Desperate Housewives pimps out Andrew
After all the sturm and drang of the tornado that hit on the
December 2nd episode, Wisteria
Lane has been awfully quiet. The writer’s strike
will probably cut short the current season to ten episodes, which is too bad
because Marc Cherry said in a pre-strike
interview that this season viewers would be seeing much more of gay teen Andrew Van
De Kamp (Shawn Pyfrom). Just our luck, right? *** Spoilers ahead…. *** After the tornado demolished their home, Bree and family are staying with Susan. Bree finds out about a much-in-demand gay contractor named Walter Bierbitch and, desperate to get her house quickly rebuilt, she tries to play matchmaker between her son and Bierbitch.
I don’t know about this storyline – from the press stills released by ABC, the contractor (played by character actor J.C. Mackenzie) looks to be in his mid-forties. That seems way too old for Andrew.
If Bree really needs to pimp out family members to get her house rebuilt, she should be fronting someone more age-appropriate – like her husband Orson (Kyle MacLachlan).

No arguments from me
I don't get why guys in their 40's would go after somebody in their late teens. For me anybody under 35 is too young! There is a lot to be said for going with someone who has had as many life experiences as I have had. Dating someone who is worried about acne, what they want to be when they grow up, and thinking it is cool to get plastered at a party is just too bizarre for words.

DH goes the anti-gay route again
Is there any bigger stereotype to push than to have a middle-aged gay man to want to date an 18 year old boy? And how pathetic is it that this contractor would even go along with this? Hooking up with some boy he barely knows? A successful, attractive gay man can find men much more attractive and age-appropriate than some sociopath with an ugly shaved head.
Time after time, DH avoids ANY possibility of shining a positive light on gay men or their lives. Instead, it is once again gay men as negative, unhealthy, pathetic.
I agree it is a stereotype
but it is one that you see in the straight community as well. I have known of several situations where a middle-aged man leaves his wife for a much younger (talking about 20+ age difference) woman to start a new family.

Is it really anti-gay or are
Is it really anti-gay or are you just sore over the gay predator stereotype? Andrew's already been with at least one older guy, his mom's ex-boyfriend. No idea who his clients were when he was on the street.
Just remember Monica was 22 and Bill was over 50.
Nice subtle dig, duckie...
Wrong, Dave.
Get a grip! The topic was about age appropriate relationships. Bill and Monica happened to be a very high profile example of age disparity.
As I pointed out Andrew's been into older guys before. On camera, only Justin (Ryan Carnes) has been his age.
My question was whether people are freaking out here because they're afraid this plays into a gay men as predators of the young stereotype, because of traditional values about age and dating, so ick on Bill and Monica age difference too or examine your own hypocrisy, or maybe your just bent over Mark Cherry's politics.
What else is new?
Don't forget...
...what the name of this show is. *Desperate* housewives. I think that even as utterly creepy as trying to match up your young son with a forty something guy just to get your house built is in keeping with the idea of the show. How desperate could you possibly get? This isn't "The Happiest Housewives on Wisteria Lane". It could just has easily been someone's daughter getting matched to a straight contractor. At least they are giving the story to Andrew instead. And no one would accuse them of trying to make straight guys in their forties seem pathetic if it had been the 18 year old daughter. It would just be a sick little night time soap.
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.
It's a double standard
Let's wait and see...
I'm willing to give Marc Cherry the benefit of the doubt until the episode actually shows... I think if it's done well, it will be more of a poor reflection on Bree (and her character's narrowmindedness and inability to really understand her son). I've been somewhat impressed with Andrew recently, and I doubt he will really let himself get 'pimped' out. Bree and Orson are the ones who are thinking this stereotype, and I expect the show to put them in their place for going thie route.
We'll see...
If the spoilers are true, it's not that good...
Supposedly, Andrew starts going out with this guy, and then Susan introduces him to a gay man she knows. Andrew then starts being with him as well, and it ruins his relationship with the contractor. So we get gay men as promiscuous, age-inappropriate, and ultimately, unhappy.
Nice.
Should be interesting to see how it plays out...
Why are there always rules?
People gotta think it's not out of the realm of possibility 4 Bree. After all Andrew once slept with an older guy she was dating 4 revenge. I thought it was a bigger deal when her daughter Danielle dated her high school teacher 4 the simple fact that she was a minor. But if a 19 year-old wants 2 go with someone in their 40's I say let 'em. It's fine 4 hooking-up, but as far as relationships go they better beware. Especially the older of the pair before wasting any more time on someone they could B spending with someone else. When I was in my early 20's I had a thing 4 this guy twenty years older. I never told him (cuz he was spoken 4) so I don't know how it would have played out. We used 2 have great conversations so I like 2 think it could have worked, but something I think about now is that today he'd be in his 50's and would I want 2 be with someone in their 50's? As far as Desperate Housewives goes, I'm sure the way they execute the storyline will be funny as hell. I say "People who've been crying around about gay-stereotypes, well here's something fresh!" It's just entertainment after all.
Amen to that!
I just turned 38, and the surprise of my life is how young men are seeking me out as potential dating material--in the past year, I've dated an 21 year old and a 25 year old, and now I have an 18 year old guy asking me out! At first I resisted--what would we have in common? wouldn't he leave me for somebody closer to his own age? etc.--but since guys my age don't seem to be interested in me, what the heck, I'm thinking, why not, let's see where it goes. After all, Hadrian had his Antinous....
Good luck
with your relationship, in my situation being HIV+ I wouldn't have bothered. Even my current partner I initially thought might be too young (about 10 year spread).
You are right though when you get into your mid to late 30's a lot of guys are either taken, alcoholics, or still chasing guys much younger! I finally found someone when I was 37, but I looked younger than that and my partner liked "manly men" couldn't understand why people find guys in their early 20's attractive, thinks they look like boys!

