Gale Harold moves to Wisteria Lane
Gale Harold fans rejoice. The sexy and very popular star of Queer as Folk will be turning up on the small screen again on the May 18th finale of Desperate Housewives. According to TV Guide's Michael Ausiello he'll be playing "a quick-witted, charming and buttoned-down suburbanite. Picture a young Jack Lemmon, only without a cross-dressing Tony Curtis dragging him down." Hmm. Nothing about Gale Harold reminds me in the least of Jack Lemmon. I guess we'll have to wait and see how this pans out. While Harold's May 18th turn on Desperate Housewives' is billed as a guest appearance, there are rumors that his character will have a central role in next season's big mystery.

best. news. ever
maybe DH will be good again next year if Gale's in it
Gale Harold vs. Jack Lemmon
Um, ok. A bland, charisma-free "stud" in no way compares to one of the most charismatic and incredibly talented actors in cinema history.

Don't See the Appeal...
Gale Harold sexy? You gotta be kidding!
O.K., I'm pretty flexible when you make comments about certain stars being sexy, but Gale Harold? PULEEZE...
Having to sit through five years of QAF watching this bland, transparent so-called actor trying to be the hottest thing on the planet that everyone wanted was a fantasy of someone on serious drugs! Myself and a lot of my friends couldn't see him being the stud that this show projected. There were far hotter men in the cast that eclipsed this dud. Most of QAF I enjoyed, but watching Ms. Brian Kenny being the belle of the ball at Babylon every night was ridiculous.
Apparently he thought so too because after QAF's run, he was one of the costars in a fall series and he got fired for playing the diva. Those five years went to his pretty little head and he ended up unemployed. He may suffer the same fate on Desperate Housewives. Maybe they should have told him there are plenty of divas already on the show before they hired him!
haha
it sort of amuses me when others don't see him as hot, etc...because he is one man i would go to bed with in a heartbeat...my brother, also gay, does not see it...he thought justin was the hot one. ah, we had many a fight over that. good times.
Actually none of the stars of QAF...
Actually none of the regular cast members of QAF we thought were what you would call hot. Justin came off frequently as too much of a gurl. Michael was too dumb to be gay. Emmett was the queen of QAF, not sexy at all. Ted was even more bland and transparent than Brian. Dr. David from the 1st season (Chris Potter) was totally hot, but he left. Ben (Robert Gant) was on again, off again hot.
Most of the sexual tricks that passed thru Babylon were a helluva lot hotter than the regular cast members. We always wondered how in the hell Gale Harold got the role of Brian because he sure wasn't all that! Everybody supposedly wanting to bed Brian had to be some fantasy dream of the producers.
I agree!
I totally agree with you!! I never liked Ted or Justin or Michael much. In all of the gay couples on QAF there was always one of the two that bugged me for some reason and this kind of ruined the whole attraction. I did like Brian and Emmett, but with limitations. Danny, too true, the hottest of them all was Chris Potter!!! Also Robert Gant did get my vote, but he was with Michael and eew, too whiny at times!
The one couple that I did enjoy was Emmett and Drew Boyd. Well, most of the times.
Outside of QAF it is the same. There is always one of the couple that is bothering me. Where it is/was not the case is Ennis and Jack, Christian and Olli, Zach and Bart (Making Love), Will and Vince (Will & Grace), Chris and Toby (Oz) and a few other French and UK couples.

Liz you are a breath of fresh air :- )
You are not the only one who finds him attractive as he did not reach the top last years AE faves based on ballot stuffing. I actually think that he's quite attractive and a pretty good actor to boot.
I can't wait to seem him in DH as the show needs to amp up its male cast members, who in my opinion are way too vanilla. Mike the plumber does nothing for me, but Gale? ..... Maybe.

aw, thanks....*flattered*
flattery will get you far, my friend. :-)
but yeah...polar emotions indeed....I even knew some straight guys in high school who would tell me "I'm not like that, but man.....If i were like that, i'd go for him"
whenever i talk (more like gush like a schoolgirl) about gale, people have to repeatedly ask me "liz, you sure you're not into guys, cuz damn..." - - gale brings out a very heterosexual side of me. Don't know what it is about him...but he's got something going on.

