News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Battle of the Network Gays: August 13, 2009

Every week we pick the gays who we think have made the biggest splash in television and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week. We'll announce the winner on Friday's BGWE column, and that champ will reign until a new set of challengers are introduced the following week to try to steal his title.

Last week, OLTL bad boy Kyle Lewis won the crown handily with 50% of the vote. But he didn't have much to do this week, and thus we thought it only fair to leave him out of contention this round, giving his OLTL castmate Oliver Fish and three other worthy contenders a shot at the crown.

Check them out after the break, and vote for your favorite!

This week's contenders:

  • Openly gay dance troupe Vogue Evolution for wowing the crowd on America's Best Dance Crew. (Check out our interview with them here.)
  • Miss J. Alexander, for winning the Choice Fab-u-lous Award (love that!) at the Teen Choice Awards. He was up against Carson Kressley, Perez Hilton, Rex Lee, and Ugly Betty's Michael Urie. Said Miss J upon winning: ''I would like to thank every single gay, transgendered, bisexual, heterosexual teenager throughout the nation. This award is going to be shared by me with you and it makes all of you as fierce as me. Bam!"

  • Finally we have Oliver Fish, who dug an even deeper hole of denial for himself today on One Life to Live by bedding his beard girlfriend Layla (who deserves better) despite flashing back to that kiss with Kyle.

Vote for your favorite by 10 PM EDT Today. And be sure to check back for tomorrow's BGWE column to see which network gay our readers have carried to glory!

Wow

This must be the first time that someone is nominated for gay of the week for having straight sex. Weird

Yes, that's why I'm voting for Miss J

I'm sure Oliver Fish will have better weeks in which to win.

Fish versus Scott

I would have voted for Scott Evans the actor but not Oliver Fish the character (yet).

Miss J all the way.  This vote is all teens and it's great they chose Miss J one of the few people involved in that show  and on that team besides Tyra who actually seems to care about the models as individuals and doesn't just make fun of them.  Yeah it's just a show about model wannabes but they are real young women who need guidence and he always seems to give them good feedback and greet them with a big heart.  Plus he's Fab!

Right now

I have the same problem with Oliver that i had with Noah at the begining of the Nuke storyline. I really dislike the characters, i don't really like the acting (even when in the case of Scott is getting better), but as i read interviews with the actors before and they seem such a nice guys, i can't be harsh on them.

But by the spoilers i read, i think it will pass a lot of time till i really like or care for Fish, i don't even empathise with his struggle. On the opposite, for me it's quite easy empathise with Kyle (i really like the Brett's acting right now) even he is not exactly a role model

Fish and Noah versus Scott and Jake

I find it hard to like a character if I resent the character's actions and I can't understand  or empathise with their reasoning particularly when it comes to coming out stories.

Watching actors perform other roles helps me separate the actor from the character and I think Jake and Scott have both done well in their cameo roles on other shows with characters that were very different from Noah or Oliver.

I relate to Noah most out of all of the characters.  I always understands why he does what he does even when I'm not happy with he decision.  I always prefer the repressed, introverted characters. I love Jake's interpretation of Noah and it rings true to me (everyone hates him but it's a subjective thing)

I like Scott's performance of Oliver as well (I think it's spot on for who Fish is supposed to be).  I just have no patience or empathy for the character.  I'm waiting for him to come clean, make amends and get on with the "being gay" .

I'm looking forward to Oliver Fish's journey of self-acceptance.  I just think he'll be "Gay of the Week" material for some time to come.

there some things

In both storylines that are almost the same, but in the case of Noah/Fish, even with the similarities, the differences are great, and are in Noah's favour.

First of all the age, Noah was a teen, Oliver is an adult, and even both use a girl as a beard, the way Oliver treat Kyle is far worse than the way Noah treat luke. First of all when Noah start dating Maddie he didn't even know that Luke was gay, and he keep lying because of his father pressure.

Right now, Fish don't have any reason to lie or have a beard, he is using Layla only to feel integrated with the other cops. He knows he is gay, he had a relationship before, but he choose to lie a girl, even when nobody's is pressuring him (maybe when his parents arrive this change).

What i find curious is even today, there are a lot of people who don't forgive Noah for dating Maddie, and with Oliver, who is doing far worse, is candiate to gay of the week for bedding a girl, for me that don't have any sense

Lol, for a second there I

Lol, for a second there I thought you were mocking Peter Sprigg's recent article criticizing Harvey Milk being awarded the Medal of Honor for "having sex with men." Then I realized you were just talking about Fish..

Charles Perez

Well, I had to vote for Charles Perez. He's a real herofor choosing his partner and their future family over his job.

He's not a hero...

He's a smuck who's been living in the closet and only when he's ousted for being gay (terrible though it is) is when he started waving the rainbow. I support him in the fact he shouldn't have been fired or demoted for being gay, but at the same time, he's not a hero. He's a closet case who got caught.

BTW...

My vote went to Miss J.

Did you read it?

Did you read the article? He was out to his superiors and coworkers. It was only when he talked about wanting to start a family and the higher-ups were concerned about how out he was and that it was becoming known in the market that they pushed him to a weekend spot and he eventually sued and was fired.

Yeah, I thought Charles...

...has been out for almost 2 decades now--isn't he the guy that dated a gay Real World contestant in the first season of the show?

I guess you can be out, but not OUT!

Yeah that was a rather knee-jerk reaction

of someone who probably didn't bother to read the specifics.

Perez

It's not that he wasn't out, it was that it became an issue for the station. That's why he's got my vote. Read the article I love his quote on what is considered news. That really should be an issue with all media.
