Battle of the Network Gays: October 1, 2009

Every week we pick the gays who we think have made the biggest splash in television (or pop culture in general) and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week. We'll announce the winner in Friday's BGWE column, and that champ will reign until a new set of challengers are introduced the following week to try to steal his title.

Last week, for the second week in a row, Glee's Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) won your hearts and took the crown. But he was somewhat on the back burner for the most recent episode of Glee - opening up the field to four new candidates, including a pair of proud gay das, two globetrotting gay brothers, a German politician, and a chart-topping singer - who doesn't even have an album to sell yet!

Check them out after the break, and vote for your favorite!

This week's contenders:

  • With the September 27th elections, German politician Guido Westerwelle, became the first openly gay leader of a major German party, and following tradiotion, will become Germany's Foreign Minister and Vice Chancellor. Oh, he's got a pretty cute boyfriend to boot. Some guys have all the luck.

  • Gay brothers, Sam & Dan McMillen nearly got eliminated early in The Amazing Race competition, when, through no fault of their own they couldn't catch a break on a Japanese game show. Fortunately, they survived their encounter with a "wasabi bomb" and managed to battle their way back to the front of the pack. We think these guys are going to be around for awhile!

  • The second epsiode of ABC mockumentary Modern Family had gay fathers Cameron (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) & Mitchell (Eric Stonestreet) attending "Toddler Town" with their adopted Vietnamese daughter. The characters (particularly Mitchell) may be stereotypes, but the clever writing and talented cast had us completely on their side.

  • With no actual title, no cover art, and no track listing, somehow Adam Lambert's theoretical first album (which at least we know will be released November 24th) currently sits at #1 on Amazon.com's sales chart. If anyone had doubts that this guy could sell albums, clearly they've been laid to rest.

Adam Lambert

Vote for your favorite by 10 PM EDT Today. And be sure to check back either in tomorrow's BGWE or on the blog to see which network gay our readers have carried to glory!

german politician

just for the sake of correctness. mr. Westerwelle is not the foreign minister yet. His questionable abilities of the lingua franca in politics (that is English; google it or have fun at youtube) rise doubts about his qualification. So here (in Germany) it is widely speculated that the post of a new "super minister" will be constructed to satisfy him, but keep him out of foreign politics. Furthermore there is the slight possibility of another political constellation. Westerwelle is the leader of the third largest party in Germany (about 15 percent), and a coalition between the christian party (34 percent) and the socialist party (23 percent) may be unrealistic, but is possible. Just to keep the image of Germany correct in the "foreign lands", Mr. Westerwelle is not regarded as first or second choice of foreign minister here in Germany, but for two reasons he is the "hot candidate" for foreign politics: first, he is the leader of the third biggest party ("neoliberals"), second, the vice-chancelor (and as co-position foreign minister) is the leader of the smaller coalition-partner (that means him, in this case). But - of interest to AE-readers - he managed to officially come out only after two other politicians (Klaus Wowereit, Ole von Beust, mayors of Berlin, Hamburg) came out (that is to say, he did it rather silently, if not to say shamefully), although his homosexuality seems to have been an open secret. His homosexuality is not openly considered a problem, but since Germany has economic connections with countries where this private detail is an issue (like the Arabian world), everything about him as being a foreign minister is at odds again. Since we in Germany do not know who our foreign minister will be, yet, please, do not accuse us of calling him one already. I do not want him to represent my country in the world, and hereby I deeply apologise to everyone who might feel offended by him as the German foreign minister. enough said. make your choice. this is a free vote.

Don´t take me wrong, but...

...how can you for God´s sakes vote for Adam while Germany might get a gay foreign minister! GO, GUIDO!!!

They are preserving the sanctity of marriage, so that two gay men who’ve been together for twenty-five years can’t get married, but a guy can still get drunk in Vegas and marry a hooker at the Elvis chapel! The sanctity of marriage is saved!

Wasn't Adam suppose to have been retired

from this catagory? Didn't he go into the Hall of Fame already? I thought I had seen the last of him here. I love how rules get changed around here. :/

Anyway I  had voted for the twins.
