News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

A ClayNation-al Tragedy? Not so much.

This week's edition of People magazine won't hit the newstands until Friday, but excerpts from Clay Aiken's coming out interview are already surfacing. Here's a few highlights....

On the timing of his coming out.

"It was the first decision I made as a father. I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn't raised that way, and I'm not going to raise a child to do that."

On the nature vs. nurture debate.

Says Aiken [of his son]: "I have no idea if he'll be gay or straight. It's not something I'll have anything to do with, or that he'll have anything to do with. It's already probably up inside the code there ... No matter what the situation you're in, if you're raised in a loving environment, that's the most important thing."

On possible fan reaction.

"Whether it be having a child out of wedlock, or whether it be simply being a homosexual, it's going to be a lot," He adds that he hopes his fans "know that I've never intended to lie to anybody at all. ... But if they leave, I don't want them to leave hating me."

So that brings us to the question: How are Aiken's most ardent fans (often referred to as Claymates) taking the big news? I took an extended tour through various online Aiken fan forums late last night and what I saw surprised me.

Yes, there seems to be a lot of shock among the ClayNation populace. (Remember, this is the same crowd who rabidly proclaimed the singer's heterosexuality and denounced anyone who publicly questioned it.) But mixed in with that initial shock were an overwhelming number of messages of support for the singer. The following was typical....

Note the apparently unironic "big broad shoulders" comment above! These ladies obviously still love Clay Aiken, which as a gay man I am heartened by. The denizens of Clay Nation appear more determined than ever to rally around their golden boy.

Of course, mixed in with the many expressions of support for the singer there seems initially to be a running strain of self-pity. It showed up in comments like: "I defended him to my friends and family, now I look like a fool!" or "How am I going to hold my head up at work tomorrow?"

Presumably, these ladies will get through a day of good-natured ribbing and I told you so's and then can finally hold their heads up high as Clay Aiken fans now that they don't have to defend his heterosexuality any more. Hey, If you happen to run into a grieving Clay-Mate today — go easy on them.

Claymates finally facing the obvious truth

Dennis - Thanks for those links. I'm glad to see that many of Clay's "Claynation" fans are still supporting him. Yet, there will always be "fans" who'll feel some sort of "betrayal" from their own wish to be lied to.

He let honest, trusting people like me 'take him at his word'. I truly thought he was being maliciously misrepresented and lied about. I can't believe how STUPID I was.

I repeated Clay's lies about himself a couple years ago. Once online and once in 'real' life. By trusting him, he has essentially turned ME into a liar. That makes ME someone who has misrepresented him. I'm disgusted with myself. I do NOT appreciate him, via his words about himself, turning me into a 'stupid delusional claymate who can't see the writing on the wall'. shame on him. Oh and don't worry, Clay, I don't hate YOU. I hate myself for being so stupidly, naively trusting. THAT will never happen again. Ever. With anyone. Thanks SO much for the extremely hurtful life lesson.

I honestly don't understand what kind of person could get on stage in front of a bunch of screaming females (FOR 5 YEARS) KNOWING that he was misleading them.

Also, I don't think Clay lying to protect the gender of person he is attracted to in ANY way justifies the huge piece of my trusting nature that he stole and destroyed. I literally feel like a different person who I definitely do not like.

I'll not be back in this thread. My feelings are what they are and I have no need to discuss them further.

Posts: 864(09/24/08 8:20 AM) ·         More o    Recent Posts o    Message o    Friend o    Blocking o    Invite o    Ignore User's Posts I have many International fans that have subscribed to my YouTube website. I have sent them a lot of Clay Montages, his LTS, etc. things that they can't get in their country. I have constantly defended him when they have asked me about the rumors. When I am stressed out, I go into my computer room and put on a Tour Video (i.e., SRAAHP Tour or the JBT05) and it cheers me up and I love to watch the banter with Quiana and the WDC with Angela, etc. I can no longer watch these Tour Videos and the JNAT06 with Bridget anymore for all the things that were funny are not funny but a mere hoax. The WDC with Angela that was so sensual and made most of his fans want to be Angela, will leave me empty because I know now that the guy with Angela really likes men not women. He will no longer be able to play so Holier Than Thou if someone says a cuss word like during his JNAT06 with Bridget because lusting after someone of the same sex is not what I would call having a strong religious foundation. If he Tours again, now that he's out of the closet, I presume his Tours will end up being just all singing ala Barry Manilow? What worked in all the other Tours that kept us coming back was because he led us to believe that he was heterosexual the sensual bits with Angela and Quiana chastizing him for saying BALLS will not be funny 'cause it just won't be believable knowing that he lusts after someone of the same sex.

