Asshat Smackdown! for June 03, 2009
You might be familiar with our regular Friday feature, Battle of the Network Gays, where we ask you to crown the Gay of the Week. You folks seem to enjoy crowning people a lot. So we thought we'd introduce a new feature: Asshat Smackdown! Every Wednesday we'll ask you to select from a current crop of schmucks, jerks, demagogues and harpies to see who is most deserving of the week's coveted Asshat Crown! We'll announce the results right here on the blog on Friday, and that asshat will reign supreme until a new challenger is crowned the following week. Curious to know more about the challengers for this, our inaugural Asshat Smackdown!? Check them out after the break, and vote for your favorite! This week's contenders:
Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel's "Love Me Tender" package Bill O'Reilly Why? For failing to acknowledge this week that his froth-at-the-mouth rhetoric just might have incited Dr. George Tiller's assassination. Carrie Prejean Why? Because we had to include a woman in here somewhere, and I'm sorta peeved she has better arms than me. (Okay, and because she appeared on FOX News as a "special commentator" to announce that Prop 8 was upheld.)
Rob Williams & Arnie States of Rob, Arnie & Dawn In the Morning. Why? For suggesting that parents should throw shoes at their transgender children. Truly disgusting.
Vote for your favorite by 8 AM EDT on Friday, June 5. And be sure to check back Friday afternoon to see which asshat our readers have carried to glory! Note: Write-in candidates (other than AfterElton.com staff!) are encouraged. Submitted by on Wed, 2009-06-03 17:05. |

Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons Why? On Monday he vetoed a bill which would have given domestic partners many of the same rights as married couples in that state. He claimed the bill conflicted with a 2002 Nevada state constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman. He may have a point. I mean, we all know with what high regard Nevadans treat traditional marriage!

Here's a good idea
Fabulous idea, AE.
Was tempted to submit a write-in vote for Tony Perkins after reading this earlier today: http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/06/03/same.sex.immigration/index.html?iref=mpstoryview
But ultimately Rob & Arnie got my vote. So revolting.
An embarassment of riches...
I Know
Easy vote
I'm never one to defend that right-wing douchebag Bill O'Reilly, and if this was a website of a different theme he would sweep the competition. What he did, however, is more hurtful to the Pro-choice movement (and humanity in general) than to GLBTs specifically, so unfortunately I feel he has to be disqualified
Carrie Prejean (is it a coincidence that she has a horror film for a namesake???) and Jim Gibbons are both total buttwipes but what they did was more of a try-and-keep-GLBTs-second-class-citizens thing and not actually incite-violence-against-them thing
Those white-trash bottom-dwelling hatemongers Rob Williams & Arnie States, however, could probably give Fred Phelps a run for his money. Their stomach-turning tirade against transgender kids had my hands itching for man-neck
They win by a landslide
Total agreement!
well, hey...
I think carrie is old news by now and i'm not gonna give her anymore attention..though i just did....ah, dammit liz
anyways, i voted for rob and arnie.....it's one thing to disagree and not understand something, but i think to say "i would do XYZ to a CHILD and call them this and that" is another.
Actually...
There was an article in the Las Vegas Sun newspaper saying that the Nevada legislature has overridden governer Gibbons's veto of domestic partnerships
They go into effect this fall.
Damn, I wanted to vote for
Damn, I wanted to vote for all of them..
Btw, I'm not sure to understand the Dr.Tiller 's thing, what happened?
Anyway, I voted for Rob Williams & Arnie something! Can we throw shoes at them?GW Bush really started a new fashion ;)
Dr. Tiller
I may not have this 100% accurate; as FoxNews is blocked on my TV I’ve never seen O’Reilly’s show. And, being pro-choice, but lacking a uterus, I don’t really follow the abortion stories all that closely either. From what I’ve read, O’Reilly was basically stalking Tiller on his show, calling him baby killer and sending out an “investigative reporter” to show up outside his door to stick cameras in his face. It’s been said that given how much time he’s spent verbally going after this man, that it could have incited the assassination. You know, being how sound minded his viewers are…
This reminds me of
This reminds me of a case here in Norway.. A homophobic woman got a free speech award for slamming gay people. She said homosexuality was unntaural, she called us sick, and she said kids growing up with lesbian parents are handicapped... Cause, you know, having gay parents is suck a liability. OK, I am all for free speech, but do they have to reward a homophobic moron with an award and 50 000 dollars? She definitely deserves the asshat award! Definitely... What she said is a disgrace, and she is flat out discriminating against a minority. It's just plain out wrong. I did laugh a bit when I came across an article in a newspaper some days ago though.. About gay penguins in a zoo. They refused to mate with their female counterparts, but the gay penguins were a couple, and they have been for years. They were obviously more interested in each other than any of the female penguins. So much for homosexuality being "unnatural"..
Of the Americans.. Rob Williams et al. truly deserve the award, can't believe they said that. Transgendered people can not help the fact that they were born in the wrong body! What they said was truly awful.
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.
Agree
I completely agree. That is sick!
It was my reason for voting. I have a child myself, I hope that I would come up with a better solution if I ever discover she has conflicting feelings about herself...
My vote
I'm surprised
...that this morning radio show is getting so much press. Of course I agree that what they said was terrible, but Kevin and Bean on KROQ in Los Angeles is one of the largest radio shows and has been running forever in a huge city, and they say homophobic, fatphobic, transphobic...etc. things like this on a daily basis. They also stream it on the internet. Why, just this morning they discussed a saying that one of the hosts made up and had a "trial" about whether it was "gay" or not and the callers suggested the electric chair and many other forms of corporal punishment for it being so "gay." And this happens not only on weekday mornings, but also on their 5-6pm show "Cinco de la tarde" every weekday and it reruns on weekends. Someone must know SOMETHING about what's been said or done about this, if anything at all. And if nothing has, why not?
PS
Asshat Choice
Same here. Everyone on the list is pretty despicable, but obviously so. For every person that might agree with them, I sincerely hope there's five or more that find their viewpoints disgusting. I would like to think that every time they open their mouths, they do more to build further support for LGBT and other causes than harm against them.
But Gov. Gibbons is in a position of real power, where he could theoretically help people, do good, and raise or contribute to the level of discussion already occurring in state and national politics. Vetoing a bill that I assume was supported by the legislature and at least some constituents for whatever ridiculous "reason" he wants to use is, IMO, an abuse of that power.
I think the fact...
I think the fact that they talked about beating CHILDREN is why this all came out to light.
if someone wants to call me, a 24 year old woman, a name....go ahead...but i can stand there and defend myself, whereas children don't have that kind of strength or know how to do so. same with being beaten. I could probably fight to the death, but a kid? not really.
thats how i see it though, so eh.
