Ewan McGregor joins Jim Carrey in gay prison romance

According to today's Variety Ewan McGregor has signed on to play opposite Jim Carrey in the gay prison romance, I Love You Phillip Morris.

Carrey was attached to the project earlier this year. He will play Steven Russell, a married con man who gets sentenced to 3 years in the Texas prison system and falls in love with his cellmate, the titular "Phillip Morris." McGregor will play Morris.

When Morris is eventually released from jail, Russell escapes no less than three times in order to be with him.

The script is based on a book by Houston Chronicle crime reporter Steve McVicker, and the project begins filming this spring after Carrey finishes up work on a Robert Zemeckis motion-capture project (a la Polar Express & Beowulf). This will push the release date for I Love You Phillip Morris to early 2009.

Me, I can't wait for this film and couldn't be happier with the casting. Jim Carrey won me over a few years ago with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and I've been a big fan of McGregor's since Trainspotting. And not simply because he's the film industry's go-to guy for full frontal nudity. (The man has flashed his giblets in too many films to mention.)

Oh all right, after the break I'll mention. And I'll throw in some hot pics of the Scottish actor looking saucy in a kilt to boot!

In case you were wondering The Pillow Book, Young Adam, Velvet Goldmine, Nightwatch and Trainspotting all have McGregor going commando.

Oooo this sounds

Oooo this sounds interesting. Shame it's another two straight actors playing gay, but they are brilliant actors and hopefully they'll make it so it will reach a wide audience.

I guess Brokeback Mountain really lower the gay barrier in

Hollywood. It seems every major Hollywood straight actor want to play a homosexual leading role.(Except for those who run to Scientology for cover.) God forbid, Will Smith would demand a kissing scene with a male lead next. With the exception of Ewen McGregor, the acting could go either way depending on how Jim Carrey commiting to his role.

Not to belittle Brokeback's achievements...

...but Ewan McGregor was playing gay/bisexual looong before it was mainstream to do so (Velvet Goldmine in '98 and The Pillow Book in '96), not to mention the movies he's done with gay sensibility (Moulin Rouge, Down With Love), or his blasé attitude about his own nudity in films (just about every movie he's been in).

This sounds interesting...

A prison love story.  Plus I find myself really drawn to Mr. McGregor.  I don't know why because he's so not my type, but I can't wait to see what he does with this role.  I could do without what's-his-face though.
