"So You Think You Can Dance" (Week 8) recaplet: Grillz, thrills and a harsh breakup
I have to apologize for missing last week's recaplet because I was in San Diego for Comic-Con and watching So You Think You Can Dance was the last thing on my mind. Actually that's been happening a lot this season; is it just me or is Season 4 just not as exciting as the previous seasons? Don't get me wrong, I still love the show and I get as excited as the next guy to see all the shirtless wonders prancing around the stage, but something's off and I can't put my finger on it. This week the Top 6 performed which means that next week is the finale and that's both exciting and kind of depressing. Fox blew through the season this year (I'm assuming that the Olympics are to blame) so I have mixed emotions about crowning America's next favorite dancer this soon. On one hand I'm glad it's over because it's been kind of lackluster but on the other hand, I'll be sad to see Cat Deeley and all of the mad talent disappear from my screen for another year. Are you feeling the same way? Ponder that and get back to me kids... So on to the show! Cat Deeley's is as usual a stunning goddess but this week she's got some wacky pink flower blooms flying from the back of her stilettos and for the first time all season I question something the woman's wearing. I may need Clinton and Stacy from What Not To Wear to weigh in on this one. My BF Mark and Cutie Courtney get all hot and bothered First Routine: Viennese Waltz by Jason Gilkison While I'm sure there were some technical missteps, I have to say that I absoloved their waltz. There was grace and elegance, some incredible passion and how adorable are these two? You know I'm stoked to have my Marky Mark still in the competition even if that meant losing Judges' favorite Will last week. It's called personality, Will. Get some. Second Routine: Jazz by Sonya Tayeh When I think of network television dance shows, I always think about old French burlesque, don't you? Sonya Tayeh finally put some sexpot punk sensibility into a family show and I couldn't be happier! I applaud and bow to her Jane Child-ishness. It was not so much old school burlesque as it was hooker vigilante justice ... which is fan-frakkin-tastic! Someone put Courtney in the remake of Angel because she's a dead ringer. Lastly, I'd like to point out that when Mark took her from behind and gave a wicked smirk to the camera, we had a moment. Katee and Joshua: reunited and it feels so good! First Routine: Contemporary by Tyce Diorio It was the return of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (aka Joshua and Katee) as these former partners reunited and defied all laws of physics. There's only one word to describe the jumps and lifts performed by these two and that word is ... banoodles! Katee did a flying split and he caught her mid-air with straight arms; he's like Hercules up there! I seriously wish they'd quit showing off already! Second Routine: Paso Doble by Jason Gilkison The paso doble from earlier this season was disappointing to say the least but this one was crazy hot intense. I couldn't tell which one was supposed to be the bull because both were storming and stomping about that stage with such power that it was like watching two pigs in a fetish film. Who's zoomin' who? Sex sells a paso doble but no one tops what my Season 2 boyfriend Travis Wall and Cousin Heidi gave us ... that was hot business! Did Chelsie and Twitch just orchestrate their departure this week? First Routine: Mambo by Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin Mambo, Salsa, Tomato, Tomahto ... I can't tell the difference. Twitch is one of my main men but that International Male lace doily of a shirt was hideous, can I get an "Amen"? Chelsie's outfit was smokin' hot but her shoes were obviously paternal twins with Cat's pink poofs which is both adorable and abysmal at the same time. Notice I've got nothing to say about the routine. Chelsie and Cat are shoe twins Second Routine: Hip-Hop by Tabitha and Napoleon Once again I'm left speechless by Chelsie and Twitch. They're just not doing it for me this week and I have a feeling it's time for someone to tell NappyTabs that their hip-hop-lite shtick is wearing thin. The routine sucked but thankfully I got some joy from the music. The Vitamin String Quartet doing an orchestral version of Janet Jackson's "Control" was shear brilliance. (I have a couple of their cover albums and oddly they're quite soothing; I highly recommend.) Based on this performance alone, I'd say these two deserve to go home this week but will I be right? Thursday's Results Show: The opening number was choreographed by my girl Mandy Moore and it featured my boy Marky Mark! Plus it had Bette Midler's "The Rose" as the music so I was taking this as a sign that My BF Mark and I would have another week together and he'd be working his quirky mojo in the finale. I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best.
Cat comes out and the wind machine for the opening number was still blowing so she decided to do a little sexy hair dance! I'm telling you, this girl was robbed of an Emmy nomination. You wouldn't see Seacrest out there shaking his bonbon just for the hell of it.
Chelsie Hightower and my boy Mark Kanemura were eliminated which means not only are we suddenly broken up, but this is the first time one of my SYTYCD Boyfriends didn't make it to the finale. I don't know how I feel about that one. Thankfully he'll be on the SYTYCD Tour this fall so I still have a chance to reconnect with my apparent TV Ex. Tickets go on sale Saturday, August 2nd so get yours this weekend! Are you happy with the Final 4? What did you think of Cat putting Twitch's grillz in her mouth? Are you over NappyTabs? Are you ready for the finale? Speak up in the comments section and we'll see you next week! Submitted by on Fri, 2008-08-01 10:26. |

