Battle of the Network Gays: September 24, 2009

Every week we pick the gays who we think have made the biggest splash in television (or pop culture in general) and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week. We'll announce the winner in Friday's BGWE column, and that champ will reign until a new set of challengers are introduced the following week to try to steal his title.

Last week, Glee's Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) won your hearts and took the crown. This week he defends the title against some very worthy challengers, including an ever-popular awards show host, a gay cop with a heartwrenching coming out story, and a pair of hilarious gay fathers.

Check them out after the break, and vote for your favorite!

This week's contenders:

  • Last week's winner, Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), had yet another strong showing on Glee, becoming the unlikely star of his high school football team and then tearfully coming out to his supportive Dad. Way to go, Kurt!
Kurt comes out to his father on Glee, and it goes much better than expected.
  • Over on One Life to Live, poor Oliver Fish (Scott Evans) had a far tougher time coming out to his fundamentalist parents. Good thing roommates Layla and Cristian had his back.
  • The ABC mockumentary Modern Family debuted, and gay fathers Cameron (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) & Mitchell (Eric Sotnestreet) had us rolling in the aisles.
  • Finally, Neil Patrrick Harris rode into town to save yet another awards show from irrelevance. This time it was the Emmys.

OMG!

That's Mike O'Malley playing Kurt's dad! I loved him in "Yes Dear"!

Tough call, but I voted for Oliver since he was so strong in facing his parents.

I may be straight, but I'm not narrow.

Me too!

I used to have a crush on him, and would watch that show just because he was on it.

This is really hard--

Kurt--Neil--I just don't know what to do!

All in ALL

I really think that Kurt deserves this again.....

all were worthy, but he showed real character in this episode......

Call me a Kurtsie I guess... :)

Kurt

Modern Family is hilarious and Fish is heartbreaking, but Chris Colfer is both, and he pulls off every emotion with so much nuance that it's almost impossible to accept he's a 19 year old with next to no professional experience who Ryan Murphy just plucked out of a small town.

"My body is a rum chocolate souffle; if I don't warm it up right, it doesn't rise." That line, combined with all the Single Ladies dancing ("And, sneak attack, back to the ring.") and how he slapped Tina's bum (even more lewdly than he slapped Finn's during Push It) had me tearing up with laughter.

Then, of course, he went and nearly ripped my heart out with his coming out scene. Chris made Kurt so vulnerable that I just wanted to hold him, and then I cried when his dad actually did. Every line Chris delivered in that scene struck a major chord with me. Shaky and practically breathless, but ultimately more determined than afraid. It really came through brilliantly.

It was a tough choice

for me, between Kurt and NPH.  I settled on NPH, just for him being...well...real.

Hard choices!

This was a REALLY hard week to pick from!

I voted for Neil since he showed that it takes a talented gay man (or Hugh Jackman) to make the Emmys or any award show fun these days. We can do anything this screams. And noone got hurt or turned gay in the showin gof this award show...

Kudos though to Oliver, Kurt, and The Modern Family gays! They all were great!

If I bring out the devil in you, he was there all along!

kurt

he has got such great comedic timing. and his delivering those one liners are great...my coming out wasnt as dramatic as this, but then i was 25 and not in high school. still i felt for him and i think thats what makes great writing and great acting. the moisturizing part i was on the floor during....

No Emmy, but a crown!

So we're going to pick Kurt for this on a weekly basis now? Don't get me wrong, he's great, but he'll be around for a while.

This time it should be NPH's. Just look at the rave reviews he's getting - but he didn't get the Emmy! So he at least deserves a crown.

I voted for Neil

Since Chris just won last week, I voted for Neil. How often does an openly gay guy host the Emmys so spectacularly and win unanimous raves? ...

I just thought of this scenario for next year's Emmys: Chris and Neil facing off for Supporting Actor in a Comedy. Neil's overdue to win, but Colfer could triumph because he's got more emotional material.

Tie?

I want a four-way tie!

Tough call

It's the first time I've liked all four of the candidates and really think any would be a worthy winner.

Neil and Scott.

i know Neil was amazing as Emmys host, but i couldn't help and voted for Scott:)

Must we choose?   So

Must we choose?

So many great picks this week and such diversity!

My crush on NPH forbids me though to vote for anyone else but him. How awesome was it to watch him and David walk the red carpet?

Insideguy's picture

Superb acting abd total grace under pressure

And the Emmy goes to Chris Colfer, he is Kurt Hummel.  NPH can do no wrong.  Scott Evans is breath taking anyway you look at him.  And two men with comic timing like theirs reminds me of the grat Comedy teams that once ruled the roost as in Oliver and Hardy, Abbot and Costello, Martin and Lewis and even a few zings of Nichols and May.

Could you make this any harder?

That's all I am saying...

I voted for Scott

but i loved Kurt's coming out. Didn't watch Modern Family.(Ok,i saw the last ten minutes)and NPH was a blast on the Emmys. But,i'm an angst whore so Ollie won on that point. Next to Roman & Deniz on AWZ,Kish is my fave gay couple on TV right now.
