Gay in the UK video blog (Ep. 18): "EastEnders,"' London Pride, and scandal!

It's a sunny day and Tim and Ryan head out to the garden deliver the latest in U.K. news. The boys share their plans for London Pride, and offer share the latest word on that MP expenses scandal, including the results of a surprising national poll which asked the public what celebrity they would want to replace the outgoing disgraced Speaker of the House of Commons. Turns out the winner is gay icon!

Turning to culture, the boys discuss possible public reaction to the gay Muslim character on the British soap opera EastEnders.

Finally, in the Wino awards segment both Morrissey and Eminem get shout outs.

Check it all out after the break!

Will you

be mentioning the late great Danny La Rue in your next blog, He was a main stay of British family tv for decades and will be greatly missed.

amusing...

i think i replayed your pronounciation of 'eminem' for about...maybe 20 times. funny stuff there. :-P

i saw a cat walking around behind you guys and actually cringed (i sort of have a fear of cats) what's her/his name?

Eminem shout out?

Why are you praising Eminem when he was so homophobic on the latest MTV Movie Awards towards Sasha Baron Cohen in character as Bruno the Gay Austrian? And members of D12 even hit "Bruno." (It was like a live gay bashing!) Or do you think the Eminem walkout was staged?

About the Syed and Christian storyline on Eastenders, I am so excited! (I loved the scene when Syed met Christian: "I'm Syed." "Christian." "Muslim." lol) But when will Syed start to question his sexuality? Right now, Syed is still in love with Amira! Will this change in June, July, August or even later? Will there be many interactions/conversations between Syed and Christian soon? Spoilers, dates please!

I am very saddened to hear that the UK Labour Party doesn't support marriage equality! The Green Party in countries like Canada are Green Libertarians and would like to cut certain public services while cutting income taxes and introducing a carbon tax. Is this true of the UK Green Party? If so, how would people who support social justice (through a stable tax base) and marriage equality vote in the UK?

On a lighter note, Stephen Fry is a funny, talented, entertaining star! I wish there were more people like him to entertain us!

And thank you Ryan and Tim for another wonderful vlog!

Peace.

Support marriage equality, they are the ones that "pushed" through the civil unions act and while its not strictly marriage, in the legal sense it afford us the same rights (a few issues like insurance are still being ironed out and loopholes to be closed), plus it is a platform from which we will no doubt get marriage on the same footing as heteros.

Infact all major partys support gay unions (not sure on the word marriage per se)

OneWorld's picture

I am talking about CIVIL MARRIAGE!

Don't you have civil marriage for opposite-sex couples in the UK now? Like when a straight atheist couple gets married, they can get a civil marriage certificate without the blessing of ANY church but it is still called marriage for them!

This is what should exist for same-sex couples! Same-sex couples should have equal rights to access civil marriage and NOT just civil unions!

Like in Canada, we have marriage equality! And when the Liberal Party of Canada brought in the legislation to introduce marriage equality in Canada in 2005, they made any cabinet minister that didn't support it to RESIGN from cabinet! So everyone that remained in cabinet supported equality! It was so cool for me to see that! Also, the United Church of Canada, the largest Protestant denomination in Canada, supports marriage equality so gay Christians can religiously get married in Canada too!

But at the very least, there has to be civil marriage equality in the UK! Don't you want same-sex marriages to be treated with the same dignity and respect as opposite-sex marriages? It isn't fair otherwise!

I didnt say I didnt

did I?

No, of course I want it but what we have is a very important stepping stone, sometimes things take longer than you want but you have to compromise and you get there in the end.

Infact although I would like marriage it seems a portion of the GLBT community doesnt seem to mind what we have, everyone calls it "gay marriage" anyway so I think people have become a bit complacent with it.

But like I said its progress however you look at it.

Be patient BUT keep on fighting the good fight!

Well, I'm glad you support marriage equality! And I agree with you that civil unions are a great progressive step in the right direction!

But equality has NOT been achieved yet! So this is my humble advise to you: don't give up or settle for anything less than equality! Keep on fighting for equality!

As Martin Luther King Jr said, "Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed."

Peace.

London Pride & Trans Community

I see the Pride organisers have managed to piss off the Trans community. Again:

Hurray for comments!

Nice to see you all so active this week.

I don't know the cat's name, it's my neighbour's and annoys me because I'm allergic to cats and it poos on my flowerbed.

Yes, I'd heard about the trans boycott of pride. It seems a shame to me that these issues can't be resolved so we can all celebrate diversity.

It is sad about Danny La Rue, I'm sure we'll mention him.

Eminem wasn't exactly praised (if you look at what we awarded him, and what for - we are a cheeky pair!)

I'm glad i opened a can of worms with the marriage/civil union debate. My point was about our Members of the European Parliament (election this Thursday), wanting unification of gay rights throughout Europe, not especially rights within Europe, as it has to be said the Labour Party have done quite well for us. The issue of it being a 'union' or 'partnership' rather than 'marriage' seems to be focussed, at least in this country, as a matter of faith, rather than legality (we have more or less the same rights, but marriage is seen as a religious term) although you can still be blessed by your church, so 'married' in the eyes of your God, if not according to the dictionary.

Do I care? a bit, but I think I'll focus on getting a boyfriend first!

Cheers guys x

What an active lot

You guys are very talkative this week - great to come to the page and see the discussions. Danny will definitely be mentioned, the civil union/partnerhsip/marriage thing - well at least we've got a law allowing us to be united and recognised in the UK. The value of marriage? Probably just a tax and inheritence advantage really.

The Greens - interesting party but lacks strong leadership and creates little noise. Unfortunately its policies of environment and liberty have been taken on by the big political beasts in the last few years. It's hard to say what the Greens want because there aren't enough of them to have a national manifesto.

Oh and Eminememememem...well, definietly wasn't praising the man - but although he has shown himself to be homophobic I absolutely love his work!

Over and out

You say poll unusually :p

You say poll unusually :p and I'm from Brighton. Speaking of which and changing Pride routes, the Brighton Pride route goes really close to 'dyke road', haha I wish it went down the road. Its just a waste of wordplay..

re.Margate. It wasn't the idea which sucked it was the fact that their leaflet was 2/3 blank, bad time management. Alan Sugar actually said they were too subtle
