News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Angry Puppy video blog 18: "10,000 BC," "New Amsterdam," and more.

This week Marc and Lee are back to discuss just how much they loved the new movie 10,000 BC, as well as the first episode of Fox's new series New Amsterdam. As usual, there's a lot to say about the new episode of Torchwood (in which we meet Martha Jones and finally find out exactly what's going on with Jack and Ianto).

Also this week, Marc and Lee's favorite fictional food products and a brand new member of the Gallery of Gay Action Figures!

    What? no Terminator Season Finale?

The Terminator Season Finale was very good. It was the best of the episodes shown so far. And much more sci-fi than mofo Torchwood. Are you guys going to review it?

That "Amsterdam" garbage is the kind of crap that appeals to Television Executives who if they ever had an original idea their collective heads would explode (paraphrased from Anya BTVS Season 3 "Dopplegangland").

Do you guys like the way Buffy Season 8 is turning out? I personally love it. ALTHOUGH I REALLY WANT TO SEE DRUSILLA IN THE PAGES OF THAT COMIC BOOK SERIES. They HAVE to bring back Drusilla. Oh, and ANYA must come back too.

My Dirty Little Secret with Terminator

I've been avoiding hearing too much about The Sarah Connor Chronicles these last couple of weeks, because (here goes), I stopped watching it three episodes ago. I have them on DVR and plan to catch up, but I lost interest for a while, and I've been on a B-horror-movie kick for a couple of weeks. Thanks for the tip, though. I'll move it back up the queue!

New Amsterdam: I was too nice in the vlog, but I edited out some ranting. After being so down on the awful, awful 10,000 BC, I wanted to be sure that I didn't trash everything in this week's edition.

One cut complaint that I wish I'd left in was about that vaguely racist plot point that Native Americans are magical beings who can grant immortality. A commenter on our blog reminded me of that.

I am really into Buffy Season 8, so much that I am abandoning my policy of waiting for the TPBs.

Yes, on Drusilla. She's nuts, and I love her. I find myself quoting her inadvertently every now and then, which really disturbs those around me.

    Racism

It's the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (movie) effect:  brown-skinned people have the magical ability to bestow immortality, but only on white people apparently, not themselves.

    Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans

These made it into the stockings on Yule a couple of years ago at my house. Very realistic tasting. Especially the vomit flavoured ones. My favourite was grass.

    Vomit-Flavored Beans

Here's a video of a girl tasting the vomit-flavored beans. It takes her a minute to get the full effect.

Do you know what the flavor actually was? Was it a recognizable, natural flavor that happens to be awful or did they re-create the flavor chemically?

i just watched that girl choking down that vomit bean...

...and it took remarkable force of will to avoid going off on a "vomit" tagged tangent into youtube land. I held strong, knowing full well that 50 vomit themed videos later I would really be wishing I'd just gone back to the stack of paperwork on my desk.

Oh hell...like I just won't watch 'em later...

Thanks Lee, your diabolical plan has worked once again!

    new amsterdam

The shows premise is that the main character (what's his name) is immortal because he stepped in front of a gun for a native american girl and was shot dead. As a reward for his sacrifice, the girl magically revived him to give him the gift of finding true love. Which, if you ask me, after 300 some years, ya think he would be a little bit more jaded in the love department than he's depicted.

anyways, thanks for the 10000 BC review. now I won't see it tonight... and i will finish watching your vblog when i come back (stupid me had to sign in and that cancelled the whole video's load thingy(ya i'm computer illiterate))

    New Amsterdam

Either I missed that in the first episode (because I was thinking of something else) or it was in the second episode, which I DVRed but can't bring myself to watch.

I mean, I knew that he was immortal because magical Native Americans made it happen, but I wasn't sure why - if it was a reward, a punishment or just something that they do for kicks.

Thanks for the note, because now I may not need to watch at all. :)

lol, I had to go and wikipedia it to find out what was up with the immortality part. Ah, gotta love the publicly alterable encyclipedea...

    Long ago....

I admit that I was also thrown by the previews for 10,000 BC what with the giant buildings, sailing boats and stuff.  Mind you, I'm fascinated by ancient history and the boundary between the nomadic culture and the first settlements.  But this is kind of in the realm of the theories that the sphinx is prehistoric.  Thanks for the advice.  This may be a wait for Blu-Ray movie.

