Patti LaBelle stops show over rude fan

One of Patti LaBelle’s trademark bits in concert is to kick up her leg and flip a high heel shoe straight up into the air. Recently, she flipped more than her shoe. It looks like she flipped her wig over a somewhat unfunny comment made by a fan she’d invited onstage to dance with her. She joked that he was dancing too close and the fan (who some commenters have presumed is gay) shot back, “I think you wanted it more than I did.” Decide for yourself whether she overreacted. (I don’t think she did, myself. His comment presumed that Labelle was sexually interested in him and that’s more than a little insulting.)

Here’s a partial transcript, and you can catch the full video of LaBelle's blow up after the break.

Patti: (Joking to audience) You know he was dancing too close to me.
Fan: I think you wanted it more than I did.

At this point Patti motions for the music to stop and backs up the truck, so to speak.

Patti: What did you just say?
Fan: You heard me
Patti: You leave (points back to audience). No, you leave because you’re rude. You’re very freakin’ rude! Okay? I don’t play that.
Fan: (sheepishly) Okay.
Patti: No this is not okay. I don’t play that, okay? Do you know who I am?
Fan: I know who you are.
Patti: Who am I?
Fan: Patti LaBelle
Patti: And what does that mean to you? Nothing? You disrespect a black woman like that in front of people like this? How dare you! How dare you! (Grabs his microphone out of his hand) Gimme the mic. Now go to your seat. Just go.

The fan leaves the stage.

Patti: ‘I want it more than you?’ What does that mean?

Patti goes on to talk with the audience about it and decides that maybe the fan didn’t mean to be so hurtful. Take a look at the vid and tell us what you think. LaBelle overreacting, or rightly incensed?

    LOL

    I loved those commercials.

    I think she misinterpreted him.

    I think that she overreacted.

I could have made that sort of comment as a joke. Maybe not spin it that way but I believe he was not being rude. Moreover, after she talked to him at first he did not more closer to her while dancing. Was he supposed to step back and then dance?

    Well...

At least she didn't taser him.

...when I was a young lad working at Disney World, Anne Murray filmed a Christmas special there for Candian television; one night, after the park had closed, she filmed on a stage in front of Cinderella's Castle in the Magic Kingdom.  Anne's guest that evening was Patti LaBelle.

So a whole bunch of us are huddled before the stage and between the filming of the songs, Patti would chat with the audience; a big black man started yelling, "I do you in my show! I do you in my show!"

Patti looks over her shoulder and says to Anne, "Do you hear that? He does me in his show!" Anne just nodded and smiled, possibly realising that not very many black drag queens perform "You Needed Me" or "Snowbird"--which makes me wonder if they are any Canadian drag queens who perform Anne Murray...?

Anyway, Patti was quite generous to the big black man, giving him a pair of her own false eyelashes and other accoutrements. She's a diva, she's very emotional, sometimes generous, sometimes not, I guess.

    She waaaay over-reacted

Just because someone "feels" something doesn't make it true. Reality has to factor in there somewhere.

It was CLEARLY a joke, and in keeping with the whole faux-sexing on-stage dancing.

I mean, obviously Patti misinterpreted the comment. But it wasn't meant how she interpreted it, which matters.

I think she was just ticked ...

... that he got a bigger laugh then she did.

If she's really worried about somebody saying somthing, then simple:  DON'T GIVE THEM A MICROPHONE!

    He was a rude jerk

He was rude to her. As she told him, she's not Lil Kim.

I think we see a generation gap here. Her playing off that he got too close was not flirtatious banter but her way of expressing her discomfort. That how it's done classy and 'old skool' like she is and his comment was disrespectful, egotistical and base. He might have a suit on but he has no manners. Thank hip-hop and the baby-mamma culture for this.

You just don't talk like that to a 63 yr old woman.

What does "BLACK" have to do with it???

That man meant no harm and was just excited about being on stage with a celeb!!!!   Patti was a total jerk!!!!!    QUOTE....... "You disrespect a black woman like that in front of people like this?"     Huhhh???    Excuse me??????

Who are "PEOPLE LIKE THIS"?????!!!!    Common folk???   WHITEY, perhaps????    Is that like saying "YOU PEOPLE"????

If a white person said something like that in reverse, it would be a National incident!!!!   Rev. Al Sharpass would have to be called in to make a bigger ass of himself (and YOU PEOPLE)!!!!

You know what...... stop disrespecting us WHITE PEOPLE in front of "YOU PEOPLE"!!!!!
