Advocate's 40 years, 40 heroes

The next issue of The Advocate celebrates the publication's 40 year history with a cover story in which the mag ranks 40 gay and lesbian icons. Its called "40 Years, 40 Heroes," and we won't spoil the surprise here by telling you who ranks number one. But if you really want to know, after the break we'll offer you two clues.

At any rate, it's a great piece though and we're glad to see included in this list of icons the likes of Pedro Zamora, Mark Bingham, Sir Ian McKellen, and Armistead Maupin.

Interesting to compare the 40 heroes selected by The Advocate to the 31 GLBT icons selected for "National GLBT History Month." The Advocate seems to have picked individuals who may be less well known outside of the gay community (Tony Gill, Randy Shilts, Bayard Rustin) but who are incontrovertibly gay or lesbian.

The issue hits stands soon, or check out after the jump for a few hints about who took the top spot.

1. You might be able to tell by relative size of heads on cover photo.

2. Our sister site will be very pleased!

    40 Heroes

Barney Frank is number one?  That would make sense since he's the most powerful gay person elected to office.

Snaps for Ellen.  I watched the E! True Hollywood Story about her yesterday.  She has overcome many obstacles in her life.  Ellen truly deserves the title of hero.

A lot of great people I see.  One thing I have a problem with is the picture of Rosie.  They selected one from her first day on The View and it's not the best one they could have used.  They did pick beautiful pictures of Martina Navratilova, Bayard Rustin, Greg Louganis, John Ameachi, Ellen Degeneres, Matthew Shepard and Melissa Etheridge.

    Can't wait

to read this issue of the Advocate.  Pedro Zamora is certainly one person I admire tremendously.  He did not have to go out on the road and try to educate young people about safer sex.  Tragically it may have resulted in his premature death.  If he had lived another 15 months or so he would have been able to start taking the protease inhibitors that saved so many lives (despite their side effects).  I believe I started taking them in 1996, had to stop because they were difficult to take and had irritating side effects, the drugs today are so much better (thank heavens)!

Matthew Shepard tragically is on this list as a reminder to all GLBT people the virulent homophobia that some twisted people still have.  His death I believe increased in the straight community the realization of how wrong homophobia is and to what sick violence it can lead to (everytime I read about his death I think about what he must have gone through at the end and shudder).

I agree with Evan that Ellen is a tremendous role model, funny, confident and very comfortable with who she is.  Martina Navratilova is also a great role model.  Now we need some GAY MALE pro athletes to burst down the closet (or should I say locker) door!

    Cheers
