News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Ja Rule's homo for the holidays

Earlier this month, hip hop artist Ja Rule made some disturbing comments about gay content in television and how that is what is "f***ing up America." The comments were made in an online interview with Complex magazine. I guess the rapper felt the need to put a more benevelont spin on his recent gay-baiting so he did so (or attempted to) in an interview with Spinner.

When asked if he was homophobic, Ja Rule says his earlier comments were taken out of context.

"My statement was more about where our mind state is as a people. We're focused on the wrong things — like, our country is at war right now. These things are more of a problem to me."

When asked about gay marriage...

"It's really not my business. I really could care less. It's not something that bothers me."

Finally, the interviewer asked the rapper how he'd react if one of his kids came out to him. (Presumably, after watching gays on the telly — which had him so hot and bothered in the earlier interview.)

"That's their own preference. I'm going to love them regardless. I have relatives that are homosexuals and, you know, they come over for Christmas, hang out."

Yes, but are their stockings hung on the chimney with care? It doesn't sound like a merry time is had by all. I'm struck by Ja Rule's use of the word "preference." I kind of wish he'd ask his "homosexual relatives" whether they think their sexual orientation is simply a matter of choice.

ugh, man...

"My statement was more about where our mind state is as a people. We're focused on the wrong things..."

uhhh, so is he saying we're focused on the gay right movement or something? cuz um...i don't think the majority of America really gives a hang about gays rights, etc...(i may be wrong)

i only assume he means "as a people" in terms of America in general.

another thiiiing - - did he not watch the news coverage of when paris hilton went to jail? seriously, did he not? that's all i gotta say. i'm out

Hold up now!

I am no fan of Ja Rule. However, this interview sounds a lot like "straight-baiting". I'd bet almost any straight African-American male would either give the same exact answers as Ja Rule did or even worse.

We shouldn't be so quick to bash and villify someone just because they are not being gay political correct and are just speaking on their personals beliefs (even if they are severely misinformed).

Ja Rule knows who his core audience is and that clearly is not gay males. Therefore he has no reason to tote the "I'm cool with the gays" conga line.

I wish the interviewer had tried to compare our struggle with something that Ja Rule could relate to instead trying to bait him into making homophobic comments that could offend his gay fans.

I guess Ja Rule hates blow jobs, that's so gay.  Who cares in five years he'll be the new M.C. Hammer.

Goodness......

The guy gave an interview, made his opinions known and people are trying to twist his words for him. if he hates gays or whatever, thats is preference and if he loves them but doesnt wanna talk about it, oh well. God people, let people be who they wanna be.

If Ja Rule

was just an average joe I would not react to his homophobic opinions, unfortunately he is not "average", he is a music icon (god knows why it is not because of musical talent) for young people, so anything he says can influence others opinions of gays.

The GLBT community has not progressed this far by letting influential homophobes off the hook when they say stupid things.  He backtracked on the second interview which shows some contrition I guess.  Maybe next time he will actually think about what he is saying and give some intelligent, informed opinions (he is right the USA is focussed on the wrong things, but gay rights is not one of them).

Cheers