Gale Harold's Professionalism is just fine, bud
There isn't the slightest evidence in the world that Gale Harold was ever "fired for playing the diva" other than a whispering campaign by Fox's minions long after the decision to replace him was made and the firestorm of public reaction had long been raging. It was a flimsy excuse then, and it's a flimsy excuse now.
Without a whisper of any unprofessionalism, Gale Harold starred for 5 years on a cable series, did guest appearances (almost all of them two-episode arcs) on some of the most popular and/or distinguished series (Law & Order: SVU; Deadwood; The Unit; Grey's Anatomy; Street Time); did a movie of the week, two Off-Broadway plays, and 7 indie films.
Divas don't do well in low-budget indies, they don't do well on the stage, and they tend not to go from one hit show to another. The testimonials to him from his co-workers and producers (Cowan & Lipman, Dick Wolf, Fay Ann Lee, Jennifer Elster, Harris Allan, Sharon Gless, etc etc.) have been many and effusive.
I live in NYC and have many friends and deep roots in the New York theatre, and Gale's reputation here is excellent. Immediately upon leaving Vanished (where the whispering campaign had him chronically late and drugged) he went directly into a play with Blythe Danner and Cara Gugino for 8 performances a week, never missing a single performance or delaying a single curtain.
When his firing from "Vanished" resulted in plummeting ratings, a number of people at Fox suddenly had to explain why anybody would start planning on replacing their lead instantly and do so 7 episodes in -- after HIS casting had already made the show the most buzzed about new show on the Internet prior to its premiere (acccording to a study conducted for Media Life magazine). A number of people at Fox suddenly had 'splaining to do.
Their solution was to plant rumors on a couple of websites and feed snarky questions to Michael Ausiello for Josh Berman to half-heartedly deny. I'm sorry to see this campaign of character assassination still going on, so long after "Vanished" has bitten the dust, Josh Berman has gone back to procedurals whence he came, and Mimi Leder has gone God knows where.
Interestingly, post-Vanished, the show's director and creator have fared far worse than the guy who's about to be on "Desperate Housewives" in front of 16 million pairs of eyes a week. Is Josh Berman still planning on tying up the loose ends of "Vanished" on "Bones," or has even that idea gone nowhere?Nowhere has it EVER been
Gee, a tall, good-looking
hold up...
Hal sparks actually said kissing another man was like kissing a dog? he really freaking said that? GEEZ. insecure much Hal?
It's ok to be uncomfortable with it and not like it....but seriously a dog? goodness.
Hal Sparks Kissing A Dog
Liz - Here's a bit more on the context of what Hal said:
"I said something that was construed as being negative when I was trying to be purely descriptive. Somebody asked me what it was like to kiss a guy. Keep in mind that at this point I had not kissed a gay man--I had kissed Gale Harold and another guy. Two straight guys. So if you think I'm referring to kissing gay men as like kissing a dog, then you're wrong on that count, and let's start there.
Secondly, the point I was trying to make was, have you ever seen somebody who has a dog and they love their dog? They have so much emotional connection to that dog and they kiss it right on the face--right on the mouth. And they can conjure up all this emotion about how much they really care about this animal, but they don't want to *beep* it. That's what playing a gay man and kissing other men is like. As much as I can conjure up the emotion of caring and love and support, I don't want to *beep* them."
oh geez....
"somebody asked me what it was like to kiss a guy. keep in mind that at this point, I had not kissed a gay man..." - - i had kissed Gale Harold and another guy"
^ a guy is a friggin guy. what does it have to do with sexuality? it's been a while since i made out with a man, but i don't think there is really a difference in how gay men/straight men kiss. the dude makes no sense.
Disillusioned
Liz - Sorry, I was not trying to defend Hal Sparks. He obviously didn't react too well to the situation he was in. I guess I should have explained further, but the point is simply that the truth is bad enough, we don't need to embellish it and make it even worse. Why twist something that's already twisted? (I do keep forgetting that anything resembling monochromatic agreement is taken as an advocacy of the opposite position - silly me.) Anyway, here are some additional disillusioning comments by actors we at one time thought highly of (two of which have been mentioned above):
ITEM: Prior to the first airing of Showtime's "Queer as Folk", Chris Potter (Dr David) says in a Newsweek interview, "Soon as they say, 'Cut,' you spit. You want to go to a strip bar or touch the makeup girls. You feel dirty. It’s a tough job." He later apologized, stating that his words were taken out of context.
ITEM: Hal Sparks said to TV Guide, on kissing a man: “It couldn’t be weirder. I get a lot of crap for saying this, but it’s a little bit like kissing a dog, because you don’t have any emotional, internal stuff that you [typically] would have when you actually want to be with someone. So as an actor, it’s a unique challenge, because you’ve got to bring it from someplace, make it convincing.” . He also says that Chris Potter "needs to floss."
ITEM: Kerr Smith, mere days after being cited by GLAAD for playing "out and proud" teenager Jack in the WB show "Dawson's Creek", says in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, that he won't do anything more than the once-a-year kiss: "That's as far as I'm going to take it. I don't think teenagers need to see two guys kissing on a weekly basis."
nah...
I didn't think you were defending him. no need to apologize.
I don't know why these people take these roles if they're gonna be *THAT* uncomfortable with it. they take it to a pretty high level. sheesh
Hal say what?