The shock is not about him being GAY,
it's about him not owning up to it when he was being made fun of. He knew that his fans were defending his honor and yet he didn't say a word to us, he kept us in the dark. If he loved us so much for our support all these years then WHY DID WE HAVE TO FIND THIS OUT FROM A NEWS ARTICLE, MAG, etc.? Did he sell the pictures of Parker like other Celebs did: Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, etc. and that is why he didn't tell his fans first? Is it because he doesn't really need our support anymore? HE NEVER GOT ANY AIRPLAY it was his fans that purchased all his CDs, bought his LTS, supported his Charities and his Tours and also UNICEF. Has he made connections in higher places where he no longer needs to Tour and now that he's come out-of-the-closet, he will surely get Airplay for the Entertainment Industry and Hollywood are more accepting of Homosexuals than of Heterosexuals that are very religious and live a wholesome life style. The Clay fans are the ones that will be made fun of this time for being deceived that he was not Gay. Also, were all his friends in the Entertainment Industry (i.e., David Foster, Neil Sedaka, Rosie O'Donnell, Tyra Banks, Jimmie Kimmel, etc.) and also his Touring Staff and backup singers laughing at his fans because THEY KNEW HE WAS GAY and we didn't know?

It's not about him being Gay,
it's about being deceived for 5 years and going to bat for him by explaining to people that have read the rumors and wanted to know if it were true and as a Clay fan, I put myself out their and convinced them that the rumors were false and now my word means nothing to those people for I have now done what Clay has done to his fans . . . I HAVE ALSO DECEIVED THEM and I didn't even know it at the time.

I would like to say here that I have just received 10 hardback copies of LTS I was gonna give away as Christmas presents but I NO LONGER CARE TO DO IT. Anyone that wants a copy just pm me and I also have Tour Videos, TV Appearances, etc. on CD-Rs that I would like to give away to anyone that wants them. The only thing I will keep is the UNICEF Trips and the store bought music CDs but everything else I have is yours for the taking.

    Owmy it gets better

Hilarious! I'm guessing hoping that these are written by overly dramatic 16-yr olds, and not adults.

It's sort of an interesting thing to think about though.... that some fans feel deceived, i mean. Because in this case it's an idol they defended, but I'm sure the same thing can happen when people defend one of their friends (that later turns out to be gay). I'd never even thought about how that may make them feel.

We're deaing with many middle-aged to elderly women here.

Evelyn - I wish it were the case, because THEN, to me at least, it would make sense. We're dealing with ALOT of middle-aged to elderly grown women, who are having the biggest issue in "dealing with" Clay finally being honest with himself and his sexuality to the public.

How do we know their ages?

I don't see anything in the posts to indicate the age of the poster? Are we making assumptions or did someone do research not available in the article?

No one's making assumptions about their ages, because many of the posters have their ages listed on their profiles on that forum.

    Wow, the arrogance of some

Wow, the arrogance of some people... "Oh, he hid his sexuality from me. How could he?! Me, a fan!" and the typical "Now I feel like he's a completely different person! I can't enjoy his music anymore!".

Oh yeah, because one should only listen to the music of people one wants to shag and who at least share an interest in one's own gender.

    The new Liberace

Look, in long ago days before the public had access to the internet there were hordes of delusional women who truly believed that Liberace was straight.  You can't help it if some people want to live in a fantasy world where they imagine that performers, performances and real life are all the same thing.