    Thanks for another great vlog!

    Unfortunate Marketing

I think Marc is right: 10,000 BC would be fun with a bunch of friends at home where you can yell at the screen, but not in the theater where you aren't allowed to boo, hiss and jeer out loud.

We taped right after we saw it, and my initial review was just "blech". In retrospect, I think the marketing is partly to blame. Like I said, if they had not named this 10,000 BC (because, really, why?) and had marketed it as light sci-fi, leaving room for us to imagine it taking place on some other planet or something, I think I wouldn't have been so against it at first.

It would still be "OK" at best. If I had had a few drinks beforehand, who knows?

    Ancient Times

Well, from the look of it 10,000 BC might fit if it were pitched as a Conan or Beastmaster kind of ancient fantasy world.  But the impression I have from the trailers is that this some kind of blend of real world 10,000 BC with Mesopotamia or Egypt circa 3,000 BC.

Then again, historical accuracy is not a big thing in Hollywood.  I still periodically feel irked by 300 and all the gross inaccuracies they put in there to make it appeal to pro-Bush Middle America.  Granted Hollywood has never been the best source of historical education but lately it's really getting pretty far out there.

    I enjoyed it.

hmmm, I actually enjoyed New Amsterdam. However, I do see the points that you make in the blog and how they would take away from the show. Agree that they were a bit heavy with the Aquaman syndrome as Marc calls it, but I'd give it a little slack as its the pilot and its trying to establish a lot of groundwork in one hour. Part of the problem might be that in was sold to the public as Sci-fi when there really is not that much to it. Have not watched enough blogs to get a sense of your tastes to recommend episode two. Interesting twist that adds an interesting dynamic to a couple of the characters. You've given me something to think about with your comments about the depiction of Native Americans being racist.

Oh well, at least I'm in agreement with Marc about Rose vs Martha as companions of the Doctor.

Not too much into Sci-fi / geekdom stuff but I am enjoying the blog. Keep up the great job.

    not sure I agree...

with the depiction of Native Americans in this show as being racist. There are lots of stories of mysticism and magic from the Native American lore. In Canada we have a channel- APTN-(Aboriginal Peoples Television Network) by and for first nations peoples that show movies like "Skinwalker" which is full of mysticism as well as first nation actors. I think that's reading too much into it calling the depiction of an ancient legend (no matter how made up it is) racist.

It's More the Pattern than the Instance

I get what you're saying - having a group of people portrayed with some mysticism doesn't necessarily imply racism, but, like in Psionycx's example, it seems like there's a tendency for non-white people to be magical and mysterious in a lot of programming, so it starts to seem peculiar after a while. And even more peculiar that only the main character (usually a white dude, I think) seems to be able to benefit from the mystical, magical powers.

The fact that we reviewed this right after 10,000 BC (which is racially, er, unusual) probably contributed to my noticing that.

Though I suppose there must be some shows in Europe about non-white people who get blessed by druids or ancient Norsemen or something. I just never see those.

    Doctor Who

Glad to here that you are fans of Doctor Who as well as Torchwood, will there be any reviews on new Doctor Who episodes when it comes on the air in about a months time, (Not sure what time it starts on BBC America) as I love both shows and Doctor Who also touches upon LGBT stuff too, not as much as Torchwood. Plus, Captain Jack is going to be in the next series according to John Barrowman and Wikipedia. So another good reason to watch!

    TARDIS ahoy!

We certainly will cover the new season of Doctor Who!  I've watched the show since high school and have seen almost every episode (except the lost ones of course) from the beginning.

Very excited about both the new Doctor Who, and the Sarah Jane Chronicles... I think both come to the US in April though I haven't seen a confirmed air date for the Doctor Who premiere yet.

    According to the Sci Fi

According to the Sci Fi schedules on their website, Doctor Who series 4 starts on 18th April at 8:30pm. The Sarah Jane Adventures is immediatly before it (the first week starting at 7:30 with the 1 hour premier, after that at 8pm).

I find it a bit odd they're showing SJA at that time, it's a childrens show (a well made childrens show, but nevertheless, still aimed at a younger audience). In the UK it was shown at 4:30 in the afternoon.

    demarcate's picture

    Thanks

I couldn't find Doctor Who premiere on their site but honestly I can never find anything on that site.

Just confirmed that we'll do a preview of SJA in the next few weeks... stay tuned!