Joshua has really grown on me--stealth candidate to win?
Future epitaph: "It seemed like a good idea at the time."
I honestly thought Chelsea would be in the finals, and take it; with her gone, I think Katee is just a little bit stronger than Courtney. Joshua definitely seems stronger than Twitch (and with the braces off--helllooooooo, studboy!). I definitely think Katee and Joshua are the top 2, but not sure which will win.
I agree, Cat was ROBBED of an Emmy nod--best reality show host, hands down.
Super Twitch
Twitch is still my favorite and most improved dancer on the show. And for all you that agree, buy a t-shirt of his superman-like logo, so hot. http://popshirts.spreadshirt.com
Katee is also a good candidate for the winner, but her solos look all the same, and Twitch has got so much more entertainment value. Go T!
Dan, another home-run on the SYTYCD recaps
I was also wowed by 4 out of the 6 dances as the choreography, energy, talent, and zest made it to me the best showing of the season. Given how Courtney and Mark were beyond perfect, I was pretty sure that Twitch and (legs for days) Chelsie would go home. I am glad that Courtney's spunk/cuteness/determination got her a nod to the final. No one shakes it like Chelsie and I enjoy her dancing, but her last number with Twitch did nothing for me and she shines but does not seem to have that relatability that makes me want to cheer for her: Go Courtney! Twitch is the anti-Chelsie and I assume that his amazing personality (combining heat and charm) connected with more viewers, who overlooked his samba and what I think was Mark's best showing to date.
He was the epitome of renaissance as he was a dashing leading man in the first number, and what can I say about his second number? It was so him and (for real) Jane Child (I am listening to her as I write this) has arrived. That dance better be nominated next year and Mandy Moore should start packing her bags as I was again underwhelmed by her opening number.
My take: Mark WUZZZ robbed, as (crushes aside) he has also arrived, but may have been a little too left of center PG-13 scary/sexy to overcome Twitch's smile. But the cliche is true as they are all winners and I can see Mark's uniqueness and versatility has star written all over it. Think of him as the lead in a Sonya show?
I think that The Shank rocks and should always be on the show. I have a feeling the the toothy one would have none of that. Even with the fun disagreements with judges over who should have gone before some one else, I am amazed that the audience and the judges made sure that their final 6 were all deserving. With the exception of Twitch, it's any one's game and I will be happy to see Katee, Courtney, or Joshua win some money and get a role in a Shank-produced show.
Not so bold prediction: I have a feeling that while girls are rarely winners when it comes to generating votes from female fans, Katee's amazing talent/technique/chameleon transformation on stage, and lack of "threat" to female voters will give her the slightest of edge to win over Joshua, her amazing partner. Any predictions folks?
P.S. I have to come out to all who made mark their bf this season, by saying that I feel the weight of Mark's loss as I've watched the show the day after it airs, so I did not vote once this season and Mark did not get the love I gave Neil last season.

SYTYCD fans, do you think that maybe....
Assuming that I am on to something, it's a little ironic as the show has been giving possibly a little to much love to the choreographers even when their stuff sucks. The upside is that it may encourage new faces to step it up.
Speaking of irony/coincidence... Did anyone else smile as Janet Jackson's Control was playing with Paula Adbul in the audience? If I remember correctly, Paula choreographed and appeared in the Control video shortly before she started outshining Janet for a decent moment in time.
I'd love to see footage of Tyce (who needs a little humble pie in his diet) and Adam in the Oscar telecast that Paula choreographed so long ago. And let's talk about Paula? Sassy short hair and looked sane. It was also funny to see Mary Murphy doing her crazy shtick as to the common eye she would seem loonier than Paula, but....

Joshua's lack of training.
Thanks for the recap Dan! For a moment i thought you quit on us.
I agree most of what you have written. Adam Shankman is definitely one of the better judges. The energy he brought certainly add the excitement to the show. No question about it. Cat deserve an Emmy. Ryan Seacrest is not even in the same league. Perhaps I have a short term memory. I love this year show more than past years. I think there are more talents in the top ten these year compare to the past. Perhaps the choreography of some of the dances are a bit more predictable than previous years. For sure the show is hurting without Wade Robson and Shane Sparks. I was glad Will was voted off the show 2 weeks ago. Base on technical skill alone he is one of the best . However, I believe many voters were turn off by the judges favoritism towards Will. I hope Nigel learn his lesson. I was just as surprise when Chelsie was voted off last night. She certainly deserve to be in the top 4 . I was expecting Twitch to be voted off instead of Mark. Base on solo dancing among the guys, I enjoy Twitch more than Joshua and Mark but he is less adaptable in partnering dances. Now Katee is the most technical dancer of the four and Joshua is the dark horse to win. Either one I would be happy.
Cat for the win!
This is my first time without a boyfriend in the final too, but since I jinxed both Travis and Danny into the runner-up position I never thought Mark was going to win (plus he's far too quirky).
Chelsie Hightower (love that name) was the closest I had to a favorite girl this season, but since Natalie and Sara didn't make the final in their seasons I'm used to that.
I've never warmed to Katee or Joshua and since one of them seem predestined to win I'm seriously disinterested in the finale.
Although I'll watch for my last chance to see Cat for the year - man, I love her.
Life After SYTYCD
I am putting the finishes on a what are they up to right now
Are you reading my mind? I started my piece as I was thinking that same thing as you. I know that they always want to focus on maximizing the exposure of the current flock, but it's a no-brainer special in and of itself and at the very least would be nice to for the fans to get little tidbits during the final as it further legitimizes the show and the whole dance brotherhood vibe that I think Nigel has been good at fomenting.
The current dancers are legally committed to the show for the remainder of the year after their respective season ends so they are not able to talk about anything that is not SYTYCD-related as it's all about that tour. The downside of the great upside.
I can tell you that Neil, my SYTYCD bf from last season, is currently playing a lead character named Luke (how appropriate given that I think he's a dead ringer for Van Hansis from ATWT) in the off-Broadway musical Altar Boyz got his Equity Card as part of the cast for MTV's first stab at a musical in something premiering this month titled American Mall.
Not to tease, but I'll link what others (including Sabra and Danny) are up to in the next couple of days.