I had heard/read about Hal's 'dog' remark but never in so much detail! How freaky to go into so much effort to explain his dog-analogy, when talking about kissing a man...
I am so relieved they didn't ask Jo and Thore (from VL) this question. I really dreaded watching that 3-part video from GIGA the other week, but luckily the question wasn't asked (though a similar question was asked, but the two guys answered with class).
Also, I can't remember any such interviews with and answers by the QAF UK cast. You?
R.I.P. - Heath Ledger [1979 - 2008]
That's not the point.
At least not from my perspective. I endured the first season of QAF but simply couldn't watch it after that because I could never understand how a) anybody could think a guy as bland (and mean) as Brian could be sexy and b) how anybody could actually want to be friends with such an a**hole. The guy had no redeeming features whatsoever, and Gale Harold lacked (and probably still does) the talent to overcome this shallow characterization.
If Brian was meant to be the guy-you-love-to-hate, a la J.R. Ewing, the creators and Harold failed miserably. There was no reason for any of the others to stay friendly with such a mean-spirited, negative character; at least with a J.R., even though you knew he'd stab you in the back at some point, he had an ingratiating charm and sense of humor.
Check out my blog: http://radicalsexy.blogspot.com/
If you haven't seen Gale
If you haven't seen Gale Harold act since the first season of QAF; you haven't seen him since around 2001! Have you ever even seen him in other roles?
It seems that in the case of Gale Harold, many people are not able to look beyond Brian Kinney and have never considered Harold's other work. This makes me think that maybe there was something special about Harold's portrayal of that character, since it still sets people off years after the show ended!
But in any case, maybe you could forget Brian Kinney and give Gale Harold, the actor, another look.
I saw him in a commercial once...
...and that same ugly, smug expression on his face made me run screaming from the room.
Check out my blog: http://radicalsexy.blogspot.com/
I don't think he has been in
Nope, it was after...
...I know that for certain. But I go running and screaming from the room whenever I see a talentless, uncharismatic actor or actress on the screen. It happens all too often when I encounter Hilary Swank or Jennifer Garner.
Check out my blog: http://radicalsexy.blogspot.com/
All that running and
I did...
...it was obviously a commercial filmed before he started on QAF, but that doesn't mean I didn't see it AFTER I first saw him on QAF. Otherwise, why would have noticed him and gone running and screaming from the room? Oh, yeah, his clear lack of talent or charisma might've had something to do with it.

So I was correct when I
So I was correct when I said you haven't seen him in anything he has done since 2001 or so. Thanks for confirming that.
He did a good job on Grey's Anatomy...
Great points! I have a
I guess the truth hurts about Mr. Harold
It was in most of the entertainment mags about Gale Harold being a prima donna and a diva when he got hired on network TV for one of the fall shows about two years ago. He was ALWAYS late, acted like a Hollywood superstar on the set, and was more diva than Diana Ross, if that's at all possible. I wouldn't exactly call that an admirable trait. Nor would I have respect for anyone that acted like that, despite playing a gay character who most of the audience couldn't stand anyway. I guess playing a fantasy gay character on QAF for five years gives you the right to act like a prima donna on future jobs. NOT! What's he done since QAF? Nothing that earth shattering. Doutbful he'll make much of an impression on DH either.
Course that's my opinion and you have yours...
Really?

