"So You Think You Can Dance" (Week 3) recaplet: This show's banoodles!
So You Think You Can Dance has been krumpin' its way through Season 4 for a couple weeks now so I'm incredibly pleased to finally bring a recaplet to AfterElton.com! You're probably asking yourself why it took three weeks of competition before we had a recap and the answer is simple... I've been riding Mary Murphy's Hot Tamale Train and just now had a moment to jump off and rehash the incredible performance and elimination episodes. (Ed: If "riding Mary Murphy's Hot Tamale Train" is a euphemism ... I don't want to know.) Welcome to So You Think You Can Dance (dance, dance, dance)! For those of you at home that are not SYTYCD fans, you're really missing out. If you happen to be a die-hard Dancing with the Stars fan, you're insane, and I beg of you to tune in next Wednesday night and witness the brilliance. Honestly, the kids on SYTYCD are in a completely different league and if this was Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, Ozone and Enzo would be wiping the floor with that Christy Yamaguchi chick. Sho'nuff... As for comparisons to Step It Up and Dance or America's Best Dance Crew (I adore both), they're so different that you can't really compare them. You'll find that my recaps are a little less about the technical side of dancing and a little about the snarky "oh no she didn't wear that" side of watching one of the gayest non-gay shows on television. The only dance background I have involves a grade school talent show and something I got paid for during college that we do not want to mention here. Oh wait, curses... Each season I pick a SYTYCD TV BOYFRIEND and I blog about all the dirty little things I'd like to do to those boys. It's harmless fun. That's always a little awkward when we eventually meet or one of their sisters contacts me and hooks me up with backstage passes to the tour. (Enablers!)
Season 2's choice was the incredible Travis Wall and last season it was that cutie-patootie Neil Haskell. I'm still in the market for a Season 4 boytoy so I'm open for suggestions. Right now I'm leaning towards Twitch, Mark, or choreographer Napoleon ... so many choices, so little time! Before we move onto the competition, I must say how incredibly fierce host Cat Deeley is. The glamazon dances worse than Ellen but is hands down the best reality show host in the world. She's gorgeous, funny, a fashion template and most importantly a Host Cat Deeley This week, one of my favorite guest Judges was back, Mr. Adam Shankman. The Shank is loud, out and proud up there from the Judges podium and the man brings this incredible energy, honesty and knowledge to the show. Judge Mary Murphy looked less like a Flintstones drag queen this week but still her make-up was heavy and that bedazzled dress a hot mess. The dance world lost Cyd Charisse this past week and Exec. Producer/Judge Nigel Lythgoe said some kind words about the dancing legend. For a show that is heavily watched by tweens (and me), I thought it was a nice touch and the clips they showed hopefully inspired one or two viewers to learn more about her. Now on with the show... If you want to watch each of the performances detailed below, click here to watch then on my TV Blog. First on stage this week were two of my faves, Twitch and Kherington Payne, aka Twitchington! They were looking Cell Block Chic in their orange jumpsuits and nailed their Hip-Hop routine. Twitch is one fine specimen of man, he's tall with an incredible body and those nerd glasses ... to die for. She's bright and bubbly but Miss Thang held her own up there. Courtney and Gev work it out Next up were our fictional lovebirds, Courtney Galiano and Gev Manoukian. She's this gorgeous Rachel Bilson-esque lyrical dancer and he's the awkward yet adorable breaker with the biggest crush on the girl. It's ridonk how the show keeps trying to force that storyline down our throats. Let the kids dance, leave the drama for those skanks on The Real World. Courtney's blue half-dress was crazy sexy and that ass-grabbing lift was hot business! These two are the underdogs and I kind of love that about them. Chris Jarosz and Comfort Fedoke went all Tarzan meets Mad Max for this Tyce Diorio Jazz number set oddly enough to the music of Marilyn Manson. The mashup of Manson and jazz could have been something wild, frenetic and unpredictable but these two couldn't pull it off. She's a hip-hopper and he's, well I don't know what he is other than not-so-good. I've wanted to like this pairing all season because Comfort is a character and seriously hardcore when it comes to hip-hop but they're always lacking that "Wow Factor" those British judges always yammer on about. Disco is one of the kiss of death routines on SYTYCD so when Jessica King and Will Wingfield drew that style, I thought for sure it was a set up. These two have been in the Bottom 3, dancing to stay in the competition each week and obviously the Producers were setting them up to fail. There is always something inherently cheesy when Disco is performed on the show (don't get me wrong, I love me some Disco) but this routine by Doriana Sanchez was edgier and harder than what we're typically used to. Unfortunatly, they didn't dance it hard enough and there were some major mishaps. (Like that dead-drop where she slammed onto the floor like a fish.) A rainbow of fruit flavors: Kourtni and Matt
