News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Angry Puppy video blog 28: Pirates and Cylons and Flynn, Oh My!

In this week's episode, Marc and Lee jump back into Doctor Who (loving the Sontaran aliens and the return of Martha Jones), Lost (favorite moment? Sun goes badass and takes over her father's company), and Battlestar Galactica (Is Lt. Gaeta's leg the final cylon?)

Then featured guest Flynn DeMarco (a.k.a Fruit Brute) joins the boys to talk about all the goings on at GayGamer.net.

Check it out after the break!

    I'm totally out of gaming

I'm totally out of gaming practise lately, since my brother sold his Xbox instead of giving it to me to bring to college. Which means that I can see all the new games coming out, but know that grad school will unfortunatly take precedence over me getting to play any of them. All that's left at home is the Wii. As soon as I got back from school I challenged my sister to MarioKart and promptly got my ass handed to me repeatedly. She's nine.

    Gaming and Grad School

I missed a whole generation and a half of the gaming world while I was in grad school. I went straight from the Nintendo 64 to the Xbox 360 as my main consoles, with nothing in between.

In retrospect, it would have given me better career options to stick with the games. ;)

For a while, I was the more casual gamer, and my brother was the hardcore geek. He had an N64, Playstation, and a Dreamcast. Then he discovered girls, who weren't that into games, which left it to me to shoulder the burden. By the time my sister was born, we were an almost console-free household. I'm just going to have to work on it til I can beat her, and earn the total respect and pride that only comes with defeating a small child.

Grad school is going to take a toll on all my geeky pursuits, because all my geek friends are graduating and moving on, while I'm getting another degree in Postcolonial Identity. That'll totally make me a contributing member of society

    Defeating a Small Child

"...and earn the total respect and pride that only comes with defeating a small child."

That's how I feel when I play Risk with Marc.

    Boggle!

When I was little, Boggle was Saturday evening. My mother was obsessed, and needed people to play with, so out came the set right after Blind Date and Gladiators. She's moved on to Internet Scrabble now though, so my sister's left to her own devices.

I think I'll have to steal her batteries to stop her getting any better.

"The Void" - Voyager was lost in The Void and formed an alliance with the Hierarchy among others.

"Renaissance Man" - the Doctor disguised himself as other crewman in order to eject the warp core to pay the Hierarchy ransom.

    Great VLOG this week

You should have more hawt Video Online Journalists like Flynn.

I've lost all hope that Dwight Schrute(Rainn Wilson) will make the top ten. I don't consider John Barrowman a geek.

Where's BSG "Sine Qua Non"? Anyway, it was probably the weakest episode of the season so far. Yes, Romo's cat is an imaginary cylon like "Head Six". Apparently, the destruction of the Cylon Hub happened off-screen. That sucks big time. Well, two episodes left. D'anna talks with everyone (Laura Roslin). I'm kinda pissed that Lucy Lawless does not appear in the last 10 episodes. She was great, in fact, I think that the interaction between Tricia Helfer and Lucy Lawless on the show was great, it should have been developed more.

Will there be  a review of the New Hulk movie? I'm not that excited for it and I wonder whether it's worth seeing.

How about a poll on TheAngryPuppy.com about who likes Deep Space Nine over Doctor Who and vice versa?

    Our Server Floweth Over

If other hawt video online journalists like Flynn want to come on the show, we'd be glad to have them. :P

The Hot Geek 10 results are indeed surprising. We'll talk about it in the next episode. In a related note, "Sine Qua Non" will also be in the next epsiode. We tape these things after we watch the shows, so we're also one week off.

I think we'll need to do a summer movie roundup (Indy, Iron Man, Hulk, etc.). Stay tuned! I still have to see two of those, but now that our usual shows are winding down for the season, my daily allotment of entertainment won't be so full so quick.

Great suggestions for AP polls! We're giving our server a break after the onslaught of the Hot Geek 10 voting, but watch this space.

BSG Guess What's Coming to Dinner and Sine Qua Non

Does anyone else see how sinister Hera was in setting up "Rebel Six" for the kill? She totally played her mother, "Athena"  with those crayon drawings of Six and then Athena "miraculously" found "Rebel Six" by just wandering the halls? I don't think so. I think Hera knew EXACTLY where "Rebel Six" was and she knew exactly what her mother was going to do to her.