Love Andrew VanderKamp
I like that Andrew is so deliciously evil and not at all an effeminate stereotype. Because I believe in full equality I'm glad that the gay characters are just as screwed up as everyone else. This show is too much fun. Settle the strike, bitches!
Isn't Andrew the ultimate stereotype?
According to the show, he was turned gay because he had a bad mother. He is presented as an amoral, cruel person. He was a male hustler. He has never had a healthy relationship. He is all alone and has nothing to do.
I would take an effeminate gay man over this mess.
I must admit
I have always had a sneaking liking for the character, I voted for him as one of my 10 favourite gay characters. People gotta remember he is a teenager so he is going to have a lot of issues especially with a mother like Bree. Let's face it very few of us are at our finest between the ages of 13 and 17 (I certainly wasn't). I like the way his character is evolving now, he is getting out on his own, he is making up with his mother, etc.. I just wish they would have picked somebody better looking and younger to go out with. Then again this show rarely wants to portray people as well-adjusted, it is a satire on the suburban lifestyle after all.

Damn, they could have
Damn, they could have atleast given Andrew an actual hot guy.
Whatever happened to Justin? He was soo hot!
I agree with Gabriella.
They should bring back Justin.I liked when Andrew was with him.You know, for better, or for worse, i'm glad that Marc Cherry tries to make gay people a part of the scenery. Most shows don't even bother, but it would be nice if it weren't "for worse" and they weren't just "part of the scenery" so much. That's what the new gay couple have become.....scenery.They're not really weaved into the show the way everyone else is.Other characters moved to Wisteria lane because of deep dark secrets like affairs and killing someone, but not them. They just didn't like living in the city.that's it.*yawn*
I like Andrew just fine.I don't really mind that he's a little evil.....well was evil, anyway, but we see so little of him.He finally gets some more screen time, and this is what they give us?The fact that this show is headed by a gay man is kind of disappointing. It seems just like any other show where any gay characters are just there to add a little color to a straight world as opposed to Andrew having a storyline of his own where, like everyone else, he's having relationship drama.....with Justin.
If my friend watched this
If my friend watched this certain episode of DH I seriously doubt she'd be calling me and asking me if I were like that. At the end of the day, it is just a TV show. And yeah, TV shows can shape people's perceptions on things but DH? I think not.
Pimping the Wrong Family Member
"If Bree really needs to pimp out family members to get her house rebuilt, she should be fronting someone more age-appropriate – like her husband Orson..."
not only more age appropriate - but so much hotter! :P
