News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Brad Pitt knows how to give good interview.

There's an art to giving interviews. You have to provide something personal and interesting during the exchange, something you haven't shared before. But at the same time you have to avoid the dreaded TMI (Too Much Information) navelgazing that so many celebrities seem to fall into (I'm talkin' to you Megan Fox!).

Some celebrities are just plain awful at this balancing act. Every time you read a quote from them you wind up liking them less. But from my perspective, no one is a better interviewee than Brad Pitt. I wouldn't consider myself a fan of the actor exactly, but I always look forward to his interviews.

This Sunday's PARADE magazine will include a lengthy interview with Pitt and already excerpts are leaking out. In it, he touches on gay marriage, and gay parenting - expanding on some of his earlier pro-gay comments.

After the break, excerpts from the upcoming Parade article, as well as a surprisingly frank quote from a recent German interview. You might be a bit surprised (as I was) by Pitt's religious views!

Pitt on why he won't marry Angelina Jolie:
"I have love in my life, a soul mate--absolutely. When someone asked me why Angie and I don't get married, I replied, 'Maybe we'll get married when it's legal for everyone else.' I stand by that, although I took a lot of flak for saying it--hate mail from religious groups. I believe everyone should have the same rights. They say gay marriage ruins families and hurts kids. Well, I've had the privilege of seeing my gay friends being parents and watching their kids grow up in a loving environment."

On wanting what's best for his children:
"Would it bother me if a child of mine turns out to be gay? No, not one bit. Listen, I want my kids to live the lives they want to live. I want them to be fulfilled. I hope I teach my kids to be who they really are."

On everyone's right to love.
"Man, I resent people telling others how to live! It drives me mental! Just the other night, I heard this TV reverend say that Angie and I were setting a bad example because we were living out of wedlock, and people should not be duped by us! It made me laugh. What damn right does anyone have to tell someone else how to live if they're not hurting anyone? How many times do you think real love comes to someone in a lifetime? If you're lucky, maybe two or three."

The full PARADE interview will be on newstands this Sunday.

In July, Pitt spoke with Germany's BILD magazine while promoting his new movie, Inglorious Basterds. The brief interview didn't touch on gay rights issues, but the actor was unusually frank about his religious views:

BILD: Do you believe in God?
Brad Pitt: “No, no, no!”

BILD: Is your soul spiritual?
Brad Pitt: “No, no, no! I’m probably 20 per cent atheist and 80 per cent agnostic. I don’t think anyone really knows. You’ll either find out or not when you get there, until then there’s no point thinking about it.

Pitt's non-believer status may not be all that uncommon, but the fact that he didn't duck the question is. It's quite rare for a public figure to own up to not being a believer. Whether or not you share Pitt's views on the afterlife, his honesty is pretty damn refreshing.

I love this guy

I love it when I find someone in Hollywood is not one of those sycophants who butter up the general public

He just says what he wants in a very matter-of-fact sort of way and is done with it

I'm glad he and Angelina are considered role models for young people. We need that since we have all sorts of "other idols" promoting religiosity or pretending to be virgins

p.s: when I read "religious views" I imagined the worst, like born-again or morman. I love that he's agnostic and love the fact that he's upfront about it..

Gotta Respect Them

I'm no huge fan of Brad or Angelina, but I have to respect them for their stance about not getting married until gay couples can legally marry. I am a woman engaged to a man, but we have also agreed that we will not marry until gay marriage is legal in our state (New York). My fiance and I take some flak from our families and they don't really understand our position, but I can't imagine the sort of pressure this celebrity couple must face, especially since they have kids.

Very true

It is just very rare that major A-list stars like Brad Pitt to openly admit being an atheist/agnostic. I can`t really say that I`m a fan of his acting, but after reading this, I sure have a lot of respect for him as a person.

I do wonder how many people here on AE consider themselves as no-believers though. I grew up in China so me and most of my friends back there are atheists, with a few considering themselves as "casual" buddhist.

Count me in

I'm an AE reader and an atheist.  I remember in my first year philosophy course the professor, who was a Catholic priest, saying that he had more respect for atheists than agnostics because they, at least, were taking a stand.  I wasn't raised in a particular religion although my mom did make us say our prayers when we were quite young.  I took a course on Death and Dying and we had to do a survey about our attitudes and then have our parents take the same survey to see how many of our attitudes came from our family.  I was surprised to learn that my mom believed in heaven. Religion and all the ideas related to it were not discussed -- not because we avoided them but because it was never part of our life.   If you're doing a survey of AE readers, though, you'd probably find a big difference based on geography.  I'm Canadian and we're, in general, less overtly religious than many Americans.

The only part of the

The only part of the interview that surprised me was his use of the word "mental", which, as far as I know is a British thing.

While I never understood why

While I never understood why anyone found Brad Pitt attractive, I must say that he easily makes my VERY selectivly short list of 'Most Respected Celebrities.'  This is obviously a guy who is accustomed to actually thinking as opposed to following whatever rabid dogma happened to bite him first.