Chelsea Traille and Thayne Jasperson (or as my friend Kath says: "Thayne, that's not a name, it's a major appliance" - Oh Pretty In Pink I love you) unfortunately pulled the Quickstep out of the hat this week. Ouch. The quickstep should be banned from this show because very few contestants have ever been able to come close to having the crazy foot-skills needed to make the dance work. Chelsea and Thayne's steps were far from quick and Phil Collins was making me a little ill so I couldn't wait for this one to end. Thankfully they had a spare Charleston in their back pocket and their wonderful personalities to get them through the number because child... Chelsie (not to be confused with Chelsea) Hightower and Mark Kanemura were hands down the couple to beat this week. He's this really goofy bird boy and she's the cute blonde girl who this week stepped it up big time and killed their Napoleon and Tabitha hip-hop routine. Mark looked damn good in a suit and made me reconsider him as a possible SYTYCD TV Boyfriend for the summer. It was a tale as old as time about the overworked husband dedicated to his job and the frustrated wife at home. It was emotional, sexy, powerful and crazy beautiful. Katee Shean and Joshua Allen were the last couple to perform this week and shockingly my second favorite. I've dogged Katee since the Vegas auditions because I truly believe her roommate should have made the cut instead but this week I had to eat crow because the girl was slammin'! Joshua is a wonderful and innocent bear of a boy that I just want to squeeze and put in my pocket, he's that adorable, and he's one of the best guys in the competition. This was the first week where she rose to his level and it made for one hell of a Samba! Here's how SYTYCD eliminations work: The couples perform on Wednesday (though its taped on Monday), America calls in and votes and Thursday night we find out who's going home. It's not rocket science but there is a catch. Until the Top 10 are revealed, America's votes only determine the Bottom 3 couples. Those 6 dancers then perform a solo routine or as we like to call it "dancing for their lives" and the Judges pick one guy and one girl to go home. Last night was the results show and to fill the hour we were treated to a Mia Michaels-choreographed Tim Burton meets Lion King by way of A Clockwork Orange group number that was simply wonderful. She's the high priestess of fierceness and one of the best things SYTYCD has going for it. If you're not familiar with her I can sum it up for you ... She coined the word "banoodles" (which if Gwen Stefani doesn't make into a song I'll be incredibly sad) and has been known to scream out "Don't be such a needy dancer" during rehearsals. Mia is not messing around and I love her! After that it was judgement time. Cat slowly revealed the Bottom 3 couples and for the first two I was right there with you America but that third one had me damn near breaking vases in my livingroom. The Bottom 3: Chelsea and Thayne, Chris and Comfort, The solos are always great because you sometimes forget what style of dance each contestant has a background in because week after week they're forced to tackle a different genre. It's also one last chance to predict who the Judges will send home. I walked away from the solos positive that Chris and Kourtni were going home and that killed me because until her solo I thought for sure Kourtni was safe.
In the end, as predicted we lost Chris but then the Judges threw me a curveball and sent the Tina Turner lookin' Chelsea Traille home as well! If you're a geek like me, you instantly Twittered about the crime against humanity that just occurred and raged in message boards until the wee hours of the morning. I have to keep telling myself that it's too early to get worked up about losing one of my favorite dancers, then I smash another vase and all is well in the world again. If you're interested in knowing everything there is to know about So You Think You Can Dance, check out my TV Blog coverage which includes a weekly podcast, video highlights, tour diaries and the SYTYCD episode music guide. And I'll be back here next Friday for another recap! (currently having some technical issues on my blog so bear with me) Submitted by on Fri, 2008-06-27 10:52. |

Mark!
Thanks Dan!
I love the show, and hate that some of AE take a bad view of it because of some of Nigel's "masculine" comments, which at times may actually be justified, if unpleasant.
Thanks for bringing recaplets to AE - my only gripe is that I don't want to share my SYTYCD season 2 boyfriend, Travis with anyone!