He did some theatre since QAF, no? If I wasn't living in Europe I certainly would have tried to go to one of his plays.

well, i will...
I will admit i don't care if he is snapping for service at every second...i find him hot and that's why i watch him.
I also think he is a pretty decent actor. A lot of celebrities are usually very arrogant. I love Frank sinatra's music as do tons of people...but I know a man who hung out with frank and he told me "he treated women like dirt, but damn he made good music and i'll never stop listening to him..."
My point is...I don't think we should hold such a grudge towards an actor because they're arrogant IRL...hell, i bet we would all be a bit more arrogant if we made a lot of money and lived "the life" that these people do.
Multi-faceted
The Gale Harold Prima Donna Story - from the director
Here is an interview with the director of the show Gale Harold was killed off on, supposedly for prima donna actions. This doesn't prove anything either, but the director's comments surely carry more weight than unattributed gossip. To be clear, I'm not stating it as my opinion that this represents the full or partial truth.
It's not every day that a TV show kills off its leading man seven episodes into the first season. But that's exactly what happened on Monday's Vanished, when Gale Harold's Det. Kelton got caught in a hail of gunfire — punishment for learning too much, too soon. Now, for the first time, exec producer Josh Berman explains why he made his star, um, vanish. (Note: Shortly after this interview was conducted, a tip came in that Fox was relocating Vanished to Friday nights. No confirmation yet from the network. I'll keep you posted.)
Ausiello: So, why'd you kill him off?
Josh Berman: The premise of Vanished is that no one is safe. When we were thinking about going into baseball [hiatus] and leaving the viewers wanting more, what better way [to do that] than to have our lead character get too close to the truth? On this show, anything can happen at any time.
Ausiello: The buzz going around is that Gale didn't exactly endear himself to the cast and crew. Is there any truth to that?
Berman: I think a lot of that is gossip. Gale was a consummate professional. I really enjoyed working with him. I don't think that's a fair assessment at all. I have heard that, but I didn't experience that.
Ausiello: How did he react to the news?
Berman: Really well. We had always talked about something like this happening to his character; we just didn't know when it would happen. But when we were writing the episodes, we realized that his character was getting close to the truth quicker than we had originally anticipated. So [fellow exec producer] Mimi Leder and I had a big discussion with him about how he would feel about doing this in Episode 7, leading into baseball. And he was really gung-ho about it. In fact, in the episode where he's shot, there's a scene where his [estranged] wife gives him his wedding ring back; that was his idea. He thought that if he was going to die, it would be nice to have closure with Ava. I thought that was a great, human instinct to have as an actor. He was on board. He loves the show, and he loves his character. Like his character, Gale had a lot of questions, and I think that it was very satisfying for him to get some answers before he left.
Ausiello: So, just to be clear, this was solely a story-line-dictated decision, and had nothing to do with Gale or his performance?
Berman: No. Fox told us to think outside the box from the beginning. We're not constrained by, "Oh, we have a [contract] with him for this season." We want this to be an edge-of-your-seat kind of show. And I think now, with killing off our main character, no one can guess what's going to happen next.
When in doubt, just make stuff up?
It was in NO entertainment mags about Gale Harold being a prima donna. Name one. The closest to anything like that was Michael Ausiello of TV Guide Online asking Josh Berman if it was true that Gale was difficult, and Berman saying something like "I heard rumors about that but never personally saw it." There were no such rumors, and Ausiello -- a notorious network shill -- was simply fed the question by Fox so that Berman could deny it unconvincingly. Fox had a lot of covering its tail to do after firing its lead actor and sending 5 million viewers running to other shows. I don't know where you get your "information" but ultimately it's from the same dubious network source, and certainly not from any magazine. If you want to believe it, fine, but don't simply LIE to us and claim you read it in Entertainment Weekly or someplace. Lying isn't an admirable trait either.
Not jumping on the bandwagon either...
Gale is a nice looking man, but I certainly would not consider him the creme of the crop either. Hubby and I stopped watcing the show early on in the series, about maybe end of second season. I thought Justin was annoying. I'd rather see the guys from the British verson instead.
As far as what he will accomplish on DH.. time will only tell, but I wouldn't go out of my way to stay glued to the tv to watch his scenes.
