Battle of the Network Gays: November 05. 2009

Every week we pick the gays who we think have made the biggest splash in television (or pop culture in general) and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week. We'll announce the winner on Friday, and that champ will reign until a new set of challengers are introduced the following week to try to steal his title.

Last week, we gave an honorary, in memoriam crown to "Friend of Dorothy (Zbornak)" Bea Arthur.  This week we've got four new contenders vying for the throne, including two from the same soap opera. Will they split their vote and open up a path to victory for either a flame-haired former ice skater, or a pair of globetrotting gay brothers?

Check them out after the break, and vote for your favorite!

  • Sam & Dan from The Amazing Race. It was either the golfing in their underwear or the fact that they came in first during this round of the race — no matter — the fraternal duo seemed particularly worthy of a nomination this week.

  • One Life to Live's Oliver Fish Llanview's gay cop (played by out actor Scott Evans) finally got his man this week when his big coming out on TV moment prompted....

  • Kyle Lewis (played by actor Brett Claywell) to have a change of heart and leave poor Nick at the altar. Both Oliver & Kyle had amazing moments this week, and we thought they deserved individual nominations. It will be interesting to see which character gets more votes.

  • Modern Family's Mitchell got to relive some of his childhood glory (sans sequined tights) when he and his sister performed their old ice skating routine in a parking lot. It was hilarious but also rather touching. Note: the childhood photos were actually of actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

Vote for your favorite by 10 PM EDT Today. And be sure to check back tomorrow on the blog to see which network gay our readers have carried to glory!

POLL HAS CLOSED. RESULTS POSTED ON THE BLOG FRIDAY.

It's ALL about Oliver Fish this week

Kyle is a deserving runner-up, but it was Fish's speech to the protesters and his coming-out that triggered all the subsequent events, including the final clinch with Kyle.  Definitely one of the best "awwwww" moments I've seen in awhile gay-wise.

However, if you haven't seen "Modern Family," the penultimate scene in the parking lot put me into laugh-out-loud hysterics.

Agreed about Modern Family

This show is quickly becoming my absolute favorite. It's so sharply witty, and Cam and Mitchell really are the heart of the show. It's hilarious and touching, without ever getting cloying. You're not the only one who went into a fit of hysterics with that final parking lot scene...

Thirded

I absolutely, positively love this show, and not just for our boys, although they are divine. Every single person in the cast is spot-on perfect. I cannot remember the last time I fell this hard for a show so quickly. Probably Will and Grace, and that was 11 years ago, and I seldom laughed as hard at that show as I do with this one (except for Dirty Little Pig Boy, probably their finest ep).

I am firmly aboard the Modern Family train. I just hope and pray they can keep up this level of hilarity.

Can't agree with you

Fish's speech to the protester was wonderful, and yes, it did trigger the subsequent events, but Kyle's decision to follow his heart and leave Nick at "the altar" took guts.  And his passionate and tearful declaration of love to Fish, was not only well acted...but so damn romantic I still can't get it out of my head.  Kyle was the one who really deserves the crown this week...at least in my opinion.

Modern Family

I have to go for Mitchell in Modern Family.  Not only was he great this week, he and his partner are the heart and soul of this excellent sitcom.

Unfair!

How can you make us pick between Kyle and Fish!?!? They should be up there together, just like the brothers. Neither of them would have been as good alone. They became, and truly were, a team this week, and splitting them up is just mean.

Since you forced me to pick between them, I went with Kyle, simply because of the amazing delivery of the speech he gave to Oliver when he left Nick. It made me get teary, and I don't get all choked up at TV shows very often (maybe once a year at most). Besides that, I think our gorgeous Fish is going to get tons more chances to win.

But you are evil, evil, EVIL! to make us choose between them.  There had better be a tie this week.

PS: I also loved Mitchell this week, and would have voted for him, but I am officially a squee'ing fanboy of Oliver and Kyle 4ever.

I need help. :-)

Yep, unfaiiir!

I was just about deciding to boycott the Battle of the Network Gays. Honestly! For exactly that reason - that it's unfair, because it's impossible to choose! But Joe, when you wrote that you hope for a tie, I was OK, let's see that happen! I hope it will be 50/50%!! It better be!

And I'm totally not telling who I voted for (partly, because I really haven't been able to decide yet................ oh, the agony!!).

What else is unfair...

Is that there isn't a category (and crown) for Gay Supporter of the Week.  If there were I'd nominate Roxy for unwavering support of Kyle and Fish...and her handling of the protesters at the wedding, and ALL those who supported us at the polls in Maine.  Even though we lost, we had a LOT of help and they deserve a crown of their own!!

Oliver Fish all the way

As much as I want to vote for Kyle....Oliver's speech to the protesters and just the sheer raw emotion he displayed on national TV makes him the winner this week.   But if Kyle comes in runner-up they both win.   I love this couple more than any of the other gay couples (few as they may be) on TV right now.

Can't decide

Sorry, I can't vote this week.  Too close between Kyle and Fish, and Mitchell's in the mix too.  I would feel uncomfortable choosing Kyle over Fish over Mitchell, or Fish over Kyle or Mitchell.

Oliver vs. Kyle?!

Oliver vs. Kyle?! How am I supposed to choose? I'm so torn!

Our very own Sophie's Choice...

Kyle

When all else fails, I will choose the one I find cuter.

Kyle

When he said all teary eyes and with that strained voice, 'All I keep thinking is that I'm standing next to the wrong man because all I want to do is share my love with you', I nearly lost it. It was so cute and so sweet, I had to pick him.

As much as I love Scott....

It's Kyle for me.  I totally feel like SE's won so many of these already, and Kyle's last one was ages ago (if I'm not mistaken....)

But for the reason that I cannot watch his admission of love to Oliver without turning into a wreck!  And then Kyle the morning after *sigh*!  He was aglow with newfound Oliver love.  While SE had this slight nervous energy going, BC infused so much happyface and flirt eyes and shiny smile in Kyle's face and voice and demeanor.  He was already a different man and the shift from Nick to Oliver couldn't have been more stark.

So, yep.  Kyle for me!

(I do LOOOOOVE Mitchell.  He was fab this week!)

Scott, because...

...his portrayal of Oliver Fish is just too real for me... Let's just say, been there, done that, wish I'm as courageous and humble as his character...

Is the whole childhood ice

Is the whole childhood ice skating photo real? Or did they just paste Jesse's head onto the body of another kid?