Cool
I'm so glad that AE is recapping this show. I've just started to watch this season. I haven't watched dance shows in years. Was a huge fan of Solid Gold, Dance Fever and Soul Train, when I was a child. I blame it on Step It Up & Dance and Cody Green being such an amazing dancer, that I've discovered the joy of dance again. I also, *heart* Joshua and Katee. I think they're an amazing team and she's proven herself to be a credible dancer. They both make each look great on the stage and he IS a "wonderful and innocent bear of a boy". I just love watching them perform.
I agree that Jessica and Will should have been in the bottom three, with Jessica and Chris being sent home. Well, maybe next week will be the end for Jessica.
Love me less, but love me a long time - Les Chansons D'Amour
Love SYTYCD
Thank you Dan for the recap! I've been waiting for someone at AE to start recapping one of my favorite summer guilty pleasures! :) And you sure do have the same taste of SYTYCD boyfriends as I do. LoL :P
This season is harder for me to choose because all the guys are great this season, for varying different reasons. But for me, it's come down between Twitch, Mark, or Joshua (with guilty pleasures in Matt, Thayne and Gev).

Thanks so much for recapping the week of SYTYCD. I was hoping afterelton would be covering the show. My favorites are Twichington, Katee and Joshua, Will, and Mark and Chelsie. I didn't like Mark and Chelsie at first, but with three weeks of amazing perfomances they are my top couple. I didn't like Twitchington this week. It really didn't do anything for me. Katee and Joshua surprised me this week. Their samba blew me away. They had such great technique, chemistry, and sexiness.
Season 4 BF - Twitch? Seriously? I just don't see it. Mark is already my BF of the season. I suppose we could share. lol
Check out Mark's youtube channel for more dances: mKIK808
Thanks Dan for recapping one of my favorite reality shows.
Pound for pound certainly these kids are much more talented than the American Idols contestants. Mark surprises me week after week that how talented he is. I was putting Will and Twitch as the one to watch in the begining. Now I'm watching Mark and Joshua as well. 3 weeks in the roll the couples Mark and Chelsea, Joshua and Katie were stepping up. Both Will and Twitch are certainly strong competitors on their own. Can't wait til the top 10 where they begin to switch partners. A tell tale sign of who is a better dancer.
P'S I 'm writing this before I watch the result show.
FSC (frightened straight choreographer)
Scratch Napoleon from your pretend boyfriend list after his gay panic attack when he got behind Mark in rehearsals and felt the need to proclaim that "he shouldn't be doing this so close to a guy". For fracks sake - how does he survive in the dance world if he's so afraid of catching the gay?
This week in fuck/marry/kill I'm going Will/Mark/Nigel
So You Think You Can Dance? Best of class. Bar none.
Stumbling into it last summer was like seeing Chicago on stage for the first time, as this show makes dancing seem as vital as breathing. The contestants are true athletes showcased in an open arena and are challenged in ways that gave me a new appreciation for the genre and the execution of what a reality competition can be like when executed well. Even the results show is genius as there is always a great group dance routine, and I love that the jugdgeeeees (why does Cat not say the word "judges" with the audience anymore? So cute!) take America's votes into consideration, but shows the dancers strutting their stuff to give the show actual value added rather than having a full hour of filler. It also prevents the audience from taking full ownership of the show as that can lead to some great talent leaving if they were unable to connect with the audience early on.
The only thing I generally fast-forward through the musical number as it can usually leave it. But that is coupled with seeing certain routines over and over again. I thought that 6 out of the 8 performances were awesome and was hoping that they would clean house with the two dancers who wound up going home. Boring Chris got to stay an extra week when the judges missed the ball for the first time this year. Matt's solo was AMAZING and I knew that your girl Kourt would stay as she gave a quiet power house performance that the judges like.
At least we'll finally get a new couple as Comfort and Thayne may actually benefit from a shake-up. I agree with you about disco and the quickstep being the kiss of death, with the latter needing to be banished from the show but thought that Jessica and Will did as decent a job. I am not sure that I'd agree about Jessica and Will being set-up to fail as Miss Debbie Allen would knock Nigel's long Chicklets all the way back to England if he took out her protogee before his time. I think that he's amazing.
The boyfriend picking keeps growing for me after initially not seing anyone who could replace Neil, Kam, Dom, but each week these guys show the personality element that gets me every time. All but Thayne have something really appealing to me.