As for "Hollywood" not supporting "heterosexuals that are very religious and lead a wholesome lifestyle", well I have to ask why they're so dependent on "Hollywood". The last time I checked conservative Christians owned numerous cable outlets and an absolutely epic spread of radio stations nationwide.  Maybe if they were willing to give air time to Christian musicians instead of dry old preachers perpetually re-reading the same Bible verses over and over they could have plenty of air play for Christian entertainers.

    Sorry but

I sincerely hope these are children, because I hate to think any adults were that invested in someone who they don't know and will never meet. And yes, I know how people get about celebrities, but seriously, they deserve what they get when they realize, not that their idols have feet of clay, but that they are not idols,(no pun intended) just human beings, and that what goes on in their lives-is so not about 'you'.

Could the Clay Nation bashing ease up a bit?

I've seen folks on this site and Gays of Daytime get just as bent out of shape IF NOT MORE, over FICTIONAL gay characters so I don't really see why making for of Clay Aiken's fans seems seems reasonable.

Everybody makes stuff up about the celebrities they like and assume we know what's going on in their heads (I've seen folks do that EXACT THING about Lindsey Lohan just yesterday on this site)

If you aren't a fan of Clay Aiken then you're obviously not going to care one way or the other.

But does AE really want to get the reputation for being a place that makes fun of the fans of an out gay singer to such an extent as the above.

Who cares what the Clay Nation members say or don't say.

Unless they are promoting homophobia and spewing anti-gay venom, why do we as queers care how disappointed they are with Clay's coming out.

Let them get it out of their system and maybe we should just leave them to it.

Clay Aiken is not responsible for the behavior of his fans.

Clay Aiken is also not responsible for whether or not folks THOUGHT he was gay before now.

The only people who really knew were those whom he actually told and those with whom he might have had a romantic or sexual relationship.

Everything else was conjecture, rumor, speculation - for good or ill (as if JUST being feminine looking or acting actually means anything about someone's sexuality)

AGAIN I SAY, YAY GAY CLAY!

Whatever difficulties he's had with reconciling his upbringing with being a gay man, he's obviously working through it and getting to a better place about it the best way he knows how.

We can't choose to whom we're born, into what religion or belief system, all we can do is figure out how to live truthfully and with grace and pride and self acceptance.

Seems like he's on the right track.

Coming out is NEVER a publicity stunt if it's the TRUTH.

People Magazine has one of the largest readerships in the country. What better place to tell the world.

We should be encouraging more celebrities to do so, not punishing them by accusing them of trying to get attention.

A spoon full of sugar people!!!

not making fun of Clay fans

I won't speak to the motives of the commenters to my post - but as for the post itself - If anything I was pointing out how great it was that Aiken fans seemed willing to rally around him now that he has come out. I think that is great! He is very lucky to have such a devoted fanbase and now that he's come clean I'm hoping that the GLBT community will likewise rally around him a bit. You know, there was always something very creepy about Clay before - but the creepiness was the fact that he was closeted. Now that he's no longer pretending to be something he's not the creepiness (for me at least) has dissipated. I might never be an ardent fan of Clay Aiken, but at least now I can appreciate his talent as a singer, and I can also respect him for his honesty.

We're not making fun of all

We're not making fun of all Claymates. We're making fun of stupid people who happen to be Claymates. It's like if we make fun of a woman, we're not making fun of all women, we're making fun of that specific woman.
    the herald's picture

    They ARE promoting homophobia

That's what this whole "disappointment" is all about.  The idea that they think they were "defending" Clay; the idea that he's somehow hypocritical for objecting to swearing because everyone knows gay people have no morals; the idea that they can't "show their faces" at work, this is ALL homophobia, pure and simple.  And they deserve to be mocked.

    Fans

All I can say is when will fans of celebrities get a life? Clay never promised anything to anyone except his music. Media and fans seem to think that when someone stands on stage and sings or stands in front of a camera and says lines, that they some how own a piece of that person. It is so out of proportion and getting worse all the time.

