News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Angry Puppy video blog 33: Special Witches Edition

Luckily, the dead space that is summer TV gives Angy Puppy's Marc & Lee time to catch up on the latest from gay comic artists Brian Andersen (So Super Duper) and Tommy Roddy (Pride High). With all this reading time, Marc's seemingly never-ending foray into the Dune universe and Lee's new-found interest in the Mayfair witches (including the ubiquitous gay and bisexual males found in all of Anne Rice's pre-conversion novels) led to their latest list of 15 favorite witches in geekdom.

Check it out after the break!

Willow (and My Knees) !

Yeah, I did that Willow thing on purpose.  And Marc won't budge on the Bene Gesserit.

And, yeah, I'm wearing shorts. It gets REALLY hot in here when we tape these. We left the air conditioner on last time, and it ruined the audio. This is take 2.  ;)

Primeval

Give it time. It gets better.

Actually, I thought the same thing when I saw it, but the plot begins to unravel a few episodes down the line. Im like you guys, I catch every detail and yes, this show has some of those "hop hop la la" moments that make you go...wait? But I was willing to overlook them for this is a very entertaining show. If you have made allowances for Torchwood before, then you might not have a problem with this one.

No gay characters here, but we are in agreement, the eyecandy in this show is goood. Sexy Henshall representing the older crowd, Murray as the studly guy and Potts for the twink inclined. Plus, you get a lot of military types as a side dish.

Dr. Who was good. Sorry to see Dona go. I really liked her as a companion.

The List: I must tell you how surprised I was to see Willow at no. 3 considering...But Im in with complete agreement with your choices.

The Mayfair witches are so delicious and wicked. And Marc I completely agree with you, at least where The Witching Hour is concerned, I think its Anne Rices best book or at least the one I have enjoyed the most. The rest of the trilogy, not so much, Lasher could be salvaged but Taltos was really disappointing.

And the Bene Gesserit, very complicated and misterious breed of witches. In all great choices.

Great episode guys, those dunish interludes were hilarious.

Recommendation of the Week: Dragon's Den

- I'll definitely watch a few more episodes of Primeval. I've been leaving the TV on BBC America a lot lately anyway (Dragon's Den!), so I'm sure I'll end up catching the whole season. It's a nice bonus when there are gay characters, but it's definitely not necessary. In fact (don't shoot me), I'd be into Torchwood even without the gay content. Though it would be quite a bit less campy and fun.

- Willow at number 1 would have been just too predictable. Even for us...  I have about 50 pages left to The Witching Hour, so no spoilers (at least until tomorrow...)!

I love Spaced... One of my

I love Spaced... One of my favourite ever TV shows. And you guys get a much, much better DVD then we do. I do love the 'Vulva' episode... 'Noone wants to hear about a relationship between two heterosexual men, especially when one of them is the most magnificent woman alive.'

Interview With a Vampire was the furthest into Anne Rice I ever got. A few of my nerdy goth friends were really into her when I was about fifteen, but by the time I'd gotten round to them, I already knew what a massive tool she was. Her son's stuff is pretty good though.

I'm totally with you on the series withdrawl. I've rewatched all of BSG already this summer, and I've spent the last while tracking down the extended episodes (another thing we don't get on our DVDs). I was planning on spaceing it out, but that kind of didn't work.

Did any Discworld witches make the list? Granny Weatherwax is my all-time-favourite witch.

Discworld

That's the second Discworld recommendation in these comments! I'll add it to my reading list as soon as I finish Taltos and Lasher. But judging by netogeno's comments, maybe I should put those two off for a while.  ;)

Terry Pratchett is my favourite author, ever. I used to fall asleep listening to the audiobooks when I was little. The ones about the Watch (the police force) are by far the best, though the Witches are excellent as well. The whole series is a near-perfect melding of epic fantasy and left-field humour, with plenty of biting satire and pretty much every big genre represented, though the police proceedurals seem to be a particular favourite of his.

He's also written an excellent book about the apocolype, with Neil Gaiman.

Willow not in top spot? you really start to subvert your viewers expectations ;).  The Buffy-witches would have been my top spot btw - but just because I don't know any of the others on your list. I guess the only other witches I know are the charmed ones, sabrina ;-) - oh - and granny weatherwax =)

Other than that: it was -as always- a pleasure to listen to you (and to watch of course) and I can assure you Daleks aren't half as frightening when they are speaking german with a strong english accent ;)

Terry Pratchett rules!

You've got to add the Discworld books to your reading list - while Granny and her witches are awesome, I have to agree, the police procedurals are my favorites, along with the ones about the post office and the mint.  I stumbled on them in a Neil Gaiman phase, read "Good Omens" then had to read the entire set (and there are a lot of them).  It's rare that books make me laugh out loud, but the whole Discworld universe, standing on the back of four elephants, on the back of a giant turtle, swimming through the universe, are amongst my favorites in recent years.  Technically classified as "young adult" but generally found in the Sci-Fi sections of Barnes & Noble, they're light, quick reads that never disappoint.  Well worth investing in a set.

