Chris Crocker takes on Fox News Friday, Lyle posted on mainstream reporting of the Chris Crocker “Leave Britney Alone” video. Lyle pointed out that ABC’s decision to include in their report a violence-inciting anti-gay slur was potentially irresponsible. No surprise, but ABC’s coverage was far better than what was offered up over on Fox — Fox chose to play the first 10 seconds of the clip and then, muting the audio, spent the remainder of the segment tittering over whether Crocker was a man or a woman.
…and on they go.
Something about seeing these Fox talking heads so clearly having a laugh at the way Crocker looks made me suddenly feel protective of the kid. They essentially dismiss Crocker as a crackpot. Which, okay, might in fact be true — but what really gets under my skin is how the Fox “reporting team” seemed to base that conclusion on Crocker’s appearance. He’s a guy wearing makeup, therefore he must be a loon. Crocker took the same point and responds to Fox in the video after the break. What Does Chris Want?
I don't know what to think of Chris Crocker. Is he a leader for effeminate gay men and those that blur the gender line? Or is he exploiting gay stereotypes for his own gain? I can't figure out where he stands on those two questions. He clearly is comfortable with at least portraying an effeminate gay man and all the things associated with effeminate gay men. On the other hand when he was on the Jimmy Kimmel show he said he did not want Jimmy to put words in his mouth but wanted something else in his mouth. That plays into the stereotype gay men are always thinking about sex and about straight men. The top gay youtubers are effeminate. Is he trying to tap into the public's appetite to laugh at effeminate gay men? I don't know.
His lastest video about Fox "News" is pure genius. From the camera angle to the clothes and make up to telling off Fox "News" and those that watch it. The last 55 seconds are the best in my opinion. You can tell he is real in this video.
When Chris is not in make up he looks like a young Andy Warhol with better skin. Here is a picture of Andy Warhol in drag. Chris' drag appearance looks like an updated version of Andy's.
I agree with what Chris says about Fox News
But I'm not sure about the way he's saying it. I agree with the last minute or so of of the second video and his criticism of Fox News, but like Evan says what is his statement, his whole statement? Why are only effeminate males given the spotlight with regard to gay issues. We need to form a gay jock group that speaks out and shows the world that not every gay boy in America is 98 pounds, wears make up and talks with a lisp. Again, not that that is bad, but it just reinforces the stereotype.

get the spotlight partially for entertainment value (a lot of people like to laugh at those they consider "freaks" because it makes them feel better about themselves, not a very attractive quality but humans can be pretty reprehensible at times) and partially because they have never had anything to lose by being visible. They have been teased and taunted about being gay from an early age, so I suspect they come out earlier, and thus they are often at the forefront of gay visibility on the net, on TV etc.. I also find that a lot of effeminate men have an aggressive "f**k you" attitude towards straight society, perhaps in reaction to their treatment growing up.
Gay jocks on the other hand are at the opposite extreme. Society cannot get its' head around homosexuality and athletic prowess, the stereotype is weak, uncoordinated, afraid of physical contact, and wimpy. Therefore, gays that excel at sports can hide among straights very well. They do not see much advantage about coming out early, especially if they see a big $ payoff as a pro athlete. Justin all the power to you if you can organize a gay jocks group that is willing to be visible and out, I suspect though it could be a challenge!

Not Worried Anymore
When I first saw Chris's video in response to Brit Brit's antics, I was worried for his mental health. After watching this video, I'm very glad that I no longer worry about this young man, because he's got a clear head side to himself and obviously is strong enough to take care of himself. For all that effeminate men do not make up the entire portrait of the homosexual "experience" I'm not ashamed to be at all associated with this young man (and I don't want to imply that anyone here is).
One of the reasons that the media focuses so much on effeminate gays is because it preserves the element of "other" that homosexuality has about it. If all kinds of gays were portrayed, athletic ones, nerd ones, manly ones, insert alternate stereotype here ones etc... then we'd be just like them! Them of course being the imaginary hetero-normative audience that the media seeks to placate so as to take their money. And God forbid that America discovers homosexuals are just like everyone else.
PS: If Justin wants to make a gay jock group I have only one request, in the form of one word. Calenders.
