Battle of the Network Gays: September 10, 2009

Every week we pick the gays who we think have made the biggest splash in television and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week. We'll announce the winner in Friday's BGWE column, and that champ will reign until a new set of challengers are introduced the following week to try to steal his title.

Last week Oliver Fish from One Life to Live took the crown for his angsty coming out scene. But this week he's been busy on the periphery with police work, and a slew of reality show personalities have crowded out the field: We've got a gay Idol finalist and his groom, a harried Project Runway contestant, the most successful gay Big Brother housemate ever, and a guy who literally "danced his ass off" (well, at least 90 pounds of it).

Check them out after the break, and vote for your favorite!

This week's contenders:

  • Project Runway's Ra'mon-Lawrence Coleman. Last Thursday's episode had him unfortunately paired with that charming though far-out-of-his-depth sewing slacker, Mitchell. It looked like Mitchell was going to drag them both down to defeat, but somehow at the last minute Ra'mon managed to artfully staple a girl in a swath of stained neoprene. The judges were so crazy about the look they gave Ra'mon the win. And Mitchell the boot.
Project Runway's Mitchell (left) self destructs and nearly takes Ra'mon with him.
  • Big Brother's Kevin has now officially gone further on the show than any other gay housemate before him (and that includes Season 3's Marcellas Reynolds!)
  • On Monday the Oxygen network aired the reunion special to their summer dance/weigt-loss series, Dance Your Ass Off. This year's winner, Ruben, lost the most, dropping 90 pounds! You can check out our interview with Ruben here
  • First season American Idol finalist Jim Verraros and his partner Bill Brennan tied the knot in a lavish wedding last weekend in Chicago. Congrats to the happy couple, and more of their wedding photos here.

Jim and Bill

It's always inspiring to see two individuals (gay or straight) who obviously love each other very much commit to spending the rest of their lives together.

This week they represent where we all want to be one day, married to the man we love.

 30 days btw...

Kevin ...UGH

Kevin may have made it further than any other gay man on Big Brother.  I just wish he was more likeable to the general public.  He is already being villified, and probally rightly so, for being deceitful, backstabbing, and a cheater.  People are complaining on other blogs about him and Natalie cheating in the last competition.

I realize he was likely playing a role to some existent and I personally have no problem with him, I just wish he was a better representative of gay men but then again maybe it is a good sign that people seem to be hating his actions but able to seperate his sexuality from the equation.

I have to ask, though...

is there a double-standard at work, here?

I'm not directing the accusation at you but at the general Big Brother audience that's vilifying Kevin. Plenty of Big Brother competitors have been praised for their deceitfulness and backstabbing. Danielle talked around the double standard of Big Brother audiences (and juries) last night when she commented about how women are viewed -- when Will schemes he's good at playing the game but when a women schemes her way to the final two, it reveals a character flaw. It'd make sense to see the same double-standard being applied to gay men.

I've missed some episodes in the middle of this season, but I haven't seen Kevin do anything that appalls me in Big Brother terms... then again, after seeing Dick get "but if he does it for his child, it's okay" edit and Brandon's racist slurs getting edited out (which had the effect of making Lydia and Chima look like oversensitive race-card players), the line is pretty far on this show.

NOT KEVIN!!

I wanted to like Kevin.  He was obviously cast as the stereotypical network idea of a gay man, and he's been playing the role predictably.  Camping it up....  making risque jokes about wanting to be handcuffed...  lusting after the macho straight men in the cast.  We've all seen this character before and I don't even blame him for it.

But why does he have to show such insensitivity to others, especially the outcasts?  He paired up with the most horrid girl, a true sociopath, and together they have enjoyed tormenting the most sensitive members of the group.

Sorry Kevin, you're not getting my vote.  Nobody likes a bully.

I don't think Kevin is that bad...

I actually quite enjoy his witty banter. Sure he's said dumb catty things, but he's just trying to uphold his appearance for Natalie's sake. He's only said these comments to her to make her feel secure in their alliance. But if watch his diary room sessions, he's obviously self aware of all the (Nata)Lie's and has even said that he plans to take Jordan to the end, over that "That Biznatch". He's really only alligned with Natalie because of circumstance. Also, He did stand up for Michelle and Jordan when Rat Ronnie was bullying them. But if you really assess his gameplay, you'll see that he's won more competitions than most HG's this year, avoided major conflicts, and has played a really good (and very sneaky) game. Although I am still really upset that he didn't veto save my fav Michelle off the block.

That being said, I voted for Jim and his new husband. I loved the Eating Out movies. CONGRATS!