Out loud and falling over

Pratchett regularly makes me double over with laughter and gasp for breath. Sometimes I'll think of a favorite line years later, and it still does the trick.

Lee and Marc, if you start Discworld, don't start at the beginning (the first two books are actually the weakest, IMO) but do look at the reading order guide that traces the different story arcs. I recommend starting with the witches books and the Death books, as they're good for establishing the setting. My personal favorites, though, are the City Watch and the Tiffany Aching books (the "YA" portion of the witches timeline, although the "young" part of the story is limited to Tiffany's age, really).

I've never actually read any of the Rincewind books, they never struck me. The ones that guide list as 'ancient civilisation' and 'Industrial revolution' are all pretty much stand-alone books, though a bunch of the minor characters turn up again and again, because they're mainly set in the same city.

other Pratchett

and if you haven't read anything by Pratchett yet and don't want to dive into cold water directly, you could start with the Bromeliad Trilogy - which isn't set in the discworld and is not quite as weird (it actually has a beginning and an end and sort of a proper story and stuff) but is fun to read as well. May Bargains Galore go with you!

Twiglets and Martha

I think Martha is going to be on the UK's version of Law & Order instead. I hope they're going to be like the earlier seasons. I used to have a small addiction to that show, but ever since Serena Southerlyn left, it's been kind of meh. Not because of her. That's just around the time it stopped being any good. When Detective Green left, I stopped watching altogether.

So, is Mickey joining the Torchwood cast? Anyone have any inside knowledge there?

Someone must like Twiglets. They rated your comment down.  ;) I actually have some kind of marmite-flavored something that's been in the refrigerator for about a year. I wanted to like it, but I couldn't acquire a taste for it. A little goes a lo-o-ong way.

L&O: London and Jamie Bamber's Accent

Oh, they didn't like me either. Someone's rating down all my comments this week.  Oh, woe, how will I ever earn enough points to edit my comments with abandon. ;) Do you earn points for ratings? I actually have no idea how the AfterElton point system works. :-/

I don't think we'll get Law & Order: London on BBC America, but I'd be interested in seeing how your legal system is interprteted by your media. Everything I know about law and the police I learned from Law & Order, so let's hope I'm never arrested. I'm not sure how accurate that show is.  :D

Oh, and, of course, I'd be interested in seeing Jamie Bamber using his real accent.

Freema Agyeman should do both L&O and Torchwood. Let's start a petition.

I heard somewhere that

I heard somewhere that Jamie's character was (at least first-generation) Irish, which might mean he has to do an Irish accent. Which couldn't possibly be worse then Mark Sheppard's attempt, and Jamie's pretty good at them, so it shouldn't be a problem.

However, the guy playing Jamie's partner (if what I've heard is true) is Bradley Walsh, which is not boding well.

Can't Be Worse than David Boreanaz

He set a new low for bad Irish accents in Angel, IMHO.  It's nothing against him personally or as an actor, but they should have found some conceit to excuse away his brogue in those flashbacks.  :F

I think we've gotten used

I think we've gotten used to our accents (there are about five million of them) being mangled on screen. Pierce Brosnan (WHO IS FROM IRELAND) hit a new low in 'Evelyn'. I gave Sheppard the benefit of the doubt because at least Romo Lampkin wasn't supposed to be Irish, just come from somewhere with an Irish-eque accent.

I think Jamie's mother is Irish, so that's a good sign. Even though he couldn't pronouce 'Niamh' when he met my friend at a Con.

Later Rice not Homophobic

I don't think she's homophobic (her son is gay, after all).

All of her older books that I've read have at least one or two gay or bisexual characters. I haven't read her latest novels (since she found God), but I doubt that the ones about the life of Jesus have much gay content.

Has anyone read them?

I know that her earlier interpretations of Jesus were less conventional and even blasphemous to some (Lestat drank the blood of Christ, after all), but my understanding was that these new books were very orthodox.

Further comment to come

I have to head to work and can't finish watching right now, but I feel compelled to tell you that if you think Primeval is confusing now, just wait. Is it worth sticking around for? Maybe to make fun of. It's entertaining in its own completely-lacking-logic-and-science way, but if you're busy, put it at the bottom of the to-do list.

In that case, have at!

Having basically called it crap, I did watch the entirety of both seasons/series of Primeval, mostly rooting for the geeky kid and the S Club 7 girl to get together already. I'm actually curious to see what you think of it as it develops - particularly the ep where the anomolies were opening underwater, an ep which made logic its crying little bitch, it was so baffling. But the effects are good and the wtf-ery of it is fun.

Thank you for saving me from Birds of Prey, which I'd dropped onto the end of my Netflix queue out of curiosity. And while I'm at it, thanks for way back recommending the Azzarello arcs of Hellblazer; I finally got ahold of both Freezes Over and Highwater, and I really enjoyed them. I'll probably get the first two books at some point, even though they've been rated less well.
