Grading Adam Lambert's fashion highlights and missteps

He may be a supremely talented singer and a consummate stage performer, but Adam Lambert has proven he's not infallible when it comes to fashion. Case in point: last night's acid washed jeans. Come on now Adam, seriously?

After the break, we take a look back at Adam's American Idol journey and grade his many ensembles. Which were your favorites?

Top 13 performance ("Black or White")

Adam started off strong both musically and fashion-wise. For Michael Jackson week he eschewed a single white glove (thank goodness) and sported a flattering turquoise leather jacket together with what appears to be a bicycle chain double-wrapped around his neck. GRADE: B+

Top 11 ("Ring of Fire")

Screw Randy Travis, we love the black nail polish. The silver leather jacket was okay too. We were a little less sanguine about the Patti Lupone pixie 'do. GRADE: C+

Top 10 ("Tracks of My Tears")

Love love love him with the hair slicked back in a an Elvis Presley pompadour. That silver suit was a little sheeny, but all in all an excellent effort. GRADE: A

Top 9 ("Play That Funky Music, White Boy")

Adam held over the slicked back hair from the week before and paired it with a perfect-fitting jacket, hip-hugging bell bottoms, and a perriwinkle blue sweater. Funky White Boy looked damn fine! GRADE: A+

Top 8 ("Mad World" - first performance)

We weren't mad about the white pants or the Pashmina sweater, but they did work well with that ultra-mod blue lighting.  GRADE B-

Top 7 ("Born to be Wild")

"Born to be Wild"? Not in those sneakers and peg leg jeans you're not. Go back to the sexy bell bottoms, please. GRADE: C-

Top 7 ("If I Can't Have You")

We're digging the slicked back hair and a black suit is always stylish, but what the hell is up with those shoulder pads? They look like a pair of ski jumps. GRADE: B-

Top 5 ("Feeling Good")

Adam's got the shoulder pads tamed, but for an evening of rat pack inspired standards we would've preferred a black suit. GRADE: B

Top 4 ("Whole Lotta Love")

And we've got a whole lotta love for this ensemble. Here Adam is back to bell bottoms, a very flattering cut for him. Also his hair is edgy without being too primped. GRADE: A

Top 3 ("One")

Oh dear, what is Adam going for with this look? A Wrangler Jeans sponsorship? GRADE: C-

Final 2 ("Mad World" - encore performance)

This outfit was flattering, but Simon was right when he pegged it as "overtheatrical." Neo from The Matrix is calling. He wants his coat back. GRADE: B-

Final 2 ("Change is Gonna Come")

Wow, loving him in the light gray suit and turquoise tie. It was the perfect serious outfit for a serious song. GRADE: A

Final 2 ("No Boundaries")

We get it. You don't want to have to release that godawful Kara DioGuardi song as your first single so you're intentionally trying to lose. How else to explain those acid wash jeans? GRADE: D

Disagree with any of the grades we dished out here? Which outfits were your most and least favorite? Let us know in the comments!

I probably shouldn't judge

I probably shouldn't judge anyone's clothes, considering 99% of everything I own are T-shirts from a resale shop and jeans or shorts. But the only two Adam things I've hated were his "funky music" outfit and his acid wash jeans last night. The purple shirt was ugly and those jeans look like they were left under a statue overnight and crapped on by pigeons.

I disagree with a lot of

I disagree with a lot of the grades. I loved Ring of Fire, and Mad World V. 2.0. Most of his suits were boring

Oh, please. Ring of Fire

Oh, please. Ring of Fire outfit was awesome.

But his best was the Dark Goth Angel look from tonight.  I especially loved the rhinestone handcuffs.
