Your Asshat of the Week: Maine's Bishop Richard Malone

Our asshat nominees this time out included some schmucks who collectively owe President Obama, Taylor Swift, and a U.S. Open lineswoman sincere apologies. Also, we have yet another Southern police force that gets its jollies harassing gay bar patrons, an Eastern block nation who thinks Elton John is too old (and gay) to adopt, and finally a Catholic Bishop in Maine who required a second collection at Mass services statewide to raise funds to fight gay rights.

Well, if he can pass the hat, we can too! So congrats to Bishop Richard Malone for winning this week's asshat.

Here are the voting results for this week's poll:

We'll be back with a new selection of Asshat Smackdown nominees on Friday in editor Michael Jensen's Best Gay Week Ever column.

As a Cradle Catholic who has

As a Cradle Catholic who has watched in horror as church hierarchy has become more and more anti-gay, which as a result, has deeply hurt me & other gay Catholics, I applaud this vile creature's election as Asshat of the Week.

The popular reasoning is that these homophobic clergy are "self-loathing."  I don't think that's the case - apparently, there's all sorts of homo debauchery going on in the seminaries & in parishes.  Rather, I think they just hate us 'mos who aren't afraid to live honest lives.  It's a matter of, "If I can't have it, neither can you."

Serena's Semifinal Snap

I've been a tennis fan and started following both the ATP Tour and the WTA Tour a few years ago, in that time, Serena Williams has become my favorite player on either tour. I personally believe that she reacted fairly to that rediculous call made by a lines-person who just wanted to try to affect the outcome of the match. I think that Serena just took it way too far and instead of lashing out at the lines-person, she should have focused that anger into her game. Although let's face it, Clijsters was just too good that day and the match was as good as done when that foot-fault call was made.

I just wanted to point out that this semifinal match was on Saturday and before her double's match on Monday, Serena sincerely apologized for her behavior, twice.

Also, I understand why this incident was slumped together with the Kanye West-Taylor Swift incident and Rep. Joe Wilson's inappropriate behavior, but it just seems to me that the magnitude of the Joe Wilson incident and the incident with Serena are a bit far apart to be classified together.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great day!!