Where there is smoke there is fire.
Clearly the show went nowhere as it never returned to air. This was not the first time Mr. Harrold registered on the annoying meter. Gossip rumored he was irksome when he guest starred on LAW & ORDER and Peter Paige will not speak of him; as in, "if you can't say anything nice don't say anything." He played a reprobate skinhead on GREY'S ANATOMY, was that typecasting? And who knows what evil lurks on Wysteria Lane. Marc Cherry knows.
Put it in bold, put it in italics, it still ain't true
Peter Paige won't speak to him? That must be difficult, since Peter Paige attended his play in NYC and was photographed with him. According to both Scott Lowell and Sharon Gless, they all still play poker together in L.A. This supposed "gossip that he was irksome when he guest starred on LAW & ORDER" I never saw before. What I did see, was this, from an Associated Press article at the time:
LOS ANGELES -- To play a compelling and dangerous doctor on Friday's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, executive producer Neal Baer chose "one of the most charismatic actors on television."
Charismatic, and relatively unknown. But Gale Harold is an actor on the brink of a major career, according to his admirers, Baer among them.
"We think he pops," the producer said. "You want to know who he is and what he's about."
Jennifer Elster, who cast Harold opposite her in Particles of Truth, her film debuting Thursday at New York's Tribeca Film Festival, said she auditioned hundreds of actors for the part of a troubled writer.
"There are people who are lead role material and then there are people who aren't, who can't carry a film. I felt Gale could carry this film," said Elster. "I absolutely, 100 percent, feel that Gale is a major star."
Harold's most visible role so far has been that of a high-living ad executive on Showtime's Queer as Folk, a bawdy series about a group of gay and lesbian friends that's now in its third season.
His appearance as a cloning-fixated physician on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (10 p.m. EDT Friday, NBC) is Harold's first on a network series. Rhinoceros Eyes, a film in which he plays a singing and dancing detective, is poised for festival submission.
If Harold, 32, is at a pivotal moment in his career, he seems to be taking it in stride -- and one project at a time. The actor is eager to talk about work, not his potential as The Next Big Thing.
What?!
Clearly the show went nowhere as it never returned to air. This was not the first time Mr. Harrold registered on the annoying meter. Gossip rumored he was irksome when he guest starred on LAW & ORDER and Peter Paige will not speak of him; as in, "if you can't say anything nice don't say anything." I think he looks good
I can't say anything about his acting skills, cause like most straight women I only watched the sex scenes between him and that cutey Justin. They were so cute together, such chemistry. They turned me into a faghag(is that PC?).The charachter Brian was an asshole and an idiot, I hated what the writers did to that show.
but I am still curious to his role in DH
wow, i notice.....
I notice whether we are talking about Gale the actor or even his character Brian...it sure stirs up conversation. interesting :-)
Liz, I'd call it evangelism more than conversation :-)
So if you or anyone thinks that Gail is remotely cute, possibly talented, maybe no better or worse to the crew than your average TV actor, you are wrong and you will fry in hell!
I'll be there frying next to you, but laughing my junk off at the level of hysteria that this guy creates. And the sexy men poll is coming soon. I am scared as the site may need moderators ;-)

fry in hell?
Oh, i am already gonna be fryin' in hell for so many reasons. (or so thats what people love to tell me...pft)
The arguement for people who don't like him seems to be because of his arrogance, which i find hilarious. I bet he is arrogant. it's showbusiness. heck, it's business in general. EH.
Do people really know he is arrogant...
heck, that is a.....
That's a very good question. I think the brian haters think Gale is like Brian.....but the thing is....none of us know. we don't know Gale personally, so i am amused how some people here say "he's a diva" like it's a FACT.
While I don't know anything about Gale's attitudes
I always had the impression that straight women prefered him on QaF and gay men Randy Harrison. I have to admit that Brian didn't do much for me either. The sex scenes were hot, and I liked the character Brian Kinney a lot, but it didn't make me want to hook up with Gale. I wouldn't say no to Randy Harrison though.
But I honestly admire that Gale Harold as a straight man didn't have any problem with playing gay and doing very graphical scenes. He also never felt the urge to tell in every interview that he is straight. And I don't recall an interview with him in which he told how uncomfortable it makes him to kiss another man. Instead, he showed up with Randy as if they were big buddies in real life, and the two of them still see the plays the other one is doing.
Theories
I agree with yo