Oh and Whitetee, you can count me in among the AE athiests.  :)

Are you sure this is not an Angelina Jolie Interview? Sure sounds like stuff she's already said. LoL

Drives me mental!

Ha! I love that expression.

I like Brad Pitt as an actor - I'm not his biggest fan, but I like him! I'm neutral vis-à-vis Angelina Jolie. I think that their adopting children is pretty wonderful! I like his answers to the questions! Definitely!

I don't know to compare the US and Europe, but I have among my friends people who believe in God, others who don't. It rarely is, but when it is a topic of discussion, it's never a big deal (except in one case in my life, but it's too long to discuss here).

I have been and go to temples, synagogues, mosques, churches, have been three-people Gospel singer group at a Jewish/Catholic friends wedding in the US, I have been guest in a Catholic wedding in Kosovo (Muslim mostly) and a Catholic/Muslim engagement reception in Jerusalem etc. I think it's fantastic, bloody interesting and educational. I have a tatoo (done 10 years ago in Tel Aviv no less!) symbolising all 5 biggest Religions. I was raised kind of Protestant, but my (German) mother did that mainly because she didn't want her children to stand out even more (I was the only kid in my class with divorced parents at the time!). My father is Sicilian Catholic but stopped going to church when he left Sicily to move to Belgium (40+ years ago) and he is remarried to a Muslim woman from Morocco.

All this to say that I'm like Brad Pitt. I had never put it into percentages, but I'd say I'm 20% atheist and 80% agnostic like him.

BILD

It should be noted that BILD is notorious for horrifically bad journalism. I would not be surprised if they made up the whole thing, because they needed a few inches in the celeb section.

Except for his earlier work Thelma and Louis, Seven and

12 Monkey, I have not paid attention to his latest work . Not a fan of his or Angelina Jolie. However, the humanitarian work they are doing far exceeds many of their peers and regular joe like me. For that I do tip my hat to them.

Another reason to love Brad Pitt

I only like some of his movies, like Seven and The Mexican (yes, yes, awful movie, but it was funny, and I liked it!). But when it comes to who he is as a person.. I think he might be the actor in Hollywood I look up to the most. He and Angelina do wonderful humanitarian work, and I like the fact that they have their views, and are not afraid to express them. I love that he doesn't care what the religious fanatics think about him. He is who he is, and has his own views, and that's cool!

We need more straight allies like him. Straight people who support LGBT issues and who aren't afraid to speak up. I think it's wonderful!

And yes, I'm one of those agnostic/atheist people too.

Inspiring words

Pitt gave some great answers here. It was interesting to read about his religious views. Personally I was raised to believe in God, but my beliefs have become increasingly secular over the years. In any case, I do not want to believe in a God who creates people a certain way (i.e. gay), and then claims that they are living in sin. This is one of the main reasons that I find it very hard to be religious.

Kudos Pitt

For starters its great to see that Brad Pitt does not change what he really thinks to please the media and public. I think thats its great that he stands by what he thinks knowing that he will recieve some unpleased replies for those who strongly disagree with him. Its great that he also supports gays and the belief that we should have the right to get married and adopt children. I also find it amazing that he is not limiting himself to what many people think of him and that he wants to encourage his own children to be who they are regardless of what people may think of them. Not do I just think that he is a great actor but an amazing father!

Great guy

Judging from the comments here, I guess I am in minority in that I have been a fan of Brad Pitt's acting long before I found out about his political and social work. He is one of the very few actors, imho, who are not afraid to pick "risky" or unusual roles, which resulted in some of my favourite movies, such as Fight Club, Snatch or 12 Monkeys.

That on top of that, he also holds (and is open about) such views is just an icing on the cake.

One of the living Hollywood actors I most respect.

pretty is as pretty does

Brad is beautiful inside and out.  I adore him.  Unfortunately I never have liked any of his movies.  But his interviews reveal a very good-hearted and dear man.

Maybe if he did a gay role I would  finally be interested in one of his movies.

Methinks I'm In Love

I've always liked Brad Pitt well enough, enjoyed the movies I've seen him in, but never really considered myself a fan.  But as the parent of a gay child and as a lifelong non-theist, I've gotta say I'm impressed with his open heart, his open mind, and his honesty.  Dude's got balls....

Brad Pitt

Reasons I love Brad Pitt:

-his stance on gay marriage

-having the courage to not get married until everyone legally can

-being a good father and part of a loving family (I really like him and Angelina)

-his humanitarian efforts (building eco-friendly houses after Katrina)

-his career choices (Fight Club, Troy, Benjamin Button, etc)

-his smoking hot good looks

Need I say more? He's one of the few celebrities I actually respect, along with Angelina and Leonardo DiCaprio. They actually DO something with their power, which is amazing.