In Sine Qua Non we have a big no-no, Cylon on Cylon sex producing a baby, Caprica Six is pregnant with Saul Tigh's child. This was the biggest WTF moment of the episode. Well, actually the biggest WTF was the OFF-SCREEN attack on the Cylon Hub (Maybe. It is possibly something else. However, the next episode "The Hub" could be a flashback). Ronald D Moore is playing with fire here. If all the good Cylon Civil War action takes place off-screen then many fans simply won't tune in for the second half of season 4 in 2009.

"The Hub" and "Revelations" had better be good or else.

    Ah yes - C on C action.

Didn't even think about that - I don't know why. You're right, that is strange and this is the first cylon on cylon conception, or so it seems. Still I trust in the show's remarkable consistency and will be curious to see how all is explained and resolved.

    BSG The Hub

www.IO9.com has a brief preview of this Friday's episode focusing on Roslin on the Basestar. IT'S REALLY GOOD. Search for today's "Morning Spoilers" section. And it seems like its a flashback episode in the sense that it tells us what was happening while Lee Adama was weasiling his way into the Presidency and Romo Lampkin's Cylon Cat was trying to influence who became President. Do you think they have tiny resurrection tanks for pets? Maybe there's a great big Virtual Scratching post on Kobol where a Cat/Mouse hybrid baby is sleeping in a rocker.

    Marc and Lee, yay!

Glad to have you back, if slightly behind schedule. But that's okay, because my DVR broke and so I haven't had the chance to watch the Lost finale yet.

I can't wait to hear what you make of "The Doctor's Daughter". "Silence in the Library" is excellent so far, although those people I know who were introduced to Alex Kingston on ER have found her character a bit irritating (to me she'll always be Moll Flanders).

Have you guys been watching for themes and foreshadowing on DW this series? There's no Bad Wolf, Torchwood or Saxon, but there are definitely recurring elements that have got to be building toward something, and the speculation has been a lot of fun.

Flynn is adorable. I'd totally have voted for him had I known as much in a timely manner.

    Silence in the Library

Apropos of upcoming Doctor Who episodes, I read that there's some Apple love in "Silence in the Library", though I haven't seen it yet. Something about all the old keyboards in some future scenario being Mac keyboards.

And there were some screenshots of BSG showing that the computers there are running Windows. Weird.

I'm actually behind on Doctor Who, so I'd better leave the rest to Marc. :D

    first of all

excuse me please, but I just have to enter my quite rare but then all the more super girlish pale pink fluffy-mode. But you know - this casual elbow-over-knee-thing was just adorably cute - awww
    pink-mode ends

I really should stay away from those overly fangirlish/fanwomanlish/fanGRANDma-ish  barrowman-appreciation-forums - they have a really bad influence on me. if I ever utter the word "squee" in a serious way, please delete my account.

But back to topic - or rather: finally arriving at the actual topic:

Games: I liked to play sweet two-dimensional games on my younger sister's nintendo something during the early 90s. And later using a proper computer. Games like lemmings or super mario with this dinosaur or dragon (?) of his and something with a gorilla ( as far as I remember) and rayman. I loved that. Simple hopping onto things - mostly mushrooms, collecting coins and forcing turtles out of their shells and gliding through worlds of ice - wonderful.
But somehow I lost it and when I thought about play-stationing again everything seemed to be 3-dimensional - and you know - I just thought that to be too much pressure. I had all brain-cells going just to watch after what happened left and right - it was far too much to worry about what was up behind and in front of me.

Another topic: tv-series. I really enjoy your comments on doctor who/torchwood - simply because I am able to watch it remotely at the same time. Not quite legally - but at least not as illegally as I would watch all the american series you talk about.
That's really something that annoys me increasingly. For example: here in germany, we'll have the first david-tennant-as-the-doctor-appearance next weekend. So we have just finished season one. SEASON ONE! And of course: Torchwood nowhere on the horizon. And there are other series that have never been shown on german tv (firefly for example) - the final two angel-seasons were shown quite recently somewhere at nightly hours.
Considering how close the world wide web-fandom is -  it's increasingly frustrating, that we can't legally watch new episodes of our favorite series when they are actually discussed within the "insert-favorite-series-name-here" - community.

Ummm.... rant over i think ;-)

Hope your eye is better soon, Lee :-)

    No German Firefly‽

I hope you got to see Firefly somewhere else if not on TV.

If you only get two seasons of Angel, I'd rather have the last two then the first two, so that's not too bad.

    theAngryPuppy.com

    well,

they did show all angel seasons. The first two and a half  some years back , then they suddendly stopped right in the middle of season three and now - three years later, they showed the rest.
I bought the dvds of course but that's not an option for everyone.