People blame the "stars" for putting themselves out there, but if actors or singers just went out to dinner without being mobbed by paps, could do their grocery shopping without being hounded by photographers, and were allowed to lead their lives just like the rest of us that put our pants on one leg at a time, maybe folks would stop putting these people up on impossibly high pedastals, that are bound to crumble eventually under the weight of unrealistic expectations and imaginary god-like personas.

I don't know much about Clay but from what I read, the guy never promised anyone that he was straight. If these fool fans have nothing better to do that make up a whole fantasy world around their chosen and actually make themselves believe it's real, then they have no one to blame but themselves when their little rosy worlds come crashing down.

Maybe this will be a wake up call to fans out there to stop thinking they own celeb's lives and just let them be people, too.

I wish Clay, his partner and his child the best.

You don't know much about Clay?

Well here's the skinny. What now seems like EONS ago a phone call between Clay and a gay pron star surfaced. Clay went into "I don't want to talk about it" mode while the "Claymates" went ballistic towards anyone who suggested that he's anything other than straight. Then came the whole turkey-baster dog and pony show. Now we get the "People" cover.

    It's all ridiculous.

    Psionycx's picture

    The Toxic World of Pop

One has to consider that the world of music, especially Pop music, is driven by appearances.  Ask yourselves, for example, why there aren't more "unattractive" pop stars.

Modern entertainment has become less about art and more about building fantasies around the performers themselves.  This is why there is still so much balking at the idea of gay actors playing straight romantic lead or action hero roles.  The perception is that they would not be "credible" in these roles, regardless of talent, because audiences wouldn't be able to "relate" knowing that they're gay.

This is even more pronounced in pop music where it is considered critically important that stars be visually interesting as well as muscially talented.  There are untold numbers of fat or ugly people with amazing voice talent who will never become pop stars because they're passed over in favor of pretty blonde women or cute boy band guys.

The fans themselves are as caught up in their fantasies about the performers as they are in the performances, maybe more so.  They don't just want to see the performer's talent they want a piece of their lives, and perhaps even fantasize about how they could fit into the performer's life.

    I don't disagree with you...

...I just think it's stupid. And superficial. Talent is talent. Who cares what someone looks like when you are listening to them on your ipod. Anyone can be visually interesting. If it's a movie, yeah, then looks count I guess, as far as how a character is written and portrayed. . But, even though I may fantasize about great looking guys, I don't presume to know anything about who they really are, nor would I get bent out of shape if it turned out they were something different  than the generally held perception. The whole culture has a sickness in it. It creates monsters.

When you look at the posts

Most of the upset is over Clay not being who they "thought he was".  This is rather funny really, since we of course are getting confirmation that he's exactly who we though he was!

But of course it illustrates the problem. The interest isn't just in Clay's performances but how he fits into a romantic fantasy. I'll bet the fangirl who "can't show her face at work" has cuttout pictures of him plastered all over her workspace. She probably dreams of Clay meeting her at one of his shows and falling in love with her at first sight.

Doing Time on Maple Drive -The 2008 Edition

In this one Clay is the gay kid and know the whole family wants to sweep it under the carpet as they fear what the neighbors will say. I find heightened celebrity idolatry to be utterly ridiculous as there is a difference between viewers being upset that a show that they love now sucks or that a favorite performer's latest release also might suck. One addresses a product while the other a person that they might know just a tad about but are convinced that they are destined to marry or something.

This whole investment on a person reeks of the arrested development that parents put up with until their teenage daughters take down their posters of teen icons (some who are so gay) and start dealing with real people. These poor Claymates seem to lack all objectivity, kind of like the Republicans who say that questioning the war is un-American. So this doofus (just my word) was called gay. They went nuts. Karl Rove call your office! They were also saying that he was hideous and had little talent, but that seem to matter less than the line-crossing gay stuff. Never, not my Clay....

As a side-bar: I am having a hard time knowing how to feel about seeing posts across the Internet to support certain articles. It's the wave of the present, but in the wrong hands (most of them) it can serve as the equivalent of "sources say...." thus giving life to something that may have none (not the case here) or to come to some sociological conclusions. This is more intended as food for thought that the application in this particular post. Guillermo's Media Guillotine: Entertainment, journalism, politics, and popular culture.
