Battle of the Network Gays: August 6, 2009

Every week we pick the gays who we think have made the biggest splash in television and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week. We'll announce the winner on Monday, and that champ will reign until a new set of challengers are introduced the following week to try to steal his title.

Last week, the incomparable Kathy Griffin took the crown, this despite being only an honorary gay. This week's challengers all have admirable claims to the throne and we suspect the vote is going to be close.

Check them out, and vote for your favorite!

This week's contenders:

Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) of One Life to Live. Why? After weeks of privately pining for his closeted college sweetheart, this week (today in fact) Kyle will finally get his guy. For a kiss, anyway!

The wait is over: Kyle finally plants one on Fish

Stephen Hampton. Why? The out gay Mormon was the only male contestant on season 2 of Paris Hilton's BFF, and he made it all the way to the top three before getting eliminated last week. He received a battle of the network gays nomination last week for that accomplishment, but he didn't win and we thought we'd heard the last of him. Imagine everyone's surprise in this week's BFF finale, when Paris Hilton announces she made a mistake eliminating Stephen - and crowns him her BFF!

Fate (and Paris Hilton) can be so fickle.

Stephen Hampton

Griffin (Brando Eaton) who this week made his grand entrance as a gay best friend and sidekick on ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Why? See photo below.

Oliver Fish (Scott Evans) from One Life to Live. It's sort of ironic, the out gay actor playing the tortured, closeted half of OLTL's much-anticipated gay couple. We're curious who will prove more popular in this Battle of the Network Gays: Kyle or Fish?

Vote for your favorite by 11 PM EDT Sunday. And be sure to check back Monday on the blog to see which network gay our readers have carried to glory!

Kyle FTW!

Yes, Scott Evans marvelously portrayed Fish's desperation to hold on to a "straight ideal"--his faltering voice and tears in his eyes were heartbreaking.

But Brett Claywell as Kyle has to win: his fierce, unashamed love for Fish and determination to win him back was simply breathtaking to watch. There's no other choice, imho.

This is cruel

This is so cruel! I wanna vote for both Brett and Scott.

I have no idea who it's going to be.. I'll decide after I've seen today's Kish!

I like

that the straight actor plays the openly gay character and the openly gay actor plays the closeted one. But it's hard to choose

correction:

Stephen wasn't the only male contestant on BFF.  there were two others (the other two were straight).

i only watched it that one time, i swear.

Oliver all the way

I gotta admit it's a tough choice between Kyle and Oliver.  They both did a great job and I won't mind a bit if they tie.  But I had to vote for Oliver.  I know we're voting for the "character" but I can't help but cast the vote for Scott Evans as well.  The real gay guy is going to get my vote, all other things being equal.

Kyle vs. Fish

Why do "Janto" get to run together but Kish have to splt their vote?  I suspect gerrymadering.

Awwww!

No "Kish" as a single nominee? Boo! Screw Per...uh...Paris Hilton and her BFF search and i don't watch ABC Family but he's cute.

Well you have totally missed out.

Not only on the new gay guy but also on Ricky and the gay couple who tried to adopt the totally lame mother of Ricky's child.

Instatement of couples clause

Just for the hell of it, I think we should make it so that T.V. power couples get one nomination slot unless only one of them appear on screen during the week.  Doesn't really makes a difference seeing as this is just a sh*ts and giggles kind of game, but it would at least open a spot to recognize a lesser known gay entity that was on the boob tube during the week.  Just a thought...

Voting

I don't really much care which way it goes, but it would be nice if there were a consistent policy.  Luke and Noah have gone head to head before, so it seems like separate nominations are the (perhaps subconscious) standing policy, with Janto being the exception.

I can't help but suspect that Janto were put together to combine the votes and make it an even more massive shutout, to fuel the anti-RTD campaign.

i just watched the kish scene again..

as much as i kept praising (and obsessing) brett claywell for his performance even when i was just watching the previews, after watching the ep today for the 100th time i think Scott Evans did a tremendous job with the character Oliver.  While both actors have been showing excellence in their field, Scott was really a revelation in that episode.  But then again - we are voting for the character - so Kyle Lewis, hands down, is the best gay of the week.

After watching it so many times, the two are fast becoming a fictional gay power couple (after only a few episodes since June).  They're up there with Ollian and Janto.   But for this week - the character Kyle Lewis should take the crown.