And I bought firefly too just recently and loved it. So searched for someone to discuss it with: visited some forums just to discover that every possible aspect i would have liked to talk about , had already been discussed several times (and mostly years ago on top of that).
    meh...

that's just why I think, the worldwide tv-stations should form something like a - shall i say world wide web? ;-)

Okay okay - you all have been so forthcoming about your gaming backgrounds, and Lee's been on my case since I made fun of him for being a Wii guy... so here goes.

FACT: My video game path was Atari / PC / Sega Genesis / PlayStation / Xbox 360. (note no Nintendo in the mix)

FACT: I do tend to favor the shoot-em-up, guts & glory, zombie destruction games.

I damn the fact that I didn't vote for Flynn in top 10 geek guys! Had I remember who he was(and how he looked like) I would have voted for him (great tats and facial hair btw). Strangely I first heard of him when he lauched the top gay characters a year ago (from Towleroad or AfterElton/Ellen) and recently heard again of him when he was voted #2 as the hottest... and also his article of the gay side of Bully. Sine Qua Non

Quite a snoozer for me. I cant believe they followed such a stunner with such a weak one. Not even the revelation that the Six is pregnant made a dent on me. It was the logical conclusion from the previews. Since they cant concieve with each other, I have a feeling its not Tighs; but then again, the four are supposed to be special so we will see.

Gaeta, his leg and his song. I cant believe how many people dismissed it as annoying, everything is a clue in this show. Could be singing about Danna, the line of true love correlates with what the oracle told her, but what would be the point of that. I think its about the final one, who I think its a woman. Quite a few thing fit. It was no coincidence Ethena bumped into her before the shooting.

Oh well, well see. Two weeks I reckon. The last show of this half of the season its not called Revelations for nothing.

BTW, the shooting was not irrational, it was to deliberate. And interesting thought about Hera.

And what do you guys think of changing "Last Supper"picture on BSG site?

Cant wait for friday to come.

    Changing Last Supper Picture

    Hello Netogeno.

The Last Supper picture is changing?! I didn't save the original so I can't do a comparison. But, what do you see? Do you think there are any significant clues?

If you go to www.IO9.com and look for today's Morning Spoilers section you'll find a preview clip of "The Hub". Laura Roslin is having "visions" between jumps of the Cylon Basestar she's trapped on. This appears to be related to the visions D'anna had between resurrections when she was commiting suicide on a regular basis.

If the visions are any indication: Baltar and Roslin and Kara Thrace must all be cylons. Theoretically, Kendra Shaw fits the first Cylon Hybrid's prophecy.

I want a Cylon Cat now; but only if its imaginary like Baltar's "Imaginary Six".

    netogeno's picture

    Last Supper

    Hey Metabaron.

Well they are suttle. Here are the links:

    Original (ET)

    http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20169703,00.html

    Modified (Scifi.com)

    http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/

The first change was the disappearance of the cup Roslin is burning incense. I figured that meant a change in her beliefs or her way of thinking. Which apparently is happening.

And now the chalice, that is supposed to represent the final cylon, seems to be closer to Leeland (who knew?) than it was before. I take that as a hint that The One is close to Lee. That might be quite significant.

In my book, that puts the spotlight on Dualla, she is the female I refer to in the above post.

    What do you think?

Thanks for the link to the preview.

You lost me on Kendra,. What profecy is that?

    Metabaron's picture

    Lt. ? Kendra Shaw

In Battlestar Galactica Razor, Lt. Kendra Shaw was the first one to meet the "Original" Cylon Hybrid on the antiquated Basestar. The Cylon Hybrid talks of the final cylon as seeking redemption. The main storyline of RAZOR was the actions of Shaw on the Scylla. The reason she chooses to stay on the Antiquated Cylon Basestar and manually set off the Nuke was partly because of what she had done. Also, the Cylon Hybrid calls her "my child". I think that means much more than just a huge messianic complex

Everything the Cylon Hybrid said to Shaw on the Antiquated Basestar has come true so far. That's why I used the word prophecy.

If you read the report associated with the video on www.IO9.com you'll notice a rumor going around stating that the Cylon Hybrid on the Antiquated Basestar is what is left of  Dr. Graystone (The creator of the Cylons). Dr. Graystone will be a major character in the spin-off series "Caprica".

As an aside, I hope Ronald D. Moore's "Virtuality" series for Fox, fails so he can concentrate on "Caprica". I don't like the premise of the series "Virtuality" it sounds like it would get real old real fast.