Dan, I'll going directly to your site to check-out all the goodies as I love this show. You are forgiven for liking Bravo's trainwreck dance show. With regard to MTV's America's Best Dance Crew, I liked it a great deal, but since I've grown to dislike Mario Lopez and no more Jabbas I am skipping it ....More So You Think You Can Dance. I heart Cat 4ever...
Irrelevant side-bar: How surprising (to me at least) is it that Adam Shankman has worked with Adam Sandler and continues to do so? As long as it keeps Shankman employed and able to do other stuff, maybe it just shows that even a gay choreographer can direct/execute those annoying middle of the road projects that America loves. Versatile.....

LOVE
this show and so glad to see it getting the recap on AE, although I think you need to put the PC gun away when talking about Nigel and his remarks. The truth of the matter is that certain dances require a hardness and that others require a softness. That's not homophobic...it's the truth. With someone like Chris trying to dance hard to a Marilyn Manson song (and the previous week with Krump) it just doesn't work because he's too soft and feminine in his movements (which is appropriate for contemporary dance). So let's put the comments in context shall we? On to the show!
I was not surprised with Chris being sent home and wasn't that surprised by Chelsea either, although I think she should've been allowed to stay another week. There was no way they were going to pick Kourtni b/c they believe she's a strong dancer (rightly so) and she shouldn't have even been in the bottom 3 to begin with. But the reason, friend, that Kourtni and Matt were in the bottom 3 to begin with is because the audience didn't get their number. Nigel was so right on when he said that most of the voting audience would be confused by this different contemporary number b/c we're used to seeing Mia Michaels romantic/break-up pieces. I don't think that most people got the awesomeness of the routine and the outfits didn't help either b/c you couldn't see the amazing power of their body movements. I also think that hip-hop is more popular in terms of voting because it's a style that the average viewer relates to b/c that's the music of the moment. So even if it's done only reasonabley well, Twitch and Payne, they're going to respond w/ votes (plus Twitch is a favorite...a lot of us know him from last year when he lost a position on the show to Hawk...we remember him and root for him). I think Jessica is a weaker dancer than Chelsea but she's not going to be in the bottom three for awhile as long as she's paired with Will, who is an amazing dancer and is given more kudos b/c he seemingly carries her in every number. So that would leave a choice between Comfort and Chelsea. Let's get real here. Comfort is the only female in her style and I think the judges might feel that there's room for some of the more contemporary/jazz/ballroom ladies to go home rather than the only female hip-hopper they've got. Is that right? Don't know. But I can see the reasoning.
I personally would've rather have seen Thayne go home than Chris but I don't like Thayne on a personal level so I recognize the bias. Plus I just thought that Chris was a really beautiful dancer and didn't get to highlight that in the show. His partnership with Comfort was awkward at best and he's just not comfortable going into the harder dances. When he just "can't" grab his crotch on television even though it's a part of the style of the dance, there's problems.
My favorites of the night were Mark and Chelsie (the best of the evening IMO) and Katee and Josh. I think in the overall scheme of things, Josh and Kate are the team to beat. Josh has shown that he's a versatile dancer (although don't buy that he's only a popper...anyone who saw his audition knows that he got called out by Debbie Allen b/c he did a movement that is definitely not something a popper would do...very ballet). Kate has also shown that she's a great dancer and she and Josh have great chemistry together. I think the audience have forgiven her for her little slip-up about not coming back if she didn't make it, although I didn't see the big deal anyway. These people were fucking exhausted and it was down to her and her best friend and she's tried before. She was probably out of her mind @ that point. I think Mark and Chelsie have come out swinging as the surprise couple and I just love them. Mark is so versatile and Chelsie is just a great dancer. They make a great couple and, if they remain together, I think Mark's quirkiness tempers Chelsie's steel enough that they could make a run @ the finals.
Anyway, glad to see that the show is being featured. I don't think we need to get into this silliness of comparing all these dance shows to one another. ABDC is a show about groups, not individual dancers, and they're judged as a group. Even though the SYTYCD has couples, the judges obviously look @ them as individuals. And Bravo's stab @ the dance competition genre was a bit too high on the camp and attitude and not high enough on the dancing. I love that this show really just seeks to highlight them for what they're competing for...best dancers...and not so much on the drama off the stage and the animosity directed at other competitors just to get your face on television. SYTYCD truly is a dance competition. And that's what makes it awesome!
