Last Night's "Ugly Betty": "No one can know. Not even Hilda!"

*** Warning, post contains spoilers from last night's episode of Ugly Betty ***
Knowing that last night's installment was the third to last Ugly Betty episode ever made it kind of painful to watch. It would be one thing if the show was fading out creatively, like so many series do towards the end of their runs, but Betty really seems to be firing on every cylinder these days, and I'm just hating that we're losing it forever.
Last night had a lot of story threads: The major involved Betty in London reconnecting with Gio, Wilhelmina plotting to turn illegitimate son Tyler against Claire and Daniel, and perhaps the most interesting, Bobby feeling really hurt and confused when Justin refuses to hang out with him.
Bobby doesn't understand why all of a sudden Justin doesn't want to be his friend any more and tries everything – including tickets to a Beyoncé concert – to get back in his future stepson's good graces. Bobby finally sees Justin and Austin kissing in the vestibule (I want a house with a vestibule!), and it all comes clear.
That's right, the cat is finally out of the bag. Well, partly out of the bag – since Justin makes Bobby promise not to tell anyone – including Hilda.
I thought the show did a great job of showing how closeted
gay teens quite often disengage with their families in order not to be
discovered. The emotional separation seems tragic, but completely
understandable – even within a family as completely supportive as casa Suarez.
The show has a lot to get through in its final two episodes, and not just with Justin! But I have a lot of faith that the Ugly Betty writers and cast will bring everything to a satisfying conclusion.
We are so going to miss you guys.
