Handome (4oz). If you have seen the leaked pilot on the Internet (or any gay pilots), tell to us about your opinions over the AE forums: http://www.afterelton.com/node/17786
OMG, its like watching
OMG, its like watching Switch dubbed in spanish. Argentinians have a way about themselfs that lends itsel well for funny and entertaining shows. They are right behind Brazil and Colombia when it comes to quality.
This is no Uggly Betty, though. That was a phenomenon. Eight years ago, at its time slot, traffic went dramatically down. Everybody was watching. No. 1 in every country. There is no such buzz for this one.
It would be interesting to see what format they choose and how it is adapted. For example, Ive seen adaptations of Betty La Fea that have just made me cringe. Mexicos is trash, Spains is so-so, the Phillipines...horrendous and I hear China is doing it now. So far, ABCs version is the best and closest to the original idea, even though is very different.
But maybe, because it is based in US movie, LaLola might have an easier time adapting to US sensibilities.
Go Lola! Cool shoes too...
I have no clue if the actual show is funny, but it seems like it's all over You Tube. I am going to keep a respectful distance as I can't get hooked on anything on the Internet, which is why I've missed out on those cuties who are apparently the real Nuke :-)
I am not a huge fan of most of what passes as comedy, but if the Fox version is cast well and has a writer/show-runner who is sharp and allowed do run free it might be worth checking out.
Side-bar: Did anyone check out Entertainment Weekly a few weeks ago when their two TV gurus mentioned who they've like to see nominated for Emmy's? I was surprise that find that they had zero love for Ugly Betty and possible even less for America Ferrera, who plays Betty. Maybe it's because she got an Emmy so it doubled their displeasure.... I am keeping my fingers crossed for Betty and Gio.

Actually...
The last movie Blake Edwards directed was "Son of the Pink Panther"(1993).
I kinda vaguely remember seeing "Switch" when it first came out on video-it's been a long time since I saw it. My sister's got it on DVD now-probably to scope out Jimmy Smits (that'd be my only reason.) Isn't it basically a retread of "Goodbye Charlie"?
I'm surprised that a test audience OBJECTED to a kiss between Ellen Barkin and Lorraine Bracco. Where was this thing test-screened? 'Cause most people I know would have CHEERED.
As for the series, seems like a one-joke idea. But it might also fit in the mold of "My Name Is Earl" and "Samantha Who?"-you know, the jerk who tries to reform after a major life change.
Goodbye Charlie
I'm glad someone mentioned this film.
For some reason it got me kind of hot as a young teenager. Although, just about anything that had anything to do with sex got me hot.
And the stupid theme-song has stuck with me for decades!
"Don't you know lechery / Leads you to treachery?"

"It takes a village (to make Village People)"
"Goodbye Charlie" was the first gender-bender comedy I can remember seeing. For those who have unaccountably missed it, it starts with Pat Boone morphing into Debbie Reynolds. It also stars Tony Curtis and was directed by Vincent Minnelli. I especially like the title tune, which was written by the Previns and was a hit for Bobby Darrin (see sample lyric in subject line). Ellen Burstyn and Walter Matthau were among the costars, and it was taken from a Broadway play by George Axelrod that starred Lauren Bacall in the Debbie Reynolds role. Debbie made a pretty good man, which is more than I can say for either Pat Boone or Tony Curtis, and the script had some good lines. So what's not to like?
And how about that Perry King? Who can forget him in "Andy Warhol's Bad"? He played a cheap hustler and Carrol Baker played the meanest woman in the world!
Bad
I was all ready to flame you about Perry King in Bad. I was sure it would have been Joe Dallesandro (who bears more than a passing resemblance to King and was Andy Warhol's Galatea in many of his films). Fortunately, I looked it up on IMDB first and found out that you were right.
I will have to put this on my Netflix list to watch again. It's probably been 20 years or more since I've seen it.
And I think Perry King did full-frontal in The Wild Party as well.
Thanks for the further info on Goodbye Charlie, it's been so long since I've seen it that I only remember a few scenes from the movie and the theme song.
It's good to be Bad

"It takes a village (to make Village People)"
Wouldn't Little Joe and Perry have made a fine team? The mind boggles!
Hot couple
How on earth
How on earth could I have forgotten about SWITCH? I saw that as well and its VERY much like it. See, I should talk to all of you before posting...
As for Pretty/Handsome, the shows are very very different. P/H has this really somber dark tone to it with some comedic moments thrown in but wow, it's a hardcore drama. Fan-frakkin-tastic pilot and a must see.
Lalola on YT will have english subtitles up next month
The person who hosts/posts the Lalola clips, will provide english subtitles for viewers who don't speak and/or understand Spanish.
