GLAAD launches new slew of PSAs GLAAD will be launching a series of new public service announcements starting today. They are a part of an ongoing campaign called “Be an Ally and a Friend” and feature a number of gay or gay-friendly celebrities asking straight people to be “allies” of the gay community. The list of talent recruited for this campaign is pretty impressive. It includes the likes of Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters), Michael Urie (Ugly Betty), T.R. Knight, Sara Ramirez and Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy). What, no Isaiah Washington? Didn’t he tape a PSA for GLAAD awhile back? I guess his segment didn't quite make the cut. No matter. You can view the first of the new crop of PSA’s on GLAAD’s website. That one includes Jerry O’Connell, T.R. Knight, Marlee Matlin, and John Amaechi. Coming in the next few weeks is PSA from the cast of Ugly Betty. Of note: One of the first “Be An Ally and a Friend” PSAs (from back in 2006) featured As The World Turns actors Van Hansis (Luke Snyder) and Martha Byrne (Lily). You can watch their PSA here.

I saw this...
...last night on TV- the one with TR. I actually clapped my hands with glee! It 's about friggin time. It seems the American public needs to be reminded to do the right thing, so after years of "down with animal cruelty, your brain on drugs...etc, etc, we finally have one that that really does affect each and every one of us. Now if we can get everyone to take it to heart...
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.
Michael Urie
I saw him on the Jerry Lewis telethon and it's impossible for me to believe he's not gay. I know he changed his profile after he hit it big, and now we're supposed to think he's straight, but I really have never seen a gay man. Or bi, although I guess he probably wouldn't say he's bi since he's semi-famous now. At least he isn't homophobic.
I'm not sure how much good PSAs do, but I admire everyone who participates in these for GLAAD.
Michael Urie
You might want to check out Michael Urie's entry at Wikipedia. He's been tap-dancing around this in various interviews. He told USA Today that he won't discuss his sexual orientation or his love life. He says, ''I'm still young. I'm still figuring it out. I love mystery.'' He also did an interview with a Web site where he said he wasn't out.
Sad. I've never seen a straight celebrity decline to even indicate a sexual orientation. Whenever an actor doesn't discuss his ''personal life,'' a red flag always goes up for me. Ironically, the character that Urie plays on ''Ugly Betty'' recently came out to his mother. It's a shame that kind of bravery doesn't extend to his real life.
